The smell of crushed mint, ozone, and hot copper was the first thing to reach Valen’s senses as his consciousness drifted back into the room.

He opened his eyes slowly.

The high, ribbed stone ceiling of Layer Two’s private vault rose above him, bathed in the soft, rhythmic indigo pulse of the nearby Ichor-Heart conduits.Full novel: Isekai Overseer: Reign of the Behemoth — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He lay stripped to his waist on an organic, bone-lined divan, thick bands of luminescent bio-thread stitched in tight zig-zags across the deep laceration on his left ribs.

Beside him sat Lyra.

Her head rested against the side of his divan, her silver-grey hair spilling over his arm.

Her fingers were curled tightly around his left hand, refusing to let go even in her light, exhausted sleep.

The delicate silver filigree of the Nerve-Scribe Crown etched into her temple glowed with a faint, faint violet hue, echoing the steady rhythm of his own pulse.

On his right side, Karen slumped in a heavy wooden chair, her brass-framed goggles pushed up onto her forehead, her cheeks smudged with soot and oil.

A half-disassembled brass diagnostic meter sat in her lap.

Valen stirred, shifting his weight.

A sharp, burning ache radiated across his ribcage, causing a faint breath to catch in his throat.

Instantly, Lyra’s eyes snapped open.

Her glowing sapphire irises locked onto his face, her breath hitching as a sudden, overwhelming wave of relief washed through their shared neural link.

“Valen!” she gasped, her voice trembling as she sat up, her small hands immediately coming up to cup his face.

“You’re awake…

Gods, you’ve been unconscious for three days!”

“Three days?” Valen rasped, his throat dry as ash.

Karen jarred awake at the sound of his voice, nearly dropping her diagnostic meter onto the flagstones.

“My Lord!

Don’t you dare try to sit up!

Your ribs were smashed, your liver was half-ruptured, and three of your main neural pathways were literally cooked from that tower overcharge!”

“I’m fine, Karen,” Valen said quietly, though his voice lacked its usual bite.

He looked back at Lyra, reaching up with his hand to brush a stray lock of hair from her cheek.

Through the Synaptic Weave forged between them, he didn’t just see her concern—he felt the sheer, terrifying depth of her devotion.

The memory of his near-fatal collapse had terrified her far more than House Vane’s entire army ever had.

“You burned yourself out to save us,” Lyra whispered, leaning into his palm, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

“Through the Crown…

I felt your body tearing apart while you fought Vane.

Don’t ever do that again, Valen.

Please.”

“A sovereign doesn’t hide behind his walls while his people bleed,” Valen murmured, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek.

A floating grid of brilliant violet light bloomed across Valen’s vision, displaying the full diagnostic breakdown of his ascension.

“Lyra,” Valen said, his eyes sharpening as he sat up smoothly, ignoring Karen’s dramatic groan of protest.

“Report on the pass.

What is the status of Vane’s army?”

Lyra took a deep breath, composing herself as her posture shifted seamlessly from devoted consort to chief tactical officer.

“The battle ended the moment Lord Vane fell.

Eighteen hundred and forty men-at-arms threw down their steel.

Vaelen Vane and Marcus have been working around the clock.

Every single prisoner has been stripped of their heavy plate and fitted with the Penal Restraint Matrix.”

“And Vaelen?”

“Frighteningly efficient, My Lord,” Karen chimed in, leaning against the edge of the operating table.

“The former commander organized his old men into three disciplined labor brigades.

They’re already clearing the shale from the pass and digging out the foundations for the new Marrow-Forge Refinery in Layer Three.

With eighteen hundred fresh hands, we’re building faster in a day than we used to in a month.”

Valen swung his legs over the edge of the divan, standing up.

He flexed his left arm, feeling the interlocking plates of his calcified skin adjust seamlessly under his ribs.

The wound had closed, leaving a faint, silver scar across his torso.

“Good,” Valen said.

He raised his hand, accessing the System interface.

“System: Spend 5,500 EXP.

Authorize immediate construction of the Marrow-Forge Refinery and four Bone-Spire Sentinels along the outer ridge.”

Deep beneath their feet, the entire Titan shuddered with a low, resonant rumble.

High above on the canyon ridges, four massive pillars of white bone erupted through the rock face, their tips twisting together into hollow, artillery-like snouts aimed directly down the pass.

Valen pulled a clean black tunic over his shoulders and walked out toward the main balcony overlooking Layer Two.

Lyra walked directly beside him, her hand lightly resting against his lower back, while Karen followed close behind with her tool belt slung over her shoulder.

The view below was breathtaking. This chapter is updated first at novelpin‌g.com.

The dark, stagnant bone-cave was gone.

In its place stood a sprawling, bio-mechanical war-city.

Hundreds of penal workers in grey tunics marched in neat columns, guided by the glowing violet collars around their necks.

Massive marrow-conduits pulsed with glowing blue ichor, weaving through the stone like glowing veins.

At the center of the courtyard, the crippled Siege Leviathan was already being retrofitted with heavy Titan-steel plating under Marcus’s supervision.

Vaelen Vane stepped onto the balcony, dropping to one knee instantly before Valen.

“Lord Overseer,” Vaelen said, his voice flat, precise, and entirely devoid of hesitation.

“The Iron-Penal Legion is fully operational.

The outer mine shaft has been cleared, and the primary fuel vaults under House Vane’s old seat at the Iron-Reach are undefended.

The garrison there consists of fewer than fifty men.”

“Marcus,” Valen called out toward the courtyard below.

The heavy vanguard officer looked up, his calcified shield-arm glinting in the light, and gave a sharp nod.

“Take fifty Bone-Shatter Vanguard and two hundred penal operatives,” Valen commanded, his voice echoing across the entire cavernous hall.

“Secure the Iron-Reach seat.

Annex their foundries, seize their gold, and bring their remaining smiths back here in chains.”

“It will be done, My Lord!” Marcus bellowed, turning to rally his squad.

Valen walked to the edge of the stone parapet, looking out past the bone-arch gate toward the jagged mountain peaks beyond.

Beside him, Lyra suddenly stiffened.

The silver filigree of the Nerve-Scribe Crown on her temple flashed with a sharp, crimson spark.

She closed her eyes, her hand tightening over the stone rail as her spatial grid flared to life.

“Valen,” Lyra murmured, her voice laced with sudden tension.

“The long-range sensors…

something just crossed the three-hundred-mile threshold from the Eastern Province.”

Valen turned his head slightly.

“A House Vane remnant?”

“No,” Lyra said, opening her glowing sapphire eyes, looking at him with a mix of awe and foreboding.

“It’s an Imperial war-frigate bearing the black-and-gold flag of the Grand Duchy of Drake.

Your father’s personal envoys have noticed the fall of House Vane.

They’re coming to investigate.”

A dark, cold smile touched Valen’s lips as he looked out over his newly forged bio-mechanical empire.

“Let them come,” Valen said softly, his purple System eyes flaring in the twilight air.

“They exiled a disgraced prince.

They are about to meet a Sovereign.”
