The city of Oakhaven did not smell of iron and marrow like The Bone-Grave.

It smelled of wet pine, canal silt, rot, and cheap perfume.

Nestled in the lush basin fifteen miles south of the Bone-Pass, Oakhaven was a walled trade city of fifty thousand souls.Full novel: Isekai Overseer: Reign of the Behemoth — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Built around a sprawling network of river canals, it was governed by the Council of Seven—a coalition of old-money merchant lords who had bled the surrounding peasantry dry through extortionate tariffs, monopolies, and private mercenary enforcement.

Valen stood on the covered balcony of a lavish riverfront estate in Oakhaven’s Merchant District.

He wore a heavy, dark-velvet traveling coat over a concealed tunic of flexible Titan-steel chainmail.

Beside him stood Lyra, her silver-grey hair hidden under a sleek silk hood, her sapphire eyes scanning the bustling canal streets below.

Behind them in the candlelit study, Lady Saphira Vex—head of the Golden Scales Syndicate—poured three glasses of spiced wine.

“You’re walking into a serpent’s nest, Sovereign,” Saphira said, stepping out onto the balcony and handing Valen a crystal glass.

“Duke Malakor, the Chief Councilman of Oakhaven, doesn’t care that you defeated House Vane.

He sees your cheap Titan-steel imports as a direct threat to his family’s iron foundry monopoly.”

“Malakor’s foundries produce brittle iron at twice the price of my Titan-steel,” Valen replied, taking a sip of the wine.

“His own smiths are buying our ingots through black-market proxies.”

“Which is precisely why he’s desperate,” Saphira said, leaning against the stone balustrade.

“Malakor has secretly hired the Ebon-Fang Mercenary Guild—three hundred elite blades—to stage a blockade along the southern trade road tomorrow.

He intends to seize your incoming grain caravans, frame local bandits, and force you into a ruinous trade agreement.”

Lyra reached out, her delicate fingers lightly touching Valen’s forearm.

Through the Synaptic Weave linking their minds, her spatial awareness mapped the entire district in real time, filtering out the noise of the city.

‘Valen,’ Lyra’s voice echoed in his mind, clear and calm.

‘I’ve tapped into the mana-lines running through the canal network.

Malakor’s private residence is guarded by twelve battle-mages and forty city guards.

But his second-in-command, Councilman Vane—unrelated to Lord Hector—is heavily indebted to Saphira’s syndicate.

He can be turned.’

Valen turned his gaze to Saphira.

“How many members of the Council of Seven are truly loyal to Malakor?”

“Only two,” Saphira answered, a cold, ambitious smile touching her lips.

“Three are terrified of him, and two—including myself—are waiting for someone strong enough to break his grip on the city’s charter.”

“Then we don’t march an army through these gates,” Valen said, his purple System eyes flaring in the evening shadow.

“An invasion causes panic, destroys infrastructure, and brings the Grand Duchy’s inspectors running back.

We take Oakhaven from the inside out.”

Later that night, deep beneath the city in a converted cellar beneath Saphira’s warehouse, Valen convened his covert strike team.

Marcus stood silently in the corner, wearing unadorned black leather armor over his massive frame.

Beside him, Vaelen Vane sat at an iron table, laying out detailed maps of Oakhaven’s sewer networks, mercenary barracks, and council guard posts.

“The Ebon-Fang mercenaries have established their primary staging camp two miles outside the southern gate,” Vaelen reported, his voice flat, precise, and entirely controlled by his Penal Restraint Matrix.

“They expect a standard merchant caravan guarded by lightly armed freemen. This chapter is updated first at g.com.

They do not know that Unit Three of the Bone-Shatter Vanguard is hidden inside the lead grain wagons.”

“Good,” Valen said, leaning over the map.

“Marcus, when the mercenaries strike the caravan tomorrow morning, do not merely defend the wagons.

Annihilate their leadership, capture their second-in-command, and fit him with a restraint collar.”

Marcus gave a sharp, brutal grin, slamming his fist against his chest.

“Consider it done, My Lord.”

“And the city guard?” Lyra asked, stepping beside Valen.

“Vaelen and I will handle the city guard,” Valen replied.

“We are going to give Councilman Malakor twenty-four hours to realize his mercenaries have vanished.

When he panics and calls an emergency meeting of the Council of Seven…

I will be waiting for him in the chamber.”

Lyra looked at Valen, her hand lacing through his under the table, her mind sending him a wave of fierce, unshakeable confidence.

“The city is already yours, My Lord,” she whispered softly.

“They just haven’t read the contract yet.”

Valen looked out the cellar window toward the towering spires of Duke Malakor’s estate rising over the river, a dark, sovereign smile spreading across his face.
