The air at the breach in Layer Four didn’t smell like earth or stone.

It smelled like ancient bile, warm iron, and the sickly sweet tang of rotting bio-matter that had been sealed under extreme pressure for millennia.

Every breath tasted thick and metallic on the back of Valen’s tongue, leaving a greasy film that stung the nostrils.Full novel: Isekai Overseer: Reign of the Behemoth — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Valen stood at the very edge of the pit, his fingers gripping the cold brass housing of his lantern so tightly his knuckles turned pale.

The illumination from the marrow-crystal inside cast long, unnatural shadows against the rib-carved walls, casting erratic flickers across the dark abyss below.

Beneath his boots, the calcified stone floor vibrated—not with the sharp, violent tremors of an earthquake, but with a slow, agonizingly rhythmic twitch.

It was a deep, wet shudder that echoed up through the bedrock every few seconds, carrying the horrifying cadence of a massive, struggling pulse.

“Karen, how are the winches holding?” Valen asked, his voice low, measured, and stripped of all hesitation.

Karen wiped a thick streak of black grease from her forehead with the back of her gloved hand, her heavy leather apron stained dark with pneumatic fluid and crushed marrow-pulp.

She kicked the iron housing of the heavy winch system, listening intently to the agonizing groan of the gearwork as four massive cables strained against the mouth of the pit.

“The steel cables are humming like lute strings, Valen,” Karen called back, her brass-framed goggles catching the indigo glow of the nearby conduits.

“The heat venting out of that shaft is already fifty degrees hotter than the lower refinery floor.

It’s melting the seal-grease straight out of the pulleys.

If you stay down there longer than two hours, the friction is going to shear those line-braids clean through, and the cables will snap.”

Lyra stepped up beside him, her footfalls silent against the cartilage floor.

The delicate, silver-and-sapphire filigree of the Nerve-Scribe Crown running along her temples was pulsing in erratic, sharp bursts, casting a erratic, violent blue glare across her pale face.

Suddenly, she gasped—a sharp, ragged sound—and staggered back a full step.

Her hands flew to her head, her fingers digging desperately into her hairline as her knees buckled.

“Lyra!” Valen reacted instantly, dropping his center of gravity and catching her firmly by the waist before she could strike the stone.

Her skin felt scorching hot through her tunic, vibrating with a subtle, erratic tremor.

“What do you see?

Talk to me.”

it’s not dead, Valen,” she whispered, her voice trembling with an uncharacteristic, raw terror that sent a chill straight down Valen’s spine.

Her sapphire eyes locked onto his, wide and unblinking, filled with the reflection of things far beyond physical sight.

“We thought The Bone-Grave was built on a fossilized skeleton.

We thought the Titan was just an ancient shell of petrified marrow…

But Layer Five…

the bone stops, Valen.

The stone ends.”

She clutched his coat lapels, her breath ragged.

“There’s flesh down there.

Warm, contracting, living muscle.

Miles of it.

And something…

something vast and ancient is watching us from inside the dark.”

Beside them, Marcus grunted, his armored bulk casting a shadow over both of them.

He slammed a heavy, calcified marrow-cartridge into the side port of his eight-foot steam-shield with a loud, metallic CLACK, locking the internal pressure valves into place.

“Watched or not, the Sovereign needs Tier 4 before Duke Aldous’s scouts cross the border,” Marcus rumbled, his deep voice vibrating in his chest plate as he pulled down his visor.

“We didn’t come this far to turn back because the mountain has a pulse.

I’m going first.”

The descent began.

The four steel cables hissed as the heavy iron winches unwound, lowering the platform into the dark.

One hundred feet down, the orange lantern light from the Layer Four refinery faded to a distant, pinprick glow.

Two hundred feet down, the air turned so thick and humid that condensation—sticky, faintly purple, and foul-smelling—began to coat their armor plates in slick droplets.

Four hundred feet down, the light of the upper world vanished completely.

When their boots finally touched the floor of Layer Five, there was no loud crunch of gravel or ring of boot-iron on stone.

The ground yielded beneath their weight like thick, wet canvas, sinking an inch with every step.

Valen dropped to one knee, lowering his lantern to examine the surface.

It was a dense, carpeted mesh of calcified vascular tissue, crisscrossed with tiny, hair-like capillaries that twitched and squirmed under the pressure of their leather soles.

The squad barely had time to unhook their harnesses from the steel rig when the environment itself turned hostile.

Without warning, the bio-pressure slammed into them like a physical hammer dropped from the ceiling.

It felt as though the atmospheric weight had quadrupled in a fraction of a second, squeezing their chests and pressing heavily against their eardrums.

THUD-THUD.

Two Vanguard soldiers at the rear instantly dropped to their knees, letting out choked, gurgling cries.

Blood gushed violently from their nostrils and from beneath their helmet visors as their bio-armor seals groaned and distorted under the suffocating force.

“Valen…” Lyra choked out, her legs giving out completely as she collapsed against his chest.

Her skin felt like iron fresh out of the forge, and faint, violet veins were beginning to trace themselves along the edges of her neck.

“It’s talking…

it’s whispering in a language before speech…

inside my skull…”

Valen pulled her tight against his side, his teeth gritted as he triggered his own purple bio-energy, forcing a torrent of raw, System-infused aura upward into her crown to create a localized psychic buffer.

But even with his resistance, his own vision began to flicker violently, dark purple static creeping in from the margins of his eyes.

He looked down the wide, pitch-black subterranean corridor stretching into the gloom ahead.

The giant muscle walls lining the passage didn’t just pulse with that wet, agonizing rhythm—they parted.

Great, glistening folds of crimson tissue peeled back like massive, toothless mouths, exhalations of thick, luminous purple fog cascading out into the central trench.

And suspended in the swirling, humid fog fifty yards ahead was a flickering, terrifying silhouette.

It was a colossal, multi-eyed entity embedded directly into the root structure of the entire mountain range.

Dozens of glowing, milky-white ocular spheres, each the size of a siege tower, turned in unison within the fleshy mass, staring down at the tiny intruders with cold, incomprehensible malice.

Its vast, sprawling form extended miles in every direction—stretching far deeper, far wider, and far older than the fortress built upon its crown.

The truth hit Valen with the weight of a falling mountain.

It wasn’t just a Behemoth’s fossilized resting place.

The Bone-Grave was perched directly atop the severed, barely dormant, and surviving heart of a world-eating titan.
