The surgical theater in Layer Two smelled of hot marrow, cauterized skin, and lye.

Five veteran miners sat strapped to stone slabs, their jaws clenched against leather straps.

Valen stood over the first man, his right arm pulsing with radiant blue light drawn directly from the Ichor-Heart below.Full novel: Isekai Overseer: Reign of the Behemoth — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Beside him, Karen held a tray of calcified bone-plates freshly harvested from the dead Leukocyte Sentinels.

“Hold still,” Valen said calmly to the chief miner, a broad-shouldered man named Torin.

Valen pressed his glowing palm onto Torin’s right shoulder.

The System’s biological resonance flared.

White bone-plates liquified and fused into Torin’s skeletal structure, wrapping his right arm in an unbreakable, calcified exoskeleton that extended into a jagged, three-foot bone-blade along his forearm.

Torin gasped as the tissue knit shut in seconds, leaving behind zero scarring.

One by one, Valen repeated the procedure for the remaining four miners, fitting them with interlocking thoracic bone-carapaces and heavy shield-arms.

[Unit Loyalty: 100/100 (Absolute Devotion)]

The five men stood up from their slabs in unison.

Torin flexed his new bone-blade, sending a low vibration through the stone floor.

He slammed his right fist against his bone-armored chest.

“We are your wall, Lord Valen!”

By noon, the bell at the outer arch rang—not three sharp strikes for battle, but a long, slow toll for visitors.

Valen walked out onto the main rampart alongside Marcus.

Outside the bone-pass, a ragged line of nearly two hundred refugees huddled in the cold wind.

Men, women, and children clutched wooden carts and thin blankets, their faces gaunt from starvation.

At the front of the line, a young woman knelt beside a collapsed elderly man.

She wore a stained tunic, but her posture was surprisingly composed.

Her long, silver-grey hair was tied back with a leather strip, and her bright amber eyes flared with desperate determination as Valen approached the gate.

“My Lord!” Lyra called out, raising her hands to show she carried no weapons.

Her voice was steady trotz her trembling, frostbitten hands.

“We fled Lord Vane’s territory!

He doubled our grain taxes to fund his war engine, and the drought has dried the wells.

Please…

give us work, give us safety!

We will dig your mines or carry your stone!”

Marcus stepped forward, lowering his bone-shield.

“My Lord, feeding nearly two hundred extra mouths will strain our stored rations.”

“Their bodies are weak, Marcus, but their labor is an asset,” Valen said coldly, his gaze locking onto Lyra.

“And some assets are priceless.”

Valen stepped down to the gate and reached out a hand, pulling Lyra to her feet.

The moment his System-infused palm touched her skin, a soft blue static arc’d between them.

Lyra gasped, her amber eyes widening as she felt the faint, thrumming pulse of the Titan vibrating through Valen.

“What…

what was that?” she whispered.

“Potential,” Valen said softly.

“What is your name?”

“Lyra, My Lord.

“You aren’t a scribe anymore, Lyra,” Valen declared, turning to Karen.

“Feed these people.

Assign the able-bodied to the perimeter fortifications.

Bring Lyra to the gatehouse—she is going to pilot our central defense array.”

An hour later, Valen stood atop the newly constructed Nerve-Scribe Tower—a slender spire of fused rib-bones and pulsating blue neural cables towering over the gate.

He seated Lyra in the central interface chair, placing a bio-helm woven from Titan-sinew over her head.

Lyra’s breath caught as her consciousness merged with the tower.

Her amber eyes turned a faint, glowing sapphire.

“I…

I can see everything, Lord Valen!

The mountains, the deep veins…

and…” Her voice suddenly went tense.

“Movement!

Eight miles north in the narrow pass!”

Through the tower’s long-range bio-radar projection, a massive holographic map bloomed in the air before Valen.

[Estimated Time to Contact: 18 Hours]

“They came faster than Kael predicted,” Marcus growled, gripping the hilt of his pick.

“It doesn’t matter,” Valen said, looking out over his transformed settlement.

Behind him stood the newly fed refugees, eager to fight for their new home; Karen, operating the high-pressure marrow cannons; Lyra, linked directly to his radar grid; and Marcus leading five bio-mechanically engineered Vanguard juggernauts.

Valen looked toward the northern horizon as the distant dust cloud of House Vane’s army appeared.

“Let Vane come,” Valen said, a dark, confident smile on his face.

“He thinks he’s marching on a ruined colony.

He’s marching into a bio-mechanical meat grinder.”
