The tunnels went deep.

Deeper than the escape routes Clara had mapped. Deeper than the dungeons of my castle. Deeper than anything I'd explored in six hundred years of loops. The stone walls grew smoother as we descended, the rough-hewn rock giving way to the same polished darkness I'd seen in the Caves of Glass.

Clara led with her lantern, the flame casting strange shadows on the walls. The runes were everywhere now. Not just carved into the stone, but glowing faintly, responding to our presence.Full novel: I’ve Died 99 Times to the Saintess. "The chamber is just ahead," Clara said. "I found it during the evacuation. The tunnel splits about fifty feet back, and one branch leads to a sealed door. The runes on the door match the ones on this tablet."

"Sealed how?" I asked.

"I couldn't open it. But I think you two can."

She stopped in front of a massive stone door. It was circular, set into the rock like a plug in a bottle. The surface was covered in the same golden runes, all of them glowing with a soft, steady light.

In the center of the door, two handprints had been carved. One on the left, one on the right. They were identical in size and shape, but the runes around them were different. The left was surrounded by symbols of Order. The right by symbols of Chaos.

"It wants both of us," Aurelia said.

"I think it wants more than that." I stepped closer, studying the door. "The handprints are positioned so that whoever touches them has to stand facing each other."

Clara raised an eyebrow. "Dramatic."

"Ancient beings, remember? They loved their symbolism."

I looked at Aurelia. She looked back at me.

"Ready?" I asked.

She nodded.

We stepped up to the door. I placed my right hand on the right print. She placed her left hand on the left print. We stood facing each other, close enough that I could feel her breath on my skin.

The runes flared.

The door began to move. Not swinging open, but dissolving, the stone turning to light and flowing away like water. In seconds, there was nothing left but an archway, bright and welcoming.

"That was easy," Clara said.

"Too easy," I muttered.

We stepped through.

The chamber was massive.

It was circular, like the shrine in the Ashen Expanse, but larger. Much larger. The ceiling soared above us, lost in shadow. The walls were covered in the golden runes, all of them burning bright, illuminating the space with warm, steady light.

In the center of the chamber, on a raised platform of black stone, a crystal floated in midair.

It was the third fragment.

I could feel it calling to me. To both of us. The resonance between us flared, and the crystal responded, pulsing with light in rhythm with our hearts.

"There it is," Clara breathed.

"Wait." Aurelia held up her hand. "Something's wrong."

She was right. The air in the chamber felt different. Heavy. Charged. Like the moment before a lightning strike.

The shadows at the edges of the room began to move.

Figures emerged from the walls. Not the Echoes of the Fallen we'd seen in the shrine. These were different. Solid. Armored. Their bodies were made of the same black stone as the mountain, their eyes burning with golden fire.

"The Guardians," Clara whispered. "I read about them in the tablet. They protect the fragment from those who are unworthy."

"How do we prove we're worthy?" I asked.

"I don't know. The tablet didn't say."

The stone figures didn't move. They just stood there, watching us with those burning eyes. Waiting.

"Maybe they want us to take it," Aurelia said. "Maybe that's the test."

"Or maybe they'll attack the moment we try."

"Only one way to find out."

I stepped toward the platform. The guardians didn't move.

I took another step. Still nothing.

I was ten feet from the crystal now. I could feel its warmth. Its power. The resonance between us was so strong that I could barely think.

I reached out.

The guardians moved.

They were fast. Much faster than anything made of stone should be. One of them lunged at me, its stone fist swinging toward my head. I threw myself sideways, rolling across the smooth floor. The fist hit the ground where I'd been standing and shattered the stone.

"Seraphina!" Aurelia's voice rang out.

She was already moving, her sword flashing. The blade hit the guardian's stone body and bounced off, leaving barely a scratch.

"They're too hard!" she shouted.

Clara grabbed my arm and pulled me back. "There's another way. The tablet. It mentioned something about the guardians. They only respond to the resonance."

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know! But hitting them with swords isn't working!"

I looked at the guardians. There were six of them, spread across the chamber. They were advancing slowly, their stone bodies grinding as they moved.

"The resonance," I said. "The Harmony Pulse. Maybe that's what they want."

Aurelia fought her way to my side. "The Pulse might bring the mountain down on us."

"Then we use a smaller version. Just enough to show them we're connected."

She hesitated, then nodded.

We took each other's hands. The resonance flared, not the explosive power of the Pulse, but something subtler. A warm current that flowed between us, through us, around us.

The guardians stopped.

The golden light in their eyes flickered. Then, slowly, they lowered their fists.

"They're standing down," Clara said. "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it."

We held the connection steady. The guardians watched us for a long moment. Then, one by one, they stepped back and knelt.

"They're bowing," Aurelia whispered.

"They recognize the bond. The original soul. We're their masters."

I walked toward the platform. The guardians didn't move.

I reached the crystal and touched it.

The world dissolved into light.

The visions came faster this time.

I saw the two women. Lyra and Sera. Not in the garden or the burning city, but here. In this very chamber. They were standing together, their hands touching, their eyes closed.

"The war is coming," Lyra said. "The gods will not stop until we are destroyed."

"Then we hide the fragments," Sera replied. "We scatter our power across the world. So that one day, when we return, we can find it again."

"You're speaking as if we'll be reborn."

"We will be. The soul cannot be destroyed. Only divided."

Lyra opened her eyes. They were bright with tears.

"I don't want to forget you," she whispered.

Sera took her face in her hands. "You won't. Not forever. One day, in another life, you'll find me again. And when you do, I'll remember."

"How can you be sure?"

Sera smiled. "Because I'll never stop looking."

The vision faded.

I was back in the chamber. The third fragment was in my hand, warm and pulsing. The guardians had risen and were retreating into the walls, their golden eyes fading into darkness.

Aurelia stood beside me. Her face was wet with tears.

"You saw it too," I said.

She nodded. "They were here. In this exact spot. They hid the fragments together."

"The third one. We have it now."

She looked at me. "Three down. Two to go."

The air shimmered.

I read the notification twice.

"The next fragment is in the Sky Temple," I said. "And the gods are actively hunting us now."

Clara let out a long breath. "Great. Because the army outside wasn't enough of a problem."

The ground shook. Dust rained from the ceiling. The distant sound of stone grinding against stone echoed through the chamber.

"The siege," Aurelia said. "The army is still attacking."

"Then we need to get back up there." I clutched the fragment to my chest. It dissolved into light, joining the others. The warmth spread through me, and I felt the resonance grow stronger.

"Can you use the Pulse again?" Clara asked.

"I don't know. The System warned us about overuse."

"We might not have a choice." Aurelia's hand found mine. "If the gate falls, everyone dies."

I looked at her. Then at Clara. Then at the empty archway where the door had been.

"Then let's go make sure the gate doesn't fall."

We ran.
