Rei did not answer Satoru that night.

He wanted to.

That was why he did not.

The letter lay inside its plain folder on the family room table, refolded along Satoru’s crooked crease and weighted by a small river stone Sayuri had taken from the eastern garden years ago. No one had asked why she chose that stone. Rei suspected the answer would be either beautiful or unbearable, and he was too tired for both.

He read the last part again.

P.S. Someone tried to review the letters. I told him I would start writing down what I see in the house.

P.P.S. He left.

It was funny.

It was supposed to be funny.

That was the problem.

Satoru had written it like a victory. Maybe it had felt like one. A servant or attendant came too close to something private, and Satoru pushed back with the only thing the adults around him truly feared from him: not anger, not disobedience, not childish rudeness, but accurate sight turned outward.

I see a lot.

Rei understood the impulse so well that it made him ashamed.

He had spent years surviving by seeing what people wished he did not see, writing what records tried to flatten, noticing residue under clean sentences and hidden gaps behind walls. To be told that someone had tried to read a private letter and to answer with the threat of observation felt satisfying in a way he did not trust.

Because it worked.

Because it was cruel.

Because sometimes cruelty working made it harder to reject quickly.

Haruto did not lecture him immediately.

That was suspicious.

Sayuri did not either.

That was worse.

They let him sit with the letter until the lamp flame shortened and the shadows in the room grew soft around the edges. Rei expected the System to open. It did not. Perhaps it had learned restraint. More likely, this problem did not fit neatly into a slot.

Finally, Haruto said “You know why you are not answering tonight”

Rei looked up.

“Yes”

“Say it”

Rei looked at the letter.

“Because I want to defend him”

Sayuri’s gaze softened.

Haruto’s did not, but his voice stayed quiet.

“Against whom?”

“Adults who treat his privacy as something they can manage”

“And?”

Rei’s fingers tightened around his sleeve.

“Against the idea that what he did was only wrong”

Haruto nodded once.

“There it is”

Sayuri leaned forward.

“It was not only wrong”

Rei blinked.

Haruto looked at her.

Sayuri did not look away.

“It was a child protecting something private with the weapon adults gave him. That matters”

Haruto’s mouth tightened.

“Yes”

“But?” Rei asked

Sayuri looked at him.

“But if seeing becomes his answer to violation, he will learn to make everyone else naked to stay clothed”

The room went very still.

Rei looked down at the paper again.

The handwriting seemed younger now.

Or maybe he was finally letting it be young.

Haruto folded his hands inside his sleeves.

“Satoru Gojo can hurt people by telling the truth”

Rei nodded.

“Yes”

“So can you”

That landed harder.

Rei looked up.

Haruto held his gaze.

“You think of lies as dangerous. Good. They are. But truth can be lazy too. Truth can be revenge. Truth can be a knife you call clean because the blade is accurate”

Sayuri’s eyes moved to the river stone.

“Plain words are not every word”

Rei’s throat tightened.

That sentence hurt.

It should have been obvious.

It was not.

Plain words had become holy in his head somewhere between the school annex and Satoru’s ugly stamp. Not officially. Not consciously. But close enough that he had begun treating unsoftened truth as if refusing to clean it made it automatically right.

It did not.

A child’s note should not be corrected.

That did not mean every secret deserved exposure.

A report should not erase the person.

That did not mean every person should be written into a report.

Rei exhaled slowly.

“I almost made another shrine”

Sayuri looked at him.

“To plain words?”

“And to him”

Haruto said nothing.

That was mercy.

Rei picked up the letter.

“I need to tell him he was wrong”

Sayuri’s expression changed.

Not approval.

Respect.

“Not only wrong” she said

“I know”

“Good”

Haruto looked relieved in the most restrained possible way, which meant his shoulders lowered by perhaps one degree.

“You answer tomorrow”

Rei nodded.

“Yes”

“And not as his conscience”

Rei looked up.

Haruto’s eyes were steady.

“As what?”

“As the child he wrote to”

That answer stayed with him longer than the letter.

The next morning, Rei did not start with a draft.

He started by walking.

The eastern garden was still damp, and the old plum tree had given up the last of its blossoms days earlier. New leaves had taken their place, small and green and almost offensively ordinary. The world kept replacing beauty with work. That seemed unfair. Also accurate.

Sayuri found him near the stones.

She carried no tea, no notebook, no brush.

Just herself.

That made the conversation more dangerous.

“You are rehearsing” she said

“I am trying not to”

“Same thing, if you do it badly”

Rei looked at the tree.

“How do I tell him not to use what he sees as a threat without sounding like an adult trying to make him harmless?”

Sayuri stood beside him.

“You cannot control how it sounds to every part of him”

“That is not helpful”

“It is very helpful. You simply wanted comfort”

He glanced at her.

She smiled faintly.

“You are not wrong”

“I try”

He looked back at the tree.

“What would you say?”

Sayuri was silent for a moment.

Then she said “I would tell him that privacy is not a reward for people who can hide well enough”

Rei turned that over.

It sounded like her.

It also sounded like something Satoru might actually understand, which made it dangerous in the correct direction.

Sayuri continued “And I would not make the attendant into the center of the letter. If you defend the attendant too much, Satoru may hear only that you chose the adult over him”

“I do not know the attendant”

“Exactly”

“So I answer the act”

“Yes”

“Not the person”

“Not this time”

Rei nodded slowly.

At the veranda, Haruto appeared with two practice charms in hand.

“That is enough gardening”

Sayuri looked amused.

“Was he gardening?”

“He was standing near plants while thinking too much. It counts as Mikage gardening”

Rei almost smiled.

Haruto tossed one charm to him.

Rei caught it.

“Training?”

“Before letter writing”

“Why?”

“Because moral clarity is easier when your body is tired enough to stop performing wisdom”

Sayuri’s eyes warmed.

“That was also well said”

Haruto ignored her again.

Rei was beginning to suspect this was his father’s love language.

Training was miserable.

Not brutally so. Haruto did not push him toward collapse. He pushed him toward irritation, which was worse because Rei remained aware enough to understand each failure. Thread cursed energy through a charm while answering questions. Hold surface imperfection while maintaining internal reserve stillness. Shift from record language to ordinary speech. Stop making every answer sound like a document.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

Haruto attacked the last one hardest.

“What did Satoru do?”

“He threatened exposure in response to attempted correspondence review”

A pebble hit Rei in the shoulder.

“Again”

“He scared someone off”

“Better. What is the problem?”

“He used seeing as a weapon”

Another pebble.

“Less elegant”

“He made privacy depend on being more frightening than the person who crossed it”

No pebble.

Haruto nodded.

“Keep that”

Rei rubbed his shoulder.

“You enjoy throwing things”

“I enjoy accuracy”

“You sound like Mother”

Haruto paused.

Then threw another pebble.

It missed.

Barely.

Rei wisely did not comment.

The letter took most of the afternoon.

The first draft sounded too much like a lesson.

The second sounded too gentle.

The third sounded angry at adults instead of honest with Satoru.

The fourth was close.

Rei sat with Haruto and Sayuri as the light shifted across the family room floor.

He wrote slowly.

Satoru,

I understand why he left.

I also understand why you said it.

But I think that answer is dangerous in a bad way.

If someone tries to take your privacy, making them afraid of what you can see may work. It also teaches them that your privacy exists only because you are strong enough to punish them.

That is not privacy.

That is a hostage situation with better manners.

I do not know the person who tried to review the letters. Maybe he deserved to be scared. Maybe not. But if you write down everything you see in a house, you may hurt people who were not the ones holding the door.

My mother says privacy is not a reward for people who hide well enough.

I think she is right.

Rei

P.S. Professionally weathered was still accurate.

When he finished, he did not look up.

The room was too quiet.

Haruto read it first.

Sayuri read it second.

Neither spoke.

Rei’s stomach tightened.

Finally Haruto tapped the line about the hostage situation.

“This is rude”

Rei closed his eyes.

“Too rude?”

“No”

Sayuri’s mouth curved.

“It sounds like something he might respect because it bites”

Haruto looked at her.

“That is not how we should judge letters”

“It is one way”

“It should not be”

“Yet here we are”

Rei opened his eyes.

“What do I change?”

Haruto pointed to maybe he deserved to be scared

“That line is dangerous”

“I know”

“Why keep it?”

“Because if I pretend no one ever deserves to be scared, he will stop reading”

Haruto looked at him for a long moment.

Then nodded.

Sayuri touched the final P.S.

“This helps”

Haruto sighed.

“It does”

Rei looked between them.

“You both agree?”

“Do not sound so surprised” Sayuri said

“I am surprised often”

“With reason” Haruto said

They sent the letter before Rei could rewrite it into safety.

At instruction the next day, Rei was quieter than usual.

This lasted eleven minutes.

Then Daigo noticed.

“You look like someone died”

Akiha glanced at Rei.

“No. He looks like he sent a difficult letter”

Daigo groaned.

“Another Gojo letter?”

Tomonari set down his ink tray with visible interest.

Rei looked at Akiha.

She looked back.

“You were holding your brush like you wanted it to apologize”

“That was private”

“It was visible”

Daigo sat down backward at the table because no chair had ever deserved respect from him.

“What did Gojo do?”

Rei hesitated.

Moriyama was within hearing distance.

Oda was not.

The room was not private.

Akiha said “You do not have to tell us”

Daigo scowled.

“You say that every time right before he tells us enough to make it worse”

“I wrote that he should not use what he sees as a threat” Rei said

Daigo blinked.

Tomonari went very still.

Akiha’s expression softened, then sharpened.

“Did he?”

“Someone tried to review the letters. He scared him off by saying he would write down what he saw in the house”

Daigo stared.

Then, unexpectedly, he grinned.

“That is kind of amazing”

Moriyama’s pointer hit the table from across the room.

Daigo flinched.

“I mean bad”

Moriyama did not look convinced.

Rei looked at Daigo.

“It worked”

“Exactly”

“That is the problem”

Daigo’s grin faded.

He looked away, annoyed in the way people became when a simple satisfying thing acquired a cost.

Akiha sat beside Rei.

“What did you tell him?”

“That privacy should not depend on being strong enough to punish the person who crosses it”

Tomonari absorbed that quietly.

Daigo made a face.

“That sounds like something adults should already know”

Moriyama said from the front “They do”

The room stilled.

She did not look up from the slate she was marking.

“They simply prefer knowing it after it becomes convenient”

No one knew what to say to that.

Moriyama finally looked up.

“Today’s drill is controlled disclosure”

Daigo lowered his head onto the table.

“I hate this class”

Akiha patted the air near his shoulder without actually touching him.

“That means you are learning”

“I reject learning”

“Rejected” Moriyama said “Begin”

Controlled disclosure sounded like a paperwork exercise.

It was not.

Moriyama placed the cohort in pairs and gave each pair a scenario where telling the whole truth would cause damage, telling no truth would cause different damage, and telling a softened truth would make an adult look competent while leaving someone vulnerable.

Rei and Akiha were given a scenario involving a student who saw a curse near a family shrine but did not report it because the shrine keeper was a relative.

Daigo and Tomonari were given a scenario involving a clan member misusing a training tool, which Moriyama claimed was random with the face of a liar.

Daigo said “This is not random”

Moriyama answered “Prove it or work”

He worked.

Badly at first.

Then better.

Rei and Akiha argued for twelve minutes over what the hypothetical student should say.

Akiha wanted the report to include the relative’s name.

Rei wanted to delay the name until the curse site was secured.

Akiha accused him of protecting family structure.

Rei accused her of wanting the cleanest moral answer.

She looked furious.

He realized too late that he was right and wrong at the same time.

That was the worst kind of right.

Akiha’s voice dropped.

“If the name is delayed, the relative has time to make the child look confused”

“If the name is immediate, the child becomes the battleground before the curse site is handled”

“So you leave out the adult?”

“No. You separate sequence from accusation”

“That sounds like giving the adult time”

“It sounds like keeping the child from being crushed first”

Akiha stared at him.

The anger did not leave.

It changed.

“You are thinking of Satoru”

Rei went still.

Daigo and Tomonari stopped pretending not to listen.

Moriyama absolutely listened.

Akiha continued “You are thinking of the person who crossed his privacy and the people who might be hurt if he writes everything. That is not wrong. But do not make this scenario answer your letter”

The words hit cleanly.

Rei closed his mouth.

Then lowered his head.

“You are right”

Akiha looked briefly startled.

Daigo whispered “That was fast”

Tomonari whispered “Rare”

Rei ignored both of them.

Akiha did not soften immediately.

Good.

He deserved the full correction.

After a moment, she said “Sequence and accusation can be separated, but the name cannot vanish”

Rei nodded.

“Agreed”

Their final answer was messy.

Moriyama liked it.

Of course she did.

“Messy is not failure” she said after reviewing their slate “It is often what truth looks like before someone forces it into a useful shape”

Daigo muttered “That sounds like praise for bad work”

Moriyama looked at him.

“Your work remains safe from that interpretation”

Akiha laughed first.

Rei second.

Tomonari third.

Daigo last, despite himself.

At the end of class, Akiha walked with Rei toward the gate.

She did not apologize.

He respected that.

Instead she said “I was angry because you sounded reasonable”

“That is the worst time?”

“Yes. If someone sounds cruel, it is easy. If someone sounds reasonable while leaving a person exposed, you have to work harder”

Rei nodded.

“I needed that”

“I know”

A pause.

Then she added “That was not me being smug”

“It sounded a little smug”

“It was five percent smug”

“Acceptable”

She looked at him.

“You are becoming less insufferable”

“I am honored”

“You should not be. It may be temporary”

Daigo caught up behind them.

“What may be temporary?”

“Mikage being tolerable” Akiha said

Daigo looked at Rei.

“Congratulations?”

Tomonari, behind him, said “That was almost social”

Daigo pointed back without turning.

“Do not ruin my progress”

Rei laughed.

The reply from Satoru came eight days later.

It was shorter than Rei expected.

Which meant he immediately distrusted it.

Haruto read it once.

Sayuri read it once.

Then both handed it to him without comment.

That was somehow worse than warning.

Rei,

I was mad when I read it.

Then I was mad because you were right.

That was worse.

I did not write the house down.

I wanted to.

I still want to a little.

Satoru

P.S. Hostage situation with better manners was rude.

P.P.S. It was also good.

P.P.P.S. Do not tell Moriyama I called her professionally weathered again. I used it on someone and they looked scared.

Rei read it.

His throat tightened in a way he did not expect.

He read I did not write the house down again.

Not because Satoru had suddenly become safe.

Not because the problem was solved.

Because an eight-year-old boy with the Six Eyes had wanted to use sight as a weapon and had chosen not to.

That choice mattered.

Haruto’s voice was quiet.

“Do not make a shrine”

Rei looked up.

The warning was not harsh.

It was almost gentle.

“I know”

Sayuri watched him.

This time, she did not correct him.

Maybe because he did know.

A little.

Enough for that moment.

Rei opened the System later that night.

It waited longer than usual before displaying text.

[Gojo Correspondence Thread update]

Satoru Gojo accepted correction without severing contact.

Observed:

- anger acknowledged

- restraint exercised

- continued informal trust pathway

- humor preserved without erasing weight

Risk:

high

Opportunity:

high

Thread classification remains unavailable.

Note:

Unclassified does not mean uncontrolled.

Rei stared at the final line.

Unclassified does not mean uncontrolled.

That was almost comforting.

Almost.

A second message appeared.

[Personal development note]

Host demonstrated improved boundary between:

- understanding

- responsibility

- admiration

- intervention

Soul Perception / Soul Resistance: 26%

Binding Vow Aptitude: 9%

Rei closed the System before it could become too pleased with itself.

He wrote in his notebook:

Satoru wanted to write the house down.

He did not.

This matters because he could have.

It matters because he wanted to.

It matters because he told me both.

Do not make a shrine.

Do not make him a weapon.

Do not make restraint into innocence.

He paused.

Then added:

Maybe friendship begins when someone can be angry at your correction and still answer.

He stared at the line for a long time.

Friendship.

The word looked too large.

He did not cross it out.

He did not stamp it.

The next problem arrived three days later in the form of a formal envelope.

Not from Satoru.

From the Gojo household.

Haruto read the outer seal and went very still.

Sayuri took one look and said something under her breath that Rei had never heard from her before.

It sounded elegant.

It was probably obscene.

The envelope was addressed to Haruto Mikage, with courtesy reference to Sayuri Mikage and dependent child Rei Mikage. The phrasing was polite, careful, and so clean that Rei disliked it before it was opened.

Haruto broke the seal.

Read.

His face did not change.

Then he handed it to Sayuri.

She read.

Her face did change.

Slightly.

Colder.

Rei waited.

Haruto looked at him.

“The Gojo household proposes formalizing the correspondence”

Rei’s stomach dropped.

Sayuri’s voice was soft.

“Educational exchange, supervised by family representatives, to encourage proper interfamily discipline and prevent misunderstanding”

Rei looked at the letter.

There it was.

Adults making the route cleaner.

Not because they wanted to destroy it.

Because they wanted to own it safely.

Haruto placed the letter on the table.

“They are not forbidding it”

“No” Sayuri said “They are making permission the cage”

Rei looked at the formal brushwork.

Every line was reasonable.

Every line was polite.

Every line took the messy, dangerous, living thing between two children and offered it a better room with locked windows.

He thought of the closet.

The thought was unfair.

He had it anyway.

“What happens if we refuse?” he asked

Haruto’s gaze stayed on the letter.

“They may escalate through proper channels”

“What happens if we accept?”

Sayuri answered.

“Then every word you write to Satoru becomes a lesson observed by people who believe they own the classroom”

Rei breathed.

In.

Hold.

Out.

The System opened.

[Gojo Correspondence Thread threat detected]

External adult intervention:

Formalization attempt

Risk:

- informal trust pathway containment

- correspondence converted into supervised asset

- increased administrative access

- reduced authenticity

- possible social pressure if refused

Recommendation:

Preserve route without open defiance where possible.

Rei closed it.

Haruto watched his face.

“System?”

“Yes”

“Recommendation?”

“Preserve route without open defiance where possible”

Sayuri laughed once.

No humor.

“Useful and insulting”

“Frequently” Rei said

Haruto looked at him.

“Do you want to preserve the route?”

Rei did not answer quickly.

Good.

He thought of Satoru laughing at staring being rude.

The ugly stamp.

The letter without jokes.

The sentence about bad stamps.

The choice not to write the house down.

The danger.

The arrogance.

The loneliness.

The power.

The child.

“Yes” Rei said

Haruto nodded.

“Then we do not accept”

Rei looked at him.

“That was fast”

“I am capable of speed when the answer is obvious”

Sayuri looked pleased.

Haruto noticed.

“Do not”

“I said nothing”

“You looked”

“I have eyes”

Rei almost laughed.

The formal response took the rest of the evening.

Not from Rei.

From Haruto and Sayuri.

It was a masterpiece of polite obstruction.

Rei read the final version with growing horror and admiration.

It thanked the Gojo household for its concern. It acknowledged the value of proper discipline. It agreed that misunderstanding should be avoided. It noted that Rei’s current instruction already included correspondence analysis under Moriyama Keiko’s supervision, archive ethics under Oda’s oversight, and family review appropriate to his age and station. It expressed confidence that any improper influence would be addressed through existing educational structures. It declined to create a special formal channel on the grounds that doing so would overstate the importance of a child’s minor exchange and risk producing exactly the misunderstanding the Gojo household wished to avoid.

Sayuri wrote the final sentence herself.

We therefore believe the most disciplined course is to avoid granting the matter a dignity greater than its present scale.

Rei stared at it.

Haruto looked tiredly satisfied.

Sayuri dried the ink.

“That sentence is vicious” Rei said

Sayuri smiled.

“Thank you”

Haruto said “Do not admire it too much”

“I am trying not to”

“Try harder”

They sent the response through formal channels.

Then Rei wrote a separate letter.

Not clever.

Not long.

Satoru,

A formal letter came.

They want to make the correspondence supervised.

My parents refused politely enough that I think someone will be angry while thanking them.

I still want to write.

But if writing becomes a room adults own, I would rather send fewer letters than cleaner ones.

Rei

He paused.

Then added:

P.S. My mother used a sentence so polite it should probably be registered as a weapon.

Haruto read it.

Sayuri read it.

Haruto closed his eyes at the P.S.

Sayuri said “Accurate”

Haruto said “Unfortunately”

The letter was sent through the informal route.

Whether it would survive, no one knew.

That was the point of routes.

The chapter of their lives that followed did not end with a letter back.

It ended with silence.

Three days.

Five.

Seven.

No informal dispatch.

No crooked paper.

No bad handwriting.

No Satoru.

On the eighth day, Rei found himself checking his right sleeve again.

Akiha saw.

She did not ask in front of the others.

That was kindness.

Daigo noticed anyway because he had become cursed with situational awareness.

“No reply?”

Rei looked at him.

“No”

Daigo made a face.

“That sucks”

Rei blinked.

Daigo looked away.

“What? It does”

Tomonari adjusted his sleeve.

“Formal interception is likely”

Akiha said “Or he is waiting”

Daigo looked at her.

“For what?”

“For the adults to think they won”

That was possible.

It sounded like Satoru.

It also sounded like hope, and hope was a terrible analyst.

On the tenth day, the reply arrived.

Not by courier.

Not by formal route.

Not by household dispatch.

It arrived inside a practice manual on basic barrier notation that Oda threw at Rei’s head.

He caught it badly.

“Ow”

“Read better” Oda said

Rei looked at the manual.

A strip of folded paper protruded from page thirty-two.

Akiha saw it.

Daigo saw it.

Tomonari saw it.

Moriyama, standing at the archive door, absolutely saw it.

Oda sat down and opened a different folder.

“I found an incorrectly shelved manual. How careless”

No one believed her.

Rei unfolded the strip under the table.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Rei,

They tried to make me send a supervised reply.

I said no.

Then they said silence would teach discipline.

So I am being very disciplined.

This letter is not a letter.

It is a bookmark.

Satoru

P.S. Your mother sounds terrifying.

P.P.S. Good.

Rei stared at it.

Then, slowly, carefully, he began to laugh.

Not loudly.

Not enough for the archive to become unsafe.

Enough.

Akiha leaned closer.

“What?”

He handed her the bookmark.

She read it and covered her mouth.

Daigo demanded to see.

Tomonari read over his shoulder.

Daigo grinned.

“That is so stupid”

Tomonari said “It is technically clever”

Akiha whispered “It is both”

Moriyama looked at Oda.

“You are aware this is improper”

Oda turned a page.

“I found a bookmark inside an archive donation. I cannot control literacy”

Moriyama’s scar twitched.

Rei looked at the folded strip again.

This letter is not a letter.

It is a bookmark.

Satoru had not broken the route.

He had bent it.

Not safely.

Not cleanly.

Not obediently.

But with choice.

The System opened.

[Gojo Correspondence Thread update]

Adult formalization attempt resisted by both parties.

Informal route altered:

- correspondence concealed as archival object

- Oda intermediary involvement inferred

- Moriyama awareness confirmed

- cohort partial awareness confirmed

Risk:

very high

Opportunity:

very high

Thread classification remains unavailable.

New tag:

Unsanctioned Mutual Route

Rei closed the System.

Unsanctioned Mutual Route.

That sounded like trouble wearing good shoes.

He looked at Oda.

“Thank you”

Oda did not look up.

“For what?”

“The bookmark”

“I have no idea what you mean”

“Of course”

Daigo whispered “She is lying”

Oda said “Correctly”

Akiha smiled.

Tomonari looked faintly scandalized and deeply impressed.

Rei folded the bookmark and tucked it into the manual.

Not his sleeve.

Not his notebook.

There, for now.

Between pages on basic barrier notation.

A letter pretending not to be a letter.

A route pretending not to be a route.

A friendship pretending not to be too important.

Maybe that was how dangerous things survived before they were strong enough to have names.

Not by becoming clean.

Not by becoming sacred.

By becoming a little crooked, a little funny, and difficult to file correctly.
