The first true mission report Haruto allowed Rei to copy had been written by a dead man.
Rei knew before his father told him.
Not because the handwriting shook. It did not. The characters were clean, narrow, and disciplined, written by someone who had believed that poor documentation was a form of disrespect toward the people who would risk their lives using it later. Not because the paper smelled of blood. It smelled of talisman ink, cedar storage, and the faint bitter trace of preservation charms. Not because the report said anything dramatic.
That was the problem.
Dead men in jujutsu records rarely sounded dead.
They sounded completed.
Mission site secured.
Residual threat removed.
Civilian casualties confirmed.
Sorcerer casualty recorded.
Follow-up inspection recommended.
Rei sat at the low writing table in Haruto’s record room and stared at the final line until the ink became a black seam in the world.
The record room was small, dry, and windowless, built into the inner part of the Mikage estate where moisture could not easily reach paper and careless servants were not allowed to linger. Shelves lined three walls. Each shelf held boxes. Each box held folders. Each folder held the remains of someone’s fear, failure, or survival translated into administrative language.
Haruto had told him once that records were not stories.
Rei had understood.
Now he understood better.
Stories cared where pain began.
Records cared where it could be filed.
He copied the final line carefully.
Sorcerer casualty recorded.
His brush moved one stroke at a time.
The dead man’s name was Hase Ryohei. Grade 2 sorcerer. Twenty-six years old. No inherited technique of note. Assigned to investigate recurring disappearances near an unused pedestrian underpass outside Kyoto. He had identified a cluster of weak curses gathering around the fear of confinement, darkness, and passing footsteps overhead. He had neutralized three. A fourth had formed inside the concrete wall and attacked from behind while he was writing the preliminary summary.
His assistant had survived long enough to submit the report.
Hase had not.
That was all the file said.
No favorite food.
No family.
No friend who had received the news and forgotten how to stand.
No final thought.
Only casualty recorded.
Rei’s hand tightened around the brush.
A dot of ink fell where it should not have.
Haruto looked up from across the room.
Rei froze.
The dot sat at the edge of the copied page, small and black and damning.
Haruto set down his own document.
“Too much pressure”
Rei bowed his head.
“I am sorry”
“To the paper?”
Rei blinked.
Haruto’s expression did not change.
“If you apologize to me, the page remains stained. If you apologize to the record, you are being sentimental. If you apologize to yourself, it is at least honest”
Rei looked down at the ink mark.
“I lost control”
“Yes”
That was all.
Not comfort.
Not judgment.
Only classification.
Haruto rose and crossed the room. He did not take the page away. He knelt beside Rei and placed one finger near the stain without touching it.
“What happened?”
Rei looked at the copied final line.
Sorcerer casualty recorded.
“It felt small”
Haruto waited.
“The line. For a death”
The silence that followed was not empty.
Haruto’s gaze moved to the original report, then back to Rei.
“You wanted the report to mourn him?”
Rei knew the question was a test.
He was not sure of the correct answer.
Part of him wanted to say yes. The human part. The part that remembered stories, memorial scenes, music swelling when characters died, fandom arguments over whether a death had meaning. The part that had once consumed tragedy from a safe distance and called it good writing.
Another part of him knew jujutsu reports could not afford mourning. Grief blurred details. Details killed people when blurred.
“I wanted it to remember he was a person” Rei said
Haruto studied him.
“And does it not?”
Rei looked at the file.
Hase Ryohei.
Grade 2.
No inherited technique.
Assigned location.
Threat type.
Last action.
Cause of death.
Follow-up recommendation.
A shape emerged if you knew how to read absence. A man who wrote cleanly. A man who stayed professional while alone in an underpass where the walls had learned to hate footsteps. A man who was still writing when something came through concrete behind him. A man whose assistant had survived because he had completed enough of the threat assessment first.
The record remembered.
It simply did not weep.
Rei swallowed.
“It remembers differently”
Haruto nodded once.
“Good”
Rei looked up.
His father returned to his seat.
“Copy it again. Without the stain”
Rei stared.
Haruto opened his own document.
“The dead deserve accuracy”
That lesson lasted longer than the hour.
By the time Rei finished the second copy, his wrist hurt, his eyes ached, and the name Hase Ryohei had settled somewhere unpleasant beneath his ribs.
That night, the System updated.
[Noncombat Field Recorder habit reinforced]
Record Exposure:
- Sorcerer casualty report copied
- Emotional response contained
- Accuracy maintained after correction
Public Self Construct strengthened
Masking Protocol: 55%
Rei read the number without satisfaction.
Fifty-five.
A stronger mask built from a dead man’s report.
He closed the interface and lay awake for a long time.
The next week, Haruto gave him three more files.
None involved children.
Rei noticed that immediately and hated that he noticed.
The first was a failed veil maintenance summary from a shopping district. The second was a complaint filed by a family whose support invoice had been reduced after a stronger clan claimed primary credit for the exorcism. The third was a list of minor curse clusters near schools since the Gojo birth.
That one mattered.
Rei copied it twice.
Then a third time, because Haruto made him correct spacing.
The increase was not dramatic enough for civilians to notice, but jujutsu records did not require drama to become alarming. Weak curses had always formed near schools. Children were bright sources of fear, envy, shame, loneliness, resentment, and casual cruelty. Classrooms produced residue with the efficiency of factories.
But after Satoru Gojo’s birth, the clusters had shifted.
More curses gathering around thresholds.
More around locked storage spaces.
More around places where children were separated from adults.
More reports of weak curses behaving with unusual aggression when exposed to sorcerer children.
Rei traced the numbers with his eyes.
No one had written the conclusion.
They did not need to.
The world was becoming sharper around children who could see it.
“Does this happen because of him?” Rei asked
Haruto looked up.
“The Gojo child?”
“Yes”
His father leaned back.
“That is what some believe”
“What do you believe?”
Haruto considered the document.
“Balance is a word people use when they want cruelty to sound natural”
Rei stilled.
Haruto’s voice remained calm.
“Some say curses strengthen because Satoru Gojo was born. Some say curse users became more active because his birth frightened them. Some say the clans are overreporting incidents to secure resources. Some say minor families are exaggerating danger to avoid dangerous assignments. Some say the world itself adjusts when a power that large appears”
“What do you say?”
“I say a child was born, and adults began making decisions around him. That is enough to ruin many things without blaming fate”
Rei looked at the report again.
Thresholds.
Storage spaces.
Schools.
Children.
In his first life, he had known JJK as plot. Events had causes. Characters had arcs. Tragedies had thematic weight. Even when cruel, it had structure.
Here, structure was something people imposed afterward so they could pretend the mess had been inevitable.
“Will I meet him?” Rei asked
Haruto did not answer immediately.
“No one from our family has reason to approach the Gojo heir”
That was not no.
Rei heard it.
So did Haruto.
His father closed the report folder.
“If you do meet him one day, remember that he is not an event”
Rei looked down.
“He is a child”
“Yes”
Then, after a pause, Haruto added “A dangerous one”
Rei almost smiled.
The words would have sounded absurd to anyone outside jujutsu.
They were not absurd here.
Here, children could be dangerous before they understood what danger meant.
Especially the ones everyone looked at.
Especially the ones no one did.
Preliminary instruction changed after the seal flaw incident.
Not openly.
Open changes invited questions. Quiet changes did not.
The lower chamber remained closed for repairs. Moriyama began placing more emphasis on group observation, residue classification, and controlled response drills. The assistants watched the children with slightly greater attention. Daigo Zenin was no longer allowed to volunteer first. Akiha Suda was asked more questions about barrier residue. The Inoue brothers were seated nearer the exit. Rei was given small administrative tasks whenever there was a pause.
Useful work.
Visible work.
Mask work.
He carried report tablets.
Sorted talismans.
Recorded attendance.
Held sample boxes while Moriyama explained categories.
He became part of the room’s machinery in a way that made him easier to overlook.
That was the point.
It also meant he heard more.
“Zenin branch complaint” one assistant muttered while sealing a message tube.
“About the boy?”
“About Moriyama humiliating the boy”
“He humiliated himself”
“Branch families rarely file that section honestly”
Rei kept stacking talismans.
Another day:
“Kamo observers next month?”
“Not observers. Guests”
“That means observers with better clothes”
Rei copied attendance names without reacting.
Another:
“The Gojo route changed again”
“Third time this month”
“Fourth”
A pause.
“They think there is a leak?”
“They always think there is a leak”
A lower voice.
“This time they may be right”
Rei wrote the date carefully.
Leaks around Gojo routes.
Kamo guests.
Zenin branch complaint.
None of it was plot yet.
That was what frightened him.
A tragedy did not begin when the opening theme changed.
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
It began with paperwork.
Akiha noticed his listening.
Of course she did.
She waited until Moriyama sent them to carry empty sample boxes to the storage alcove. The hallway outside the main room smelled faintly of rain and old straw mats. Their footsteps were soft. The boxes were too light to justify two people, which meant Moriyama had assigned them together intentionally or was becoming lazy.
Rei did not believe Moriyama became lazy.
Akiha held her box with both hands.
“You hear everything”
Rei did not look at her.
“No”
“You hear more than other people think”
“That is different”
“It is still dangerous”
He glanced at her.
Akiha’s expression was serious.
She had changed since the lower chamber. Not dramatically. Children did not transform cleanly from a single event, no matter what stories preferred. But she watched doorways more often. She positioned herself with her back to walls. She spoke less in groups and more when alone. Gratitude had not made her naive.
Good.
Rei preferred dangerous intelligence to soft trust.
“Are you warning me?” he asked
“Yes”
“Why?”
Akiha frowned as if the answer should be obvious.
“Because you warned me about Daigo”
“I said be careful”
“That is a warning”
“It was also obvious”
“So is this”
He had no answer.
They reached the storage alcove.
Akiha set down her box and touched one of the shelf labels.
“You are trying to become someone adults explain easily”
Rei went still.
She continued without looking at him.
“Mikage. Support. Residue. Records. Useful. Quiet. That is what they say. But sometimes you look at things like you already know where the explanation will fail”
Rei’s fingers tightened around the box.
Akiha turned.
“I am not asking why”
“That sounds like asking”
“It is not. Asking would make you lie”
The bluntness surprised him.
She did not smile.
“My mother says people lie worst when they think truth would make them alone”
Rei stared at her.
For one dangerous second, he forgot she was seven.
Then he remembered that jujutsu families did not raise children in years. They raised them in precautions.
“What does your mother say about people who notice too much?” Rei asked
Akiha lowered her gaze.
“That they become useful or dead”
Rei almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because every family in this world had its own way of handing children a knife and calling it wisdom.
“Your mother sounds sensible”
“She is afraid”
“Those are often the same thing”
Akiha looked back up.
For the first time, there was something like agreement between them that did not depend on a rescued child, a humiliated Zenin, or a shared task.
Only understanding.
Small.
Unstable.
Real.
Then footsteps approached.
Both children turned at once.
Moriyama stood at the end of the hallway.
Her expression said she had heard enough to be interested and not enough to be satisfied.
“Boxes do not require philosophical discussion to be stored”
Akiha bowed.
“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”
Rei did the same.
Moriyama’s gaze moved between them.
“You are children. Try gossiping about something age-appropriate”
Neither answered.
The scar along Moriyama’s mouth twitched.
“That was not a request”
After she left, Akiha whispered “What is age-appropriate?”
Rei thought of cartoons, school lunches, toys, games, complaints about homework, birthday gifts, favorite sweets, arguments over whose parent was stricter, the entire lost continent of ordinary childhood.
He picked up an empty box.
“I do not know”
Akiha considered that.
“Maybe sweets”
“Do you like sweets?”
“Yes”
“What kind?”
She looked uncomfortable.
Apparently this was harder than discussing social survival.
“Persimmon jelly”
Rei nodded gravely.
“I will remember that”
Akiha looked at him strangely.
“What do you like?”
Rei paused.
He had liked things once.
In his first life. Snacks eaten while reading chapters illegally late at night. Convenience store fried food. Bitter coffee he pretended to enjoy because exhaustion made it necessary. The fake strawberry taste of cheap candy. The comfort of warm rice when too tired to cook anything else.
In this life, Sayuri sometimes made sweet red bean soup when it rained.
He said “Red bean soup”
“That is not a sweet”
“It is sweet”
“It is soup”
“Then I like soup”
Akiha stared.
Then she laughed.
Quietly, because the hallway had ears, but genuinely enough that Rei felt something inside him shift.
A mask worked best when it resembled a face.
Perhaps a face required more than lies.
Perhaps it required preferences.
That evening, the System updated.
[Peer Profile updated]
Akiha Suda:
- suspicion retained
- cooperative utility stabilized
- personal rapport initiated
- secrecy risk reduced
- social anchor potential strengthened
Public Self Construct strengthened
Masking Protocol: 58%
Rei stared at personal rapport initiated and felt accused.
The System was worse than Moriyama.
At least Moriyama pretended not to write everything down in front of him.
The next month brought the Kamo guests.
They arrived with polite smiles, expensive umbrellas, and the exact amount of humility appropriate for people who expected everyone to remember their connections without being crude enough to mention them directly.
There were three adults and two children.
The adults spoke with Moriyama and the compound administrators behind screens.
The children joined preliminary instruction.
One was a boy around eight, thin and pale, with a serious mouth and the faint scent of blood threaded through his cursed energy. Not Blood Manipulation proper, Rei thought. Not main family. But close enough to carry echoes. His name was Kamo Tomonari, introduced without emphasis because emphasis was unnecessary.
The other was a girl named Miyo from a retainer household. She had sharp eyes and said nothing unless asked.
Daigo Zenin looked as if someone had poured vinegar into his soul.
Akiha became very still.
Rei understood the shape of the day immediately.
The Kamo children were not here to learn.
They were here to measure.
Moriyama’s expression when she entered suggested she had been informed of this and enjoyed it as much as one enjoyed stepping into shallow water with socks on.
“Today we review fundamentals”
That meant no one was getting what they wanted.
Rei lowered his head to hide a smile.
The first drill was basic cursed energy flow through paper charms.
Tomonari performed well. Controlled, conservative, slightly rigid. The retainer girl performed better and was ignored more, which told Rei enough about Kamo habits to file privately.
Daigo overperformed and cracked his charm.
Akiha did well.
Rei did exactly as expected.
Moderate flow.
Good correction.
Support profile.
Useful.
The second drill involved identifying curse residue under layered masking.
Rei intentionally deferred once to Akiha.
Akiha answered correctly.
Tomonari noticed.
Miyo noticed Rei noticing Tomonari noticing.
Rei decided immediately that Miyo was more dangerous than Tomonari.
During the break, Daigo approached Tomonari.
Of course he did.
“Your control is good” Daigo said
A compliment shaped like a request for alliance.
Tomonari nodded.
“As is yours”
A lie shaped like diplomacy.
Daigo accepted it as payment.
Rei sat with Akiha near the talisman boxes and pretended to review labels.
Miyo stood nearby, not close enough to be part of their conversation, not far enough to miss it.
Akiha whispered “She is listening”
Rei whispered back “Yes”
“What should we talk about?”
“Sweets”
Akiha blinked.
Then, to her credit, she adapted.
“Persimmon jelly is better in autumn”
Rei nodded.
“Red bean soup is better in rain”
“That is still soup”
“It is still sweet”
Miyo’s gaze flicked toward them.
Rei continued with the full seriousness of a child discussing urgent doctrine.
“If texture determines category, mochi is not a sweet either. It is rice”
Akiha stared at him.
Then she said “That is the worst argument I have ever heard”
“Good. Then you understood it”
Miyo looked away.
Not fooled, perhaps.
But denied useful material.
Akiha’s mouth trembled with suppressed laughter.
Rei sorted another label.
The break ended.
Moriyama’s third drill was the real one.
She placed a covered object in the center of the room and did not explain it.
The adults behind the screens went quiet.
So did the children.
Rei felt cursed energy before the cloth came off.
Thin.
Old.
Unpleasantly familiar in a way he could not place.
Moriyama removed the covering.
A finger bone lay on a lacquered tray.
Not Sukuna’s.
Rei knew that before panic could fully form. The pressure was wrong. Too small. Too dead in the ordinary way. Still, the sight struck some buried part of his memory hard enough that his breath almost caught.
A preserved human finger bone wrapped in old residue.
A test object.
A symbolic cruelty.
Or a Kamo request.
Moriyama looked at the children.
“This is a residual analysis drill. You will not touch the object. You will identify whether the residue comes from the deceased, the handler, or an external curse”
Rei kept his face still.
Finger.
Wrapped.
Cursed residue.
Yuji’s future flashed behind his eyes with such violence that the room seemed to tilt.
Fluorescent lights.
A school occult club.
Megumi bleeding.
A finger swallowed.
Sukuna’s eye opening beneath Yuji’s.
Not now
He forced his cursed energy down.
Masking Protocol tightened.
[Warning]
Emotional instability detected
Masking Protocol fluctuation: minor
Not now.
Moriyama’s gaze moved toward him for less than a second.
Too much.
He lowered his eyes as if disturbed by the bone like any child might be.
Tomonari answered first when called.
“Handler residue dominant. External curse residue minimal”
Correct.
Miyo added “The handler used preservation charms twice”
Also correct.
Akiha identified that the deceased had not been a sorcerer.
Good.
Daigo guessed external curse and was wrong.
Then Moriyama called Rei.
He looked at the tray.
The full answer sat clearly in front of him.
Non-sorcerer bone. Used as a cursed training object. Handled by three people. Preserved twice. Exposed briefly to a weak curse to layer external residue. Kamo storage ink. Transported under a veil recently repaired with substandard reinforcement. One adult behind the screen had touched the container this morning and felt irritation, not fear.
Too much.
Far too much.
He chose a smaller shape.
“Handler” he said
“Why?”
“The residue is cleaner than the bone”
Moriyama waited.
Rei added “The external curse trace is weak”
“Anything else?”
A trap again.
He let himself hesitate.
“The wrapping was stored with blood ink”
The room changed.
Slightly.
Not the children.
The adults behind the screen.
Rei realized his mistake the moment after he made it.
Blood ink was not visible. Not to ordinary residue sensitivity at his registered level. Not with the object covered until moments ago. Not unless he had read storage traces through overlapping layers.
Tomonari looked at him.
Miyo looked at him.
Akiha did not.
Moriyama’s eyes narrowed.
“Why do you say blood ink?”
Rei had one second.
Maybe less.
Ignorance was safer than denial.
But ignorance would not explain the answer.
A lie that resembled a face.
He looked confused.
“It smells like the Kamo storage tags”
Silence.
Then one of the adults behind the screen made a small sound.
Not displeased.
Interested.
Rei wanted to vanish.
Moriyama’s expression became very blank.
“Have you handled Kamo storage tags before?”
Rei shook his head.
“No”
“Then how would you know the smell?”
He looked toward Tomonari.
The Kamo boy stiffened.
Rei said “His practice charm has the same trace”
Tomonari glanced down at his sleeve where a folded charm was tucked.
That was true.
Thank God, that was true.
Moriyama looked at Tomonari.
The adults behind the screen murmured softly.
Miyo’s gaze sharpened.
Akiha finally looked at Rei, and for once her expression openly said that was close
Moriyama covered the bone.
“Acceptable”
No praise.
No mark visible from where Rei sat.
The drill continued, but the shape of the room had changed around him.
By the end of instruction, Rei had learned something important.
Masking Protocol could reduce what he appeared to be.
It could not prevent him from saying things he should not know.
That was inconvenient.
Unfortunately, it was also his fault.
When the Kamo guests left, Tomonari approached Rei at the gate.
Daigo watched from a distance with visible irritation.
Akiha watched from closer with better concealed concern.
Miyo stood beside Tomonari like a shadow that had opinions.
Tomonari bowed politely.
“Mikage-san”
Rei returned the bow.
“Kamo-san”
“You have a sensitive nose for residue”
Rei kept his face mild.
“My family works with traces”
“So I heard”
Tomonari glanced toward Haruto, who was speaking with Moriyama near the veranda.
“Do the Mikage often assist with Kamo storage?”
“No”
“Would you like to?”
There it was.
A door.
Small.
Polite.
Hungry.
Rei felt the System silent behind his eyes and wished, briefly, that it offered warnings for children with bloodline manners.
He bowed slightly.
“It would be an honor, but I am still learning basic record work under my father”
A refusal wrapped in humility.
Tomonari accepted it with a nod.
“Perhaps later”
Miyo spoke for the first time.
“Support families advance through later”
Rei looked at her.
Her voice was soft enough to be deniable.
Her eyes were not.
Akiha went still behind him.
Rei smiled.
Just a little.
“My father says later is safer than too soon”
Miyo’s expression did not change.
“Only for people who are allowed to wait”
Rei had no answer.
Tomonari glanced at her, mildly annoyed.
“Miyo”
She bowed.
“My apologies”
The Kamo children left.
Daigo looked furious that someone else had been allowed to threaten Rei politely.
Akiha came to stand beside him.
“That went badly”
“Yes”
“You smiled at her”
“I panicked”
“That is your panic?”
“Apparently”
Akiha sighed.
“You need better panic”
Rei almost laughed.
Haruto arrived before he could answer.
His father’s expression told him everything.
They did not speak until they were in the car.
Rain began again as they left the compound.
For several minutes, Haruto simply watched the city pass.
Then he said “Blood ink”
Rei closed his eyes.
“Yes”
“You identified Kamo storage trace from a charm on a boy’s sleeve”
“Yes”
“After first saying it was on the object”
Rei opened his eyes and stared down at his hands.
“Yes”
Haruto exhaled slowly.
“That was sloppy”
“I know”
“No” Haruto said “You know that it was dangerous. That is not the same as knowing why it was sloppy”
Rei looked at him.
Haruto’s face was severe.
“You answered the object before answering the room. You saw the residue and forgot the witnesses. Your technique did not betray you. Your priorities did”
Rei absorbed the words.
They hurt because they were exact.
Haruto continued.
“A field recorder does not only record evidence. He records who is present, who benefits, who reacts, who pretends not to react, and which answer will become expensive once spoken”
Rei nodded.
“I understand”
“Good. Then tell me what today cost”
Rei looked out the window.
The answer formed slowly.
“Kamo interest”
“Yes”
“Miyo noticed I corrected too fast”
“Yes”
“Tomonari may report that I am useful”
“Yes”
“Daigo will resent the Kamo interest”
“Yes”
“Akiha knows I made a mistake”
Haruto paused.
Then nodded.
“Yes”
“And Moriyama-sensei knows I know it was a mistake”
Haruto looked at him for a long moment.
Then he leaned back.
“Better”
Not good.
Better.
Rei would take it.
At home, Sayuri listened to the account with her hands folded in her lap.
When Haruto finished, she asked only one question.
“What did the Kamo girl say?”
Rei repeated it.
Support families advance through later.
Only for people who are allowed to wait.
Sayuri’s expression did not change.
But the room felt colder.
“She is not wrong” Sayuri said
Haruto frowned.
“That does not make her safe”
“No. It makes her familiar”
Rei looked between them.
Sayuri noticed.
“The Kamo family teaches even its shadows to understand timing” she said “If that girl spoke so directly, it was either because she is careless, which I doubt, or because she wanted you to remember her words more than her name”
Miyo.
Rei already remembered both.
“What should I do?”
Sayuri looked at him.
“Nothing”
Rei blinked.
Haruto nodded.
“Nothing is underused”
Sayuri continued.
“You have been seen. You have been offered a thin thread. Do not pull every thread immediately simply because you can”
The Mikage family, Rei thought, had many ways to say stop touching dangerous things
None of them worked as often as they deserved.
That night, the System opened with more messages than usual.
[Public Self Construct stress event recorded]
Incident:
- Kamo guest drill
- Excessive residue inference partially exposed
- Recovery through plausible peer comparison
- External interest increased
Profile Adjustments:
Kamo Tomonari:
- utility interest established
Miyo:
- analytical threat detected
- social approach uncertain
Daigo Zenin:
- hostility redirected by Kamo attention
- resentment volatility increased
Moriyama Keiko:
- confidence in support profile retained
- suspicion of deeper sensitivity increased
Masking Protocol: 60%
Rei rubbed his face.
Sixty percent.
Apparently mistakes counted as construction if repaired well enough.
How generous.
The next message made him go still.
[Condition met]
Sustained record exposure
Public concealment strategy active
High-pressure inference correction survived
Cursed energy restraint maintained under emotional trigger
New Category unlocked:
Cursed Energy Quantity
The room seemed to narrow.
Rei sat up.
The interface waited.
[Available Extraction]
Category: Cursed Energy Quantity
Proceed?
He stared.
This was different.
Control had kept him alive.
Body had given him development.
Reinforcement had made survival quieter.
Quantity would change the foundation of everything.
Too little cursed energy meant limits. Hard limits. Even with clean control, even with reinforcement, even with a body that adapted too well, he was still a child from a minor family with modest reserves. That was part of the mask. Part of his report. Part of why he could be dismissed as support-inclined.
A large reserve would be a lantern.
A vast reserve would be a sun.
Unless the Masking Protocol held.
Unless he did not draw on it.
Unless he learned restraint before capacity.
Rei almost closed the System.
Then he remembered Hase Ryohei.
Writing in an underpass while something came through the wall behind him.
He remembered Hayato’s foot almost being taken.
He remembered a wrapped finger bone on a tray and the future it had almost dragged out of him in front of Kamo eyes.
He remembered Gojo being hunted at seven because everyone else had decided what his existence meant.
Power was dangerous.
So was not having enough.
He selected proceed.
[Category selected: Cursed Energy Quantity]
[Archive Roulette spinning]
Names appeared.
Jogo.
Sukuna.
Yuta Okkotsu.
Satoru Gojo.
Mahito.
Geto.
Yuki.
Rika Orimoto flickered and vanished, rejected by classification.
The roulette spun longer than before.
Rei’s mouth went dry.
Not Sukuna
The thought was immediate and humiliating.
Not yet
The names blurred.
Stopped.

Rei could not move.
Yuta.
The name sat inside the dark interface with the weight of an ocean.
Yuta Okkotsu had not become what he would be yet. Perhaps he was not born. Perhaps he was a child somewhere with no idea that love would one day become a curse monstrous enough to alter his life. Perhaps Rika was alive, laughing, breathing, still only a girl.
Future-Imprint.
Again.
The System knew the future through him or through something worse than him.
The warning appeared.
[Warning]
Future-Imprint template lacks present-world anchor
Effects will express as expandable cursed energy reserve foundation rather than full manifested adult reserve
Juvenile vessel limitations enforced
Basic Masking Protocol may suppress passive leakage if output remains constrained
High emotional stress may cause reserve bleed
Equip?
Reserve bleed.
That sounded bad.
That sounded like exactly the kind of thing that would make Gojo, Tengen, Kenjaku, or anyone with good senses turn their head.
Rei closed his eyes.
He could archive it and wait.
That would be sensible.
He had already learned the cost of rushing with Yuji’s template. Pain, suspicion, hidden physical changes. Quantity would be worse. Energy did not stay politely inside a body simply because one wished it to. Children leaked cursed energy when emotional. Sorcerer children did so more. A child with a vast future-imprint reserve could become impossible to explain if frightened, angry, feverish, or careless.
He should wait.
He should.
A small line appeared beneath the prompt.
[Archived templates cannot develop while inactive]
Rei stared at it.
Of course.
Of course the System waited until now to say that.
Yuji’s body template developed because it was equipped. Kusakabe’s control became natural because it stayed active. Nanami’s reinforcement refined through training because he used it. If Yuta’s quantity remained archived, it would remain potential, not foundation.
To become monstrous later, he had to begin becoming monstrous now.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Under a mask strong enough to hold.
Rei thought of Sayuri saying become someone they can understand
He thought of Haruto saying do not let anyone else be the first to tell you what that means
He thought of Gojo, born already beyond explanation.
Rei had to build what Gojo had been given.
That meant starting before anyone could see the shape.
He selected equip.
The room did not explode.
No pressure crushed the walls.
No aura flooded the estate.
No curse screamed from the roof.
For one long breath, nothing happened.
Then cursed energy opened inside him like a door at the bottom of the sea.
Rei clapped both hands over his mouth.
Not from pain.
From terror.
There was more.
Not much at once. The System had warned him: developmental foundation, juvenile limitations. His body was not suddenly overflowing with Yuta Okkotsu’s future monstrous reserve.
But the space inside him had changed.
Before, his cursed energy had been a cup.
Small, dark, manageable.
Now the cup sat at the edge of something deeper.
A well under the floor.
A reservoir behind stone.
Not full.
Not accessible in whole.
But there.
Waiting.
Growing.
His breathing hitched.
The Masking Protocol tightened violently.
[Cursed Energy Quantity equipped]
[Yuta Okkotsu — Future-Imprint]
Expression Mode: Developmental Reserve Foundation
Basic Masking Protocol engaged
Passive leakage suppressed
Warning:
Current external profile cannot support visible reserve expansion
Recommended:
- continue low-output training
- avoid emotional instability
- avoid direct high-grade sensory inspection
- avoid prolonged proximity to Six Eyes
Rei laughed once.
A broken, silent thing.
Avoid prolonged proximity to Six Eyes.
Wonderful.
He lived in the same era as Satoru Gojo.
Avoiding him was both the plan and the impossibility waiting at the end of the plan.
Another message appeared.

Rei lowered his hands slowly.
His palms were damp.
He could feel the new reserve only when he looked inward. Otherwise, the mask folded over it, pressing the surface flat. That was not comfort. It was pressure. Like standing on thin ice above deep water and trusting the ice because falling through was worse.
A floorboard creaked outside.
Rei’s heart lurched.
The reserve stirred.
The Masking Protocol held.
Barely.
The door slid open.
Sayuri stood there with a lamp in one hand.
Rei froze.
His mother looked at him.
At the room.
At the charm near his bed.
At nothing the System showed and everything his face failed to hide.
“You are awake” she said
“Yes”
She entered.
Her steps were quiet.
The lamp cast warm light across the walls, turning the paper screens gold. Rei sat very still beneath his blanket, cursed energy folded so tightly around the hidden well inside him that his chest hurt.
Sayuri sat beside him.
For a moment, she only looked.
Then she reached out and touched his forehead.
Not checking for fever.
Checking for presence.
Rei knew the difference.
Her hand paused.
Not because she sensed Yuta’s reserve.
The Masking Protocol held.
But because mothers had their own techniques, unnamed and unfair.
“You feel far away tonight” she said
Rei’s throat tightened.
“I am here”
Sayuri’s fingers rested against his hair.
“That is not always the same thing”
He looked down.
The room was quiet.
Too quiet.
If he spoke, something might spill. Not the System. Not the future. But fear. And fear had residue too.
Sayuri set the lamp down.
“Did the records trouble you?”
“Yes”
“Which part?”
He thought of the wrapped finger bone.
Of Yuta’s name.
Of the impossible well inside him.
“The part where people become lines”
Sayuri’s face softened with pain.
“Ah”
She did not ask which report.
Perhaps Haruto had already told her.
Perhaps she knew that all reports became the same eventually if a child read enough of them too young.
She adjusted his blanket.
“Then remember the names”
Rei looked up.
“What?”
“Lines are necessary. Names are kinder. If the record cannot mourn, someone still can”
His chest hurt.
“Hase Ryohei” he whispered
Sayuri nodded.
“Hase Ryohei”
The name settled in the room.
Not enough.
Something.
Rei held the blanket tightly.
His hidden cursed energy stirred again, not violently this time, but with a deep slow movement that felt almost like grief finding space.
The Masking Protocol shivered.
Sayuri’s eyes narrowed.
For one terrifying second, Rei thought she had felt it.
Then she only brushed his hair back from his forehead.
“You are growing too quickly” she said
He almost stopped breathing.
She continued.
“Not your body. You”
Rei looked away.
Sayuri stayed beside him until his breathing slowed.
Before leaving, she placed a fresh charm near the door.
“For sleep?” Rei asked
“For doors”
He frowned.
She smiled faintly.
“Some things should knock before entering”
After she left, Rei did not reopen the System.
He did not need to.
He could feel it.
The well beneath the floor.
The mask above it.
The names around him.
Kusakabe.
Yuji.
Nanami.
Yuta.
People who were alive somewhere, or would be, or had not yet become the selves his System had archived. People reduced to templates inside him and names he had no right to carry.
He whispered them once.
Not as powers.
As debts.
Then he added the dead man’s name.
“Hase Ryohei”
Outside, Kyoto slept beneath rain.
Somewhere, Gojo remained the brightest child in the world.
Somewhere, the future waited with its teeth hidden behind paperwork, lineage, and sealed fingers.
Rei Mikage lay in the dark with an ocean folded inside him and a mask barely strong enough to keep the surface still.
For the first time since the storehouse curse, he truly understood the danger of becoming strong.
Strength did not only make you harder to kill.
It gave the world more reasons to try.
