Keeper of faces

Chapter 5 / 39

BENEATH THE BROKEN SEAL

Keeper of faces

"Welcome back... Uriel."

The voice did not fade.

It lingered inside the chamber, vibrating through the stone beneath our feet until every crack in the floor hummed with quiet life.

The darkness pouring from the fractured seal continued to rise, twisting like black smoke before gathering into a towering column. It had no face. No shape that the eye could truly understand. Every time I looked directly at it, it seemed to change.

The twelve stone guardians remained kneeling.

None dared to move.

Beside me, Veyra tightened her grip on her sword.

"Whatever that is..."

"It isn't human."

Before either of us could take another step, hurried footsteps echoed from the corridor behind us.

Steel scraped against stone.

"Commander!"

A familiar voice called out.

The sealed doorway shuddered violently before splitting apart. Broken slabs crashed onto the chamber floor, revealing six of Veyra's soldiers forcing their way inside.

Captain Darius entered first, his broad shield raised. Ash coated his bronze armor, and blood stained the edge of his spear.

Behind him came Lyra, a young archer with a fresh cut across her forehead, followed by Garron, Merek, Tovin and Ellis, veterans who had survived countless battles under Veyra's command.

They stopped the moment they saw the chamber.

"What... is this place?" Garron whispered.

"No one knows," Veyra answered without looking away from the darkness.

Darius stepped beside her.

"We lost contact with the rest of the company."

"How many escaped?"

His silence answered the question.

Veyra lowered her eyes for only a moment.

"We mourn them later."

"Yes, Commander."

A low growl rolled through the chamber.

The darkness was changing.

It shrank inward until it formed a sphere no larger than a man's chest. Inside its surface, faint lights drifted like distant stars trapped beneath black water.

The voice returned.

"The First Gate remains sealed..."

"...but its chains weaken."

My mask burned against my face.

"What are you?"

Silence.

Then...

"A witness."

The answer revealed nothing.

Captain Darius frowned.

"My lord... should we destroy it?"

The sphere laughed softly.

"You may try."

Without waiting for orders, Garron charged.

His battle axe swung with enough force to split stone.

The blade passed straight through the darkness.

Nothing.

Momentum carried him forward.

The sphere erupted.

Invisible force blasted through the chamber.

Garron was hurled across the room, crashing into a pillar with a sickening crack.

"Medic!" Lyra shouted.

Merek rushed to Garron's side while Ellis covered them with his shield.

Garron coughed, forcing blood onto the floor.

"I... couldn't touch it..."

"No," the voice replied calmly.

"You cannot strike memory with steel."

The words settled uneasily over the chamber.

Veyra raised her sword.

"Enough riddles."

"What happened to this place?"

The darkness drifted toward the fractured seal.

"You stand beneath the throne..."

"...where kings were crowned."

"...where Keepers were chosen."

"...where the First Gate was bound."

Each sentence echoed longer than the last.

I stepped closer despite every instinct warning me not to.

"My name."

The sphere became still.

"You remember it."

"You called me Uriel."

"Who am I?"

For the first time...

The voice hesitated.

"You are..."

The chamber trembled violently.

A deafening explosion echoed somewhere above.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Captain Darius looked upward.

"The upper halls!"

Another explosion followed.

Then another.

Lyra ran toward the broken entrance.

"Commander!"

She looked back, panic filling her eyes.

"The Citadel is under attack!"

Before Veyra could answer, dozens of terrified voices echoed through the corridors.

"Fall back!"

"Black Blades!"

"They're everywhere!"

"They've breached the western halls!"

Steel clashed.

Men screamed.

The battle had reached them.

Veyra turned instantly.

"Darius."

"Take Ellis and Tovin."

"Hold the entrance."

"Lyra, find survivors."

"Merek, stay with Garron."

No one questioned her.

They moved immediately.

Years of discipline overcame fear.

The clash of swords erupted just beyond the chamber.

Moments later, Ellis staggered backward through the doorway.

Three arrows protruded from his shield.

"They're here!"

Black-clad figures flooded into the corridor.

Iron masks.

Curved blades.

Black Blades.

The first assassin lunged.

Darius met him with his shield.

Steel rang through the chamber.

Another assassin vaulted over the shield wall, only for Lyra's arrow to bury itself in his throat.

He collapsed before reaching the seal.

More poured inside.

Five.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Far more than before.

They ignored everyone else.

Every pair of eyes fixed on me.

"The Keeper."

One of them spoke.

"Take him alive."

I felt the mask pulse.

Not with rage.

With certainty.

"They know me."

Veyra stepped between me and the assassins.

"They'll have to kill us first."

The battle erupted.

Darius held the narrow entrance like an immovable wall, driving enemies backward with every shield strike.

Ellis fought beside him despite the arrows embedded in his shield, his sword flashing through the confined passage.

Lyra climbed onto a fallen pillar, releasing arrows with calm precision.

Every shot found its mark.

Merek dragged Garron behind cover before drawing twin short swords to defend him.

The chamber became chaos.

I met the first assassin head-on.

Our blades collided.

He twisted expertly, trying to force me away from the center seal.

Not toward it.

Away from it.

That caught my attention.

They weren't protecting the Gate.

They were preventing me from reaching it.

Why?

The assassin answered with another strike.

I parried and drove my shoulder into his chest, sending him crashing across the marble floor.

Another came from my left.

Then another.

The mask whispered.

Not loudly.

Just enough.

Faster.

I refused.

It whispered again.

Stronger.

"No."

The word escaped my lips before I realized it.

The nearest assassin froze for the smallest fraction of a second.

That hesitation cost him everything.

My blade swept across his chest.

He fell.

The remaining assassins retreated several steps instead of advancing.

Fear.

Not of me.

Of the mask.

The sphere hovering above the broken seal watched the battle in silence.

Then it spoke.

"They have arrived too soon."

A thunderous roar shook the entire chamber.

The fractured seal split wider.

The crimson light beneath it intensified until it illuminated every face in the room.

The Black Blades immediately stopped fighting.

One by one...

They knelt.

Even the wounded.

Even those surrounded by Veyra's soldiers.

Every assassin lowered his head toward the widening crack.

A deep voice emerged from beneath the Gate.

Far older.

Far more terrible.

"The seal..."

"...is breaking."

The darkness surrounding the fissure expanded another inch.

The chamber temperature plummeted.

Frost spread across swords, armor, and stone.

Even the fire burning outside the shattered windows dimmed.

Captain Darius looked toward Uriel.

"My lord..."

"What have we awakened?"

I had no answer.

Because somewhere beneath the Citadel...

Something had begun to wake.

And it knew my name.
