Garrick lay face-first on the plush rug, his massive frame twitching slightly as his lungs slowly remembered how to process oxygen. The blunt force of Elara’s assault had completely bypassed his Berserker armor.

Elara stood over him, her face a mask of serene, clinical perfection. Her breath wasn't even hurried. As she smoothly retracted her right arm, the air around her palms still vibrated faintly from the activation of her passive vanguard modifier—the raw, physical strength multiplier she had inherited from Fen. Combined with her own high-density human bones, that brief burst of beastkin muscle had turned a standard palm strike into a bone-rattling demolition charge.

She turned her silver-lashed eyes toward the far corner of the room, her posture resetting into a pristine, upright stance.

Standing near the heavy mahogany exit door was the final member of the Iron Vanguard: Bridget, the party’s Shield-Maiden.

Bridget was a tall, heavily built woman, her broad shoulders and powerful thighs encased in layers of gleaming, high-tier steel plate armor. In her left hand, she held a massive, enchanted tower shield etched with defensive runes that could withstand a direct blast of dragon fire.

But right now, the massive steel shield was trembling.

Bridget looked at the unconscious Mage on the table. She looked at the Rogue with the fractured jaw. Then she looked down at Garrick—the strongest frontliner in the Silver-Rank circuit—who had just been systematically dismantled in under ten seconds by a woman wearing a starched white apron and a lace collar.

A heavy bead of sweat rolled down Bridget’s flushed cheek, disappearing into the collar of her armor.

"I..." Bridget swallowed hard, her grip tightening on the handle of her shield as Elara took a single, silent step forward. "I am a defensive specialist. My shield-wall rating is unmatched in the lower districts. But I don't think my armor can withstand whatever... overwhelming physical multiplier you just used on my captain."

"A very accurate structural assessment," Elara replied, her voice a cool, pleasant melody that contrasted sharply with the violent debris scattered around the room. She idly adjusted the lace trim of her cuffs, keeping her hands visible and completely relaxed. "Your party’s protection invoice is officially past due. Do you wish to test the limits of your shield's durability stats, or are we going to settle this ledger amicably?"

Bridget didn't hesitate.

With a loud, ringing CLANG that rattled the floorboards, she unclasped the heavy leather straps and let the massive steel tower shield slam face-first onto the carpet. She immediately raised both of her gauntleted hands in total, unmitigated surrender, her face burning a deep, furious shade of crimson.

"I surrender," Bridget panted, her voice tight as she stared at the maid’s unblinking, apex-predator gaze. "Take the gold. Take whatever the guild sent you for. If I go back to the Upper District after a total wipe like this, the Vanguard's backers will have me executed anyway. Just... don't leave me here."

"A highly professional decision," Elara murmured deadpan.

She walked past the trembling Shield-Maiden without a glance, using her heavy iron crowbar to cleanly pop the lock on the party's reinforced iron lockbox. Inside, neatly stacked in silk pouches, were the 15,000 stolen gold coins. Elara scooped the heavy bags into her deep apron pockets, the fabric holding the weight effortlessly.

She turned back to Bridget, offering her a cool, assessing look. The woman was built like a fortress—loyal, highly durable, and excellent for frontline containment. Exactly the kind of asset the penthouse needed to handle the expanding workspace.

"The laundry load at our current facility has drastically increased, Bridget, and the beastkin have a habit of leaving the common areas in severe disarray," Elara announced, turning toward the window exit. "Grab your shield. Your orientation shift begins immediately."

Elara slid out of the tavern’s second-story window with fluid, rubber-bone grace, her boots dropping soundlessly onto the damp brickwork of the alleyway below. Right behind her came Bridget, her heavy steel plate armor clanking with an awkward, metallic rattle that made the tall Shield-Maiden wince in the dark.

"Quiet, please," Elara murmured deadpan, not even turning around as she smoothed down her pristine white apron. "The ambient noise level of this sector may already be high, but your greaves are audible over all of it."

"Sorry," Bridget whispered, her face burning a deep crimson as she clutched her massive tower shield against her chest. "I’m not exactly built for stealth operations."

Thwip.

A shadow detached itself from the top of a stack of wooden crates near the alley entrance. Bridget instantly tensed, her defensive instincts flaring as she began to raise her shield, but Elara didn't even skip a beat.

It was Hops. The rabbit-kin scout was wearing her lightweight leather courier harness, her long, furry ears snapping perfectly erect as she scanned the perimeter. Her button nose twitched rapidly, checking the scent lines for any pursuing city guards before her wide, amber eyes locked onto the giant, heavily armored human standing next to her Master.

Hops blinked, her ears tilting forward in absolute bewilderment. She hopped off the crates, landing with a soft patter, and walked a slow circle around the trembling Shield-Maiden.

"Uh... Master?" Hops panted, her voice low as she looked up at Bridget's towering, muscular frame. "The shadow maps said you were cleaning out a four-pack of silvers. Why did you bring one back? And... oh... you're not a furry? What do you plan to do with her?"

Bridget’s jaw twitched, her cheeks flushing even hotter under the rabbit-kin’s intense scrutiny. "I am Bridget. Former defensive vanguard for the Iron Vanguard. I have... surrendered my contract to your Head Maid."

"She is a freshly acquired domestic asset, Hops," Elara clarified, her voice a cool, pleasant melody as she slid the stolen pouches of 15,000 gold coins into her deep apron pockets. "Her defensive parameters are exceptional, which will be highly useful for lifting heavy laundry tubs. Status report on the extraction route?"

"All clean, Master!" Hops chirped, her long ears clapping together happily. "Mochi’s got the shadow-veils up on the lower perimeter, and Fen’s got the back alley blocked off. We can head straight to the penthouse."

"Excellent. Fall in, Bridget," Elara commanded, turning down the dark alleyway. "Keep your shield close. The Slums are not fond of Upper District steel."

Ten minutes later, the heavy, reinforced steel door of the penthouse clicked shut, and Bridget finally let out a long, shuddering breath. She set her massive tower shield down against the coat rack, the steel plate clanging loudly against the wood, and looked around.

The tension in her muscular shoulders immediately vanished, replaced by an absolute, jaw-dropping shock.

The penthouse didn't look like an assassin’s guild hall. It was a lavish, purple-tinted paradise smelling heavily of jasmine, freshly ground coffee, and expensive linen wax. But it wasn't the decor that made the Shield-Maiden freeze solid in the entryway.

It was the pack.

Because Elara’s girls spent their nights engaged in high-intensity "stamina training" and calibration exercises, the standard uniform around the penthouse was the absolute bare minimum.

Seline the viper-kin was coiled comfortably across the plush velvet sofa, her emerald-green tail draped elegantly over the cushions. Her human torso was completely bare save for a sheer, translucent silk wrap that did absolutely nothing to hide her radiant skin.

Lyra the ferret-kin was lounging upside down on a lounge chair, her long, slender ears twitching as her tail flipped lazily in the air. She was wearing nothing but a pair of tiny, lace-trimmed silk shorts from The Gilded Thread. Nearby, Mochi the cat-kin curled into a ball on a large floor pillow, her furry ears pinned back as she lazily groomed her forearm, clad in a delicate, completely crotchless lace g-string that she hadn't bothered to take off since the night before.

Fen, the massive wolf-kin, stood near the kitchen counter. Even the stoic vanguard was only wearing a loosely fastened linen shirt, completely unbuttoned down the front, revealing her toned, powerful midriff and a hint of the broad shoulders that carried Elara’s strength multiplier.

Bridget’s face turned a nuclear shade of red. She clutched her hands over her linen gambeson, her eyes darting from the snake scales to the furry ears, completely overwhelmed by the casual, thick wave of sensual tension radiating from the room.

"Master's home!" Lyra squeaked, flipping right-side up with hyperactive ferret energy, her slender tail vibrating as her eyes locked onto Bridget. "And she brought a giant human! Wow, look at those shoulders. Are we breaking her in tonight?"

"She is a professional vanguard," Elara announced deadpan, smoothly unbuttoning her high-collared maid shirt to reveal her pale, flawless shoulders. She stepped out of her pleated walking skirt, leaving her standing in her own delicate white lace crotchless g-string. "Bridget, please remove your armor plating, It's tracking Lower District dust onto the freshly waxed hardwood."

Bridget swallowed hard, her knees shaking slightly as she looked from Elara's pristine, unbothered expression to the five exotic beastkin who were now all slowly creeping toward the edge of the rug, their eyes wide with a sudden, deep-found hunger.

"I... I have a feeling," Bridget whispered, her voice cracking as she unlatched her heavy steel breastplate, "that my defensive stats are not going to help me here."

"Your defense stats are completely irrelevant," Elara murmured." The laundry doesn't care about it. As for them," Elara eyed the pack of hungry eyed beastkin," you’ll just have to wait and see, won't you."
