[ MATCH 1: SASUKE UCHIHA VS. YOROI AKADŌ ]

Hayate Gekkō coughed into a white handkerchief, raised one hand, and stepped back toward the perimeter wall. "First match... begin."

Ren rested his forearms on the cold iron railing, weight balanced across both heels. Beside him, Naruto had both fists wrapped around the bar, knuckles chalk-white, leaning out as far as he could without falling.Full novel: Konoha Wasn’t Supposed to Have a Shinigami — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"Get him, Sasuke! Kick his face in!"

"Breathe," Ren said, not looking over. "You're burning oxygen for someone else's fight."

"Easy for you to say." Naruto shot him a sideways look. "You're not watching your teammate walk out there looking half-dead."

"He's not half-dead."

"He looks half-dead."

"There's a difference."

Naruto made a sound between a groan and a growl. "He looks awful, Niisan." His voice dropped. "Look at his neck. That purple bruise from the forest—it's twitching."

Ren's charcoal-grey eyes narrowed slightly. His Sensory Clarity mapped the floor below.

Sasuke's chakra network was jagged, erratic—the cursed seal at the base of his neck radiating a cold, corrosive frequency, hijacking his tenketsu pathways every time his heart rate spiked. Across the pit, Yoroi Akadō advanced with both hands shrouded in dull blue. Chakra absorption.

"He can't use ninjutsu," Ren said quietly. "The moment his chakra spikes to mold a fire technique, the seal's feedback loop will paralyze his diaphragm."

Naruto's knuckles went a shade whiter.

"Then what's he supposed to do?"

"Remember what he learned before he ever touched a hand seal."

A step to his left, Kakashi's single visible eye curved upward. "Sharp eye, Ren-kun. Let's see if my student has the discipline to remember his fundamentals."

In the pit, Yoroi lunged. Sasuke dodged by inches, but Yoroi's palm grazed his shoulder, visibly sapping a pulse of blue. Sasuke stumbled, breathing ragged.

"Come on," Naruto whispered. Both fists pressed flat against the railing. "Come on, come on, don't you dare—"

"He's overthinking the evasion," Ren murmured, mostly to himself. "Linear retreat against an energy-drainer just gives them a straight vector. He needs rotational pivot."

Sasuke dropped his center of gravity. Instead of leaping back, he swept his rear heel in a low semi-circle, ducked beneath Yoroi's grasping hand, and drove an upward kick into Yoroi's chin.

The impact lifted Yoroi off the stone. Sasuke launched after him—airborne, limbs snapping into the dynamic sequence of Lee's taijutsu.

The Lion Combo.

His heel came down like an axe into Yoroi's sternum. The flagstones cracked. Yoroi went limp before the dust settled.

"Winner... cough... Sasuke Uchiha."

Naruto let out something between a cheer and a laugh, shaking the railing hard enough the iron hummed. "YEAH! THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!" He spun toward Ren, pointing with both fingers. "You said rotational pivot! He did the rotational pivot! Did you see that?!"

"I was watching," Ren said, a faint smile at the corner of his mouth.

"That was insane." Naruto turned back to the pit, cupped both hands around his mouth. "SASUKE, YOU BEAUTIFUL JERK, THAT WAS AWESOME!"

Behind them, Sakura exhaled shakily and pressed one hand to her sternum. Ren caught the sound without turning his head.

Kakashi dropped to the floor to escort Sasuke away for the sealing ritual, offering Ren a brief nod as he passed beneath the balcony.

On the far side of the walkway, Ino let out a long breath. "He actually pulled it off." A pause. "Barely, but still."

She glanced over at Ren, tapping a finger against her chin. "Hey. Solo kid."

Ren turned his head slightly. "Ren is fine, Yamanaka-san."

"You predicted Sasuke's pivot before he even shifted his weight," she said, blue eyes narrowing. "How? You don't have a dōjutsu."

"People telegraph mass before they move muscle. If a person wants to jump, their quadriceps load half a second before the knee bends. It's mechanics."

Ino stared at him. "You talk about fighting like it's a carpentry project."

"Good carpentry doesn't collapse under stress. Neither should a stance."

She opened her mouth, closed it, then let out a short breath through her nose. "That is either really smart or really annoying. I haven't decided which."

"Take your time," Ren said pleasantly.

She pointed at him. "See, that. That's the annoying part."

Across the balcony, Temari had her arms crossed over her iron fan, teal eyes tracking the exchange. She didn't say anything. Her gaze settled on Ren's posture—the complete absence of nervous adrenaline in a room where half the teenagers were trembling.

He's not posturing, she thought. He genuinely doesn't feel threatened.

…

The electric board whirred back to life.

Click-click-click-click-CLACK.

[ MATCH 4: REN (SOLO RESERVE) VS. MISUMI TSURUGI (OTOGAKURE) ]

A murmur crossed the balcony.

Naruto's head snapped sideways. "NIISAN!" He grabbed Ren's shoulder with both hands and gave him a single firm shake. "That's YOU! That's your name up there!"

"I can read," Ren said.

"Then go! Move!" Naruto was already half-pushing him toward the railing. "Show 'em what you got! Don't let that Sound guy weird you out—he's got a creepy face, just ignore the face—"

"Noted," Ren said, a soft chuckle escaping before he could contain it.

He uncrossed his arms, checked the small of his back where his dual tantō rested horizontally, and hopped lightly over the railing. He dropped twenty feet and landed on the arena floor without a sound, sandals absorbing the impact like a spring.

Behind him, Naruto leaned so far over the railing that Sakura physically grabbed the back of his jacket.

Misumi Tsurugi walked out from the opposite end.

Dark cloth mask, cold narrow eyes, grey combat tunic. He rolled his shoulders and an unnerving series of wet pops echoed through the hall as his cartilage shifted. His gaze swept Ren once, top to bottom—the look of a man who hadn't yet decided something was worth his attention.

"A solo reserve," Misumi rasped. "Konoha must really be running low on talent if they let a teamless orphan into the prelims."

Ren took his mark five paces away, hands loose at his sides. "It saves on administrative paperwork. Less forms to sign."

Something shifted in Misumi's eyes. Not anger—flatter, colder. "Keep joking, kid." He cracked his neck. "Once I wrap around your neck, you won't have the breath to tap out."

"I'll keep that in mind," Ren said, tone unchanged.

Misumi's eyes narrowed. He'd expected nerves, bravado, a flinch. A slight furrow formed between his brows before he smoothed it away.

Up on the center balcony, the Third Hokage leaned forward, resting his pipe against his chin. "Ah... the boy from the archives," Hiruzen murmured. "Let us see how his theory translates to the floor."

Beside him, Might Guy flashed a brilliant grin. "His drop from the balcony was exceptionally clean, Lord Hokage! Not a millimeter of wasted rebound! That is the posture of a youth who respects physical fundamentals!"

Hiruzen made a small sound, though he didn't look away from Ren.

Hayate stepped between them, sword resting against his hip.

"Fourth match... Ren versus Misumi Tsurugi." He coughed twice, then chopped his hand down. "Begin!"

Misumi moved instantly.

He didn't draw a kunai. His entire upper body seemed to liquefy—torso elongating, shoulders dislocating with an audible shluck. He shot forward, arms stretching like rubberized coils aimed straight for Ren's limbs.

Soft Physique Modification — Nan no Kaizō.

Ren didn't leap back. He stepped forward into the attack radius.

The intake of breath from the balcony was audible.

"Niisan, look OUT!" Naruto screamed.

Misumi's elongated right arm whipped around Ren's waist. His left coiled around Ren's left forearm and pinned it to his chest. The Sound ninja's face split into a grin beneath his mask, eyes lighting with the satisfaction of a man who knew exactly how this ended.

"Caught you." His body wound tight, preparing to snap. "Should've run when you had the chance. The more you struggle, the faster your bones—"

"I don't plan on struggling," Ren said.

Misumi stopped mid-sentence. His eyes dropped to Ren's face.

The boy wasn't gritting his teeth. He wasn't straining. His expression was entirely, disturbingly composed—grey eyes clear, breathing steady.

Something cold moved through Misumi's chest.

"What—"

Ren's right hand—completely free—flicked upward.

He didn't reach for a paper tag. His index and middle fingers glowed with a faint azure thread of pure spiritual energy. In 0.3 seconds, his fingertips traced three geometric strokes through the air against Misumi's wrapped forearm.

[Uzumaki Air-Scripting: Kinetic Anchor Array — Form 1]

Three radiant blue kanji hung suspended on Misumi's skin for a fraction of a second, then sank into his flesh and bone:

[ LOCK ]

BZZZZZZT.

Misumi's eyes went wide. The rubbery give of his muscle fibers hardened all at once, contracting from the inside out into rigid, unyielding stone. He tried to flex his arm. Nothing moved.

"What—" His voice cracked. "What did you do to my arm?! I can't—I can't retract—"

"Elasticity requires fluid cellular hydration and pliable tissue vectors," Ren said mildly. "The seal introduced an opposing kinetic lock. Right now, your cartilage has the flexibility of dry cedar."

"Get it off," Misumi snarled, something wild clawing into his voice. "Get it off me—"

Ren twisted his trapped left arm. Because Misumi's limbs were now frozen like rigid planks, the grapple shattered. He stepped free, unhurried, and moved into the pocket of Misumi's guard while the Sound nin was still staring at his own useless arm.

He placed his open right palm flat against the center of Misumi's solar plexus. A controlled, high-frequency Raiton vibration hummed through his palm for one-tenth of a second.

Thump.

A clean, localized shockwave through Misumi's diaphragm. His eyes rolled back. The frozen elongated arms went limp, and he collapsed forward onto the stone, unconscious before his forehead touched the gravel.

Clack.

Silence dropped over the arena.

Less than eleven seconds. No blood. No broken bones. No destroyed terrain. The faint glow of blue kanji was already fading from Misumi's skin.

Hayate stood frozen, hand half-raised. He pressed two fingers to Misumi's neck, confirmed the pulse, and straightened.

"Winner... cough... Ren."

…

Two full seconds of stunned silence held before Naruto detonated.

"YEAHHHH! DID YOU SEE THAT?! THAT'S MY NIISAN! THAT'S— SOMEONE WRITE THAT DOWN, WRITE THAT DOWN RIGHT NOW—"

"Nobody is writing anything down," Sakura said faintly, her hand flat over her heart.

Ino stood with both hands on the railing, mouth slightly open. She closed it. Opened it again. "He drew a seal in the air." Her brows pulled together. "Without paper? Without ink? He just—" She gestured vaguely at the air in front of her. "Drew it. On the man. While the man was crushing him."

"While he let the man crush him," Shikamaru said flatly.

Ino turned to look at him. His eyes were fully open—all traces of his usual heavy-lidded laziness gone. A bead of sweat ran down his temple.

"He let the guy grab him on purpose," Shikamaru muttered. "Because it gave him a stationary target for a point-blank anchor. The grapple was the trap." He exhaled slowly. "That guy is a monster in disguise."

Ino looked back down at the pit. "He's also being very gentle about it," she said, something she couldn't name in her voice.

Across the hall, Temari stared at the arena floor, fingers tightening around the edge of her iron fan. She'd watched the whole thing—not just the seal, but the stillness before it, and the complete absence of ceremony afterward. No showboating. Just two fingers and a palm.

A small smirk touched the corner of her lips, gone almost immediately.

"Clean," she murmured. "Very clean."

…

Down in the pit, Ren crouched beside Misumi. He tapped the boy's wrist with two fingers, releasing the kinetic seal so the frozen cartilage wouldn't suffer permanent strain, and adjusted his collar to keep the airway open.

"Take care of him," Ren told the approaching medical-nin. "He'll have a slight headache when the nerve shock fades, but no tissue damage. The seal on his arm is already dissolving—his mobility should return in about four minutes."

The two medics looked at Ren, exchanged a glance, then hurriedly bowed and loaded Misumi onto the stretcher.

Ren dusted off his trousers, turned toward the stairs, and began the walk back up to the balcony, his grey interface quietly flashing in the corner of his vision:

He smiled softly, tucking his hands into his vest pockets.

One step closer to the roof.
