The morning sun hung bright and merciless over the Chūnin Exam stadium.
Tens of thousands of spectators packed the stone tiers—Daimyō waving silk fans, merchant lords trading betting slips, foreign shinobi watching with predatory eyes. The air hummed with heat and roasted meat and nervous tension.
Naruto's match against Neji had already set the crowd on fire, ending with his roaring uppercut from beneath the shattered dirt. Neji lay motionless. Naruto stood panting, bloodied teeth, eyes scanning the balcony until he found Ren.
Ren gave him a single nod. Naruto beamed, whisker-scars widening.
Then came Match Two: Sasuke Uchiha versus Gaara of the Desert.
Ren watched Sasuke's descent from the railing. Crisp movements, light on the heels, the precise oscillation rhythm from the archives. When the Chidori punched through Gaara's sand shield and drew blood for the first time, something tore through the arena—a high, screeching shriek from deep within the broken sand.

Ren's collarbone flared cold.
He looked up.
White feathers drifted down from the rim of the stadium. Soft, luminous, falling through the blazing noon heat.
Nehan Shōja no Jutsu.
Around him, murmurs softened into sighs. Noblemen dropped wine cups. Civilians slumped forward in rows.
…
"What is... why am I so..." Ino's knees buckled at the Team 10 railing. Her fingers scrabbled against the iron. "Shika...maru..."
A hand caught her under the shoulder before her forehead hit the bar.
Ren crouched beside her, palm flat against the base of her neck. A sharp micro-pulse of Yin-chakra dissolved the genjutsu in 0.2 seconds.
Ino gasped upright, pale blue eyes flying open.
"It's an illusion." His grip didn't waver. "Ground yourself on the stone."
She grabbed the rail with both hands. Her eyes swept the rows of slumped spectators—merchants folded over benches, guards crumpled against pillars. A chill ran up her spine.
"Ren—" Below, the first distant boom rolled through the stone underfoot. Then another. "What's happening?"
"Invasion. Sound and Sand. They moved during the match."
She turned to stare at him. "How are you this calm right now?!"
"Because someone needs to be." His eyes had already moved past her, sweeping the concourse. "And panicking won't stop the snakes."
A colossal impact shook the western wall. Dust rained from the ceiling overhead.
Ino flinched hard. "Snakes?!"
Ren stepped over to Shikamaru, who lay with his cheek pressed against the stone floor, one arm tucked under his head, eyes shut. Ren tapped his ribs with a sandal. Once, then harder.
"Wake up. The match is canceled."
A long pause.
Shikamaru cracked one eye open. "...I was hoping to nap through the whole disaster."
"Take Ino and Chōji. Eastern evacuation shelters, beneath the Academy—underground access corridor behind the second classroom block. The lower concourse is going to flood. Keep them moving and keep them quiet."
Shikamaru sat up slowly, brushed dust from his cheek. When his eyes opened fully the laziness was gone. "...And you?"
"Rooftops."
A half-second, then a single grim nod. "Don't do anything too troublesome."
"No promises."
Ino had pulled Chōji upright by the sleeve. She looked back at Ren—at his steady hands, the absence of fear on his face.
"What about you?" Quieter this time.
A faint smile touched the corner of his mouth. Gone almost before it arrived. "I have work on the roofs. Don't take unnecessary risks, Ino. I'll see you when this is over."
She opened her mouth. Closed it. Gave a fierce, tight nod instead.
Ren placed one hand on the parapet, vaulted the rail, and disappeared into the smoke above the arena.
…
Three giant, three-headed snakes had battered through the outer western wall. Smoke plumed from four sectors of Konoha, cut through with exploding tags and steel.
Ren sprinted across the clay rooftops, feet barely whispering against the tiles.
Phantom Step. His movement blended with micro-bursts of chakra, leaving no spiritual wake.
In the street below, a squad of three Sound Chūnin had cornered a civilian family—a mother pressed against a collapsed bakery wall, two children buried against her sides.
The lead Sound ninja drew a serrated blade. "Konoha scum—"
A shadow dropped from the sky.
Ren landed between the mother and the attacker. His right arm snapped forward, the obsidian tantō clearing its sheath with a dry snick.
High-Frequency Raiton: Blade Oscillation.
A high-pitched hum. The vibrating blade met the Sound ninja's sword and kept moving—through the steel, across the man's breastplate, severing his central chakra coil. He collapsed, unconscious from the neural shockwave.
The other two recoiled. "A kid—?!"
Ren's left hand blurred, tracing two blue kanji into the air:

The kanji stamped onto the stone beneath their boots.

Their lower limbs froze. Ren closed the gap in one step and drove two open-palm strikes into their diaphragms.
Thump-thump.
Both folded forward.
Total elapsed time: 4.8 seconds.

Ren sheathed his blade. The mother was pressed flat against the bakery wall, both children against her, all three shaking. Her eyes moved from the bodies on the ground to the shinobi standing between them.
"Three blocks north," Ren said. "Leaf Chūnin have secured the shelters beneath the First Training Ground. Don't stop moving."
She stared at him. Then her face crumpled. She bowed, tears cutting down her cheeks, and ushered her children into the alleyway.
Ren watched them go for one breath.
Then he was back on the roofline.
A massive purple cube had erupted atop the administrative rooftop—fifty feet into the sky, blazing against the smoke.
The Four Violet Flames Barrier. Shishi Enjin.
The Harvester's brand on his neck flared beneath his collar, throbbing.

He adjusted the twin tantō at the small of his back.
"Hold on, Old Man," Ren said, and launched himself into the smoke.
