The roaring void of black Reishi lightning didn't spit Ren out so much as yield to him.

One moment his boots were leaving the dust of the Uzumaki Mask Shrine on Konoha's forgotten outskirts. The next, gravity flipped, spatial tearing stopped, and his sandals struck dry riverbed gravel in a single soundless crouch. He stood up.

The night air hit first. Cold and sharp — petroleum exhaust, ozone from high-voltage lines, damp river silt, and somewhere upstream, cheap instant ramen from a convenience store.Full novel: Konoha Wasn’t Supposed to Have a Shinigami — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Above him loomed the underbelly of a concrete overpass. Amber sodium lights painted the autumn mist in copper and rust. A commuter train hummed across an elevated rail bridge in the distance.

Modern Japan.

Ren closed his eyes and drew the air into his lungs. No fluid rattling. No stabbing spasm near the left ventricle. No cold drag of an oxygen cannula. Just air, filling a body vibrating with unsealed Uzumaki vitality.

Resting pulse: fifty-four.

A quiet smile touched the corners of his mouth.

Twenty years in a hospital bed. Eight months in mud and blood. And now this.

"Not a bad landing," he murmured. He glanced at his hands and turned them over once — no tremor, no IVs, no white knuckles on bed rails. He let out a slow breath.

A pale grey pane flickered across his vision in crisp violet-crimson script.

[ THE REAPER'S LEDGER ── SECTOR 1 ]

• Contract Armament: Twin Obsidian Tantō ── [Kagekiri: Bound]

The seal on his left collarbone pulsed once, warm rather than burning. His energy pathways didn't resist the new atmosphere — the contract translated his dense Yin-chakra reserves into the ambient spirit particles around him and clamped his external presence to absolute zero. To any spiritual sensor in the city, he was a stone on the riverbank.

Screeech—!

The spatial fabric five yards left tore like wet cardboard.

Rotting meat and sulfur rolled out of the fissure. A creature dropped through — nine feet long, quadrupedal, plated in chitinous bone-grey armor. Its face was a blank porcelain mask with hollow eye sockets and a jagged crimson-lipped maw. In the center of its chest: a vacant circular void.

[ THREAT APPRAISAL LOG ]

Target: Stray Hollow (Class: Low Beast)

Origin: Fractured Human Soul / Predatory Aggregation

The beast's head snapped toward him. It couldn't sense his spiritual pressure, but its instincts registered the radiant physical vitality of an unsealed Uzumaki vessel. A thick string of saliva hissed against the dry stones. It coiled its hind legs and lunged at eighty miles per hour, claws aimed for his throat.

Ren's heart rate didn't skip.

Straight linear trajectory. Heavy front-shoulder bias. Zero mid-air vector correction.

His right hand found the hilt of the obsidian tantō at the small of his back.

Phantom Step.

No crack of air, no chakra flare. He slipped through the blind spot beneath the creature's extended left foreleg like a shadow.

Zzzzt.

High-frequency lightning hummed along the twelve-inch blade.

As the Hollow flew overhead, Ren pivoted on his right foot and brought the vibrating edge up in a single horizontal arc. The blade cleaved through the mask and through the void in the chest. He slid the tantō back into its sheath with a soft clack.

The Hollow froze mid-air, carried four feet past where he'd stood.

Thin filaments of violet-crimson light erupted from the bisection line. The creature dissolved into golden-violet embers that swirled through the cool air and flowed into the seal at his collarbone.

Ren exhaled a quiet mist into the autumn chill. He glanced at the stones beneath his feet. Clean gravel. Undisturbed sediment. No scorch marks.

"Clean," he murmured. "Much cleaner than after Sound ninja."

Clack.

Wood on river stone. Deep in the shadows beneath the bridge pier.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

Unhurried. Deliberate.

Ren turned his head toward the darkness without shifting his weight, hands loose in his pockets.

A tall, lean man stepped out from under the bridge. Dark green jinbei over a black kimono. A green-and-white striped bucket hat tilted low, casting shadow over sharp grey-blue eyes. A wooden walking cane in his right hand. A small paper fan in his left.

He stopped at the edge of the darkness and tilted his head. Those eyes moved over Ren the way a loupe moves over an uncut stone.

A beat of silence.

Then a soft exhale through the nose.

"My, my." He stepped into the moonlight, cane tapping a last note against the stone. He flipped the fan open with a practiced snap and raised it to cover the lower half of his face. "That was quite the performance."

The fan tipped slightly. Grey-blue eyes moved from Ren's collar to the sheathed tantō and back up.

"No chant. No Zanpakutō release. No Quincy cross." A pause. "And not a single speck of spiritual residue on the riverbed."

His eyes settled on the fading ember trails near the water's edge.

"Curious." The theatrical warmth dropped half a degree. "I have catalogued exactly what every known spiritual operative looks like mid-engagement." The fan lowered a fraction. "You don't fit a single category."

He planted the cane in the gravel ten paces away and looked at Ren directly.

"Tell me, young traveler —" Kisuke Urahara's eyes gleamed in the moonlight. "...from which corner of the afterlife does a boy with living flesh, ancient sealing marks, and the blades of a shadow-assassin fall from the sky?"

Ren held his gaze. He let the question sit for half a second — not hesitation, just the consideration of someone choosing their first word carefully.

He gave a slight nod. Brief. Unhurried.

"Good evening, Shopkeeper." His voice was calm, carrying a quiet civil edge. "I appreciate the restraint. Most people who watch someone else's fight from the shadows don't announce themselves with a walking cane."

He glanced at the cane, then back up.

"Though I suspect it's mostly aesthetic."

A trace of dry humor at the corner of his mouth, gone quickly.

"As for where I fell from —" His gaze moved past Urahara for a moment, sweeping the overpass, the sodium glow, the rail bridge. Something crossed his expression and was gone. "Somewhere far enough that a quiet riverbed feels like a genuine luxury."

His eyes returned to Urahara's.

"I'm just a man who doesn't enjoy leaving messes." A pause. "But if you have a kettle on somewhere nearby, Urahara-san — I think we have business to settle. And I'd rather do it sitting down."
