The rain over Karakura Municipal Cemetery didn't fall in gentle mists. It came down in heavy, slate-grey sheets that drowned the cedar hillsides in the sound of rushing water.

Water drummed against the taut black fabric of Ren's umbrella. Standing twenty yards back in the tree line on a muddy earthen rise, he looked down at the terraced stone pathways of the graveyard.

He inhaled slowly. Cold air. Petrichor and wet stone.

A rainy day without lung spasms.

On Earth, a downpour like this would have meant an immediate spike in chest congestion, days confined beneath sterile hospital blankets. Here, he felt only the crisp chill against his cheeks and the unwavering, 54 bpm thrum of a heart that refused to falter.

Down below, at the base of the gravel stairs, stood the Kurosaki family.

Isshin Kurosaki, carrying an absurdly large promotional poster of his deceased wife, was playing his usual loud, buffoonish routine to keep his daughters smiling. Karin and Yuzu, dressed in dark yellow raincoats, carried small bouquets of white chrysanthemums, their chatter muffled by the rain.

And lagging twenty paces behind them, walking with his head bowed and fists clenched inside his pockets, was Ichigo.

Even from a distance, Ren's Sensory Clarity could read the turbulence in Ichigo's chest. The boy's spiritual pressure wasn't just leaking—it was churning in dark, jagged eddies.

June seventeenth. Ren watched the orange-haired boy stop at the bottom of the mossy stairs. The day Masaki Kurosaki died. The day a predator stole a mother to feed a fifty-year hunger.

Beneath the steady rhythm of falling water, a foul, rotten stench began to bleed through the wet soil.

Rancid fat burned in sulfur—the unmistakable miasma of a high-density Hollow that had gorged itself on human souls for half a century without ever facing judgment.

Ren didn't reach for his blades.

Instead he reached into his left pocket, drawing four square talismans made of spirit-alloy-infused parchment he'd traded from Urahara the night before.

"First," he murmured, stepping along the ridge with soundless Phantom Step, "we make sure the living aren't caught in the splash."

He flicked his wrists. Four talismans shot through the rain at four compass points around the cemetery plateau, embedding themselves into cedar trunks.

Ren formed a single hand seal with his left index and middle fingers.

Uzumaki Fūinjutsu: Muon Kekkai.

Four razor-thin violet filaments snapped between the trees, creating a two-hundred-meter dome of inverted acoustic and kinetic geometry. All spiritual pressure, structural shockwaves, and psychic screams generated within the perimeter sealed from the city below. To the civilians on the highway half a mile away, the hillside appeared as nothing more than a quiet, misty cemetery in an ordinary storm.

Down on the main path, Isshin Kurosaki stopped walking.

The goofy smile flickered for half a second. His dark eyes flicked toward the treeline where the barrier had snapped into place.

An acoustic-kinetic containment field...? Isshin thought, jaw tightening before he masked it with another boisterous laugh. No chant. No spiritual flare. Whoever is up on that ridge... they know exactly what they're doing.

Fifty yards up the hill, the mud gave way.

SPLASH—!

The ground exploded in a spray of black soil and shattered grave markers. From the earth rose a colossal, hunched monstrosity twenty-five feet tall, covered in shaggy grey-brown fur, with massive hooked claws and the face of an armored, predatory ape.

Dangling from a thick, fleshy stalk extending from the top of its skull was the bait.

A pale, porcelain-like human figure with flowing chestnut hair, dressed in a white summer dress, swaying limply in the rain—an exact, horrific replica of Masaki Kurosaki.

"Ichigo..." the lure's mouth moved, producing a hollow mockery of a warm motherly voice. "Ichigo... why didn't you save me...?"

Ichigo's breath caught. His pupils shrank to pinpricks.

He didn't move for a full second. Just stood there in the rain, lips parted, staring up at the face that wore his mother's features like a stolen mask.

"You..." His voice came out barely above a whisper, a broken sound that had lived at the bottom of his chest for six years. Then his jaw locked. His knuckles turned white around the hilt of his Zanpakutō. "You... were the one from that day—!"

"Gyahahaha!" The beast rumbled, red eyes glowing. "Ah, the brat from six years ago! Look how big your soul has grown!" Grand Fisher's massive head tilted, unhurried, arrogantly certain. "Your mother's soul tasted so sweet... let's see if yours is just as tender!"

Something in Ichigo's expression shattered.

"Shut your mouth—!"

With a roar, Ichigo launched himself up the terraced slope, black Shinigami robes whipping in the storm as he swung his giant cleaver in a desperate, frenzied downstroke.

Up on the ridge, Ren watched with quiet, measured eyes.

His form is completely broken. Every swing, every stumble in the footwork. All upper body. No base. His entire torso is open with every strike. A brief pause. He's not fighting. He's bleeding out six years of silence with a sword in his hand.

He needs to face this pain... but he shouldn't die for it.

Grand Fisher parried Ichigo's massive blade with the hardened chitin of his left forearm, laughing as he drove his right claws into Ichigo's shoulder, pinning the boy into the mud and tearing deep crimson gashes across his chest.

Rukia Kuchiki sprinted up the stairs, drawing a Kidō seal, but Grand Fisher's lure whipped through the air and knocked her back against a stone lantern with a sharp crack.

"Rukia—!" Ichigo choked out, twisting toward her, and the distraction cost him.

"Die, brat!" Grand Fisher snarled, raising his massive spiked fist. "Just like your mother died—!"

"—Don't."

Not a shout. Not a cry. A single low syllable carrying six years of weight. Teeth clenched, eyes burning, Ichigo spat blood into the mud and gripped his Zanpakutō with slick, trembling fingers, using every last shred of leverage left in his broken posture to drive the tip of his blade upward—and bury three feet of steel directly through Grand Fisher's chest.

ROAAARGH—!

Grand Fisher shrieked as blue-white spiritual flames burst from the wound. The beast staggered back, clutching its chest, arrogance collapsing into cowardly panic. Those glowing red eyes darted in frantic calculation.

"Curse you, brat! Curse you!"

Grand Fisher raised its massive right claw and dragged its talons downward across the fabric of space.

Rrrriiiip—!

A jagged black fissure tore open behind the Hollow—a Garganta leading into Hueco Mundo's white desert. Grand Fisher began hauling its bleeding bulk toward the rift.

"He's escaping—!" Rukia cried, struggling to stand, one hand pressed against the stone lantern. "Ichigo, stop him!"

Ichigo tried to push himself up. His arms buckled. Blood loss pressed him back down to his knees. His sword slipped from his numb fingers. He watched the murderer of his mother drag itself toward the dark void, and something behind his eyes went hollow and quiet.

"Damn it..." Rain and tears ran together down his cheeks. "Damn it... not again... not again—!"

His fist hit the mud.

From the high ridge, a calm, low voice cut through the rain:

"Fifty-four years of stolen souls..."

A beat.

"...and you thought you could just close the door?"

Zzzzt.

The air above the open Garganta distorted.

Phantom Step.

Ren appeared directly in the upper aperture of the spatial rift, suspended mid-air between the living world and Hueco Mundo. His dark coat whipped violently in the dimensional draft. In his right hand, the obsidian blade of Kagekiri blazed with high-frequency Raiton oscillation, humming at twenty million vibrations per second.

Grand Fisher's eyes bulged. Its massive frame went rigid, staring up at the seventeen-year-old boy floating above its head.

"W-Who are you—?!"

Ren looked down at it.

No rage. No performance. His dark eyes were simply steady—the absolute, unhurried certainty of someone who had already made their decision long before this moment.

"Someone who keeps the ledger," Ren said quietly.

His left hand formed a half-seal. His right arm extended in a single, perfectly calculated diagonal slice.

Uzumaki Blade Art: Linear Severance.

SHIIII-CLANK—!

The vibrating obsidian blade sliced straight through the spiritual harmonic cords binding Grand Fisher's soul-matrix together.

With a spray of black miasma, Grand Fisher's entire right shoulder—along with the massive arm holding the Garganta open—was cleanly severed from its torso.

"GYAAAAAAAHHHH—!"

The shriek shook the hillside as the severed limb tumbled into the mud below.

Ren landed lightly on the wet grass. He glanced at the blade, flicked a single droplet of dark spiritual residue from the obsidian edge, and slid it smoothly back into the horizontal sheath along the small of his back.

Clack.

Inside the severed stump, thousands of glowing crimson runes—an ancient Uzumaki necrosis seal—etched themselves into the wound, cauterizing the spiritual pathways and permanently shutting down its High-Speed Regeneration.

The mutilated beast fell howling into the dark void as the Garganta snapped shut behind it.

Silence returned to the cemetery.

The rain continued to fall, washing the black spiritual fluids into the grass.

Above the severed arm lying in the mud, a massive swirling cloud of golden-violet soul particles erupted into the air, drawn in a radiant spiral toward Ren's left collarbone. The Harvester brand flared with deep warmth as the stolen souls of fifty-four years found peace within the ledger.

Ten yards away, Ichigo knelt in the mud.

He was still staring at the space where the Garganta had been. Then his gaze dropped to the severed monster limb half-submerged in the mud. Then, slowly, it traveled up to the dark-haired boy standing calmly in the rain.

Ren's coat was still dripping.

"Ren...?" Ichigo whispered. His voice cracked somewhere in the middle of the name. "You... you were here the whole time...?"

Ren held his gaze a moment without answering. He walked over through the mud, stooped to pick up his fallen black umbrella from the grass, opened it with a soft snap, then closed the remaining distance and held it over Ichigo's head—shielding the wounded boy from the downpour as naturally as drawing breath.

Ichigo blinked up at the umbrella. Then at Ren's face.

Ren reached into his coat and pulled out a clean, dry hand towel, setting it across Ichigo's bloody lap.

Neither of them spoke. The rain fell steadily against the umbrella's fabric.

"You fought well, Ichigo-kun," Ren said at last. Quiet and steady. "He won't be hurting anyone ever again."

Ichigo's jaw worked. He looked down at the white towel in his lap.

"I couldn't—" He stopped. His voice had gone rough. "I almost let him get away. Again. Six years and I still couldn't—"

"You drove your blade through him while you were bleeding out in the mud," Ren said. Simply. Without decoration. "That's not nothing."

Ichigo didn't answer. His hands curled around the towel.

"Take care of your sisters," Ren added, quieter. "They're waiting for you at the bottom of the hill."

Ichigo looked down the slope. Through the rain, two small yellow raincoats were visible near the bottom of the gravel stairs—Karin's arms crossed, Yuzu's hands pressed together anxiously.

Sitting in the rain, shielded by the umbrella, Ichigo Kurosaki bowed his head into his bloody hands and let out a long, ragged sob.

Ren stood beside him, holding the umbrella steady against the storm, not speaking, not moving, until the tears finally stopped.

…

Thirty minutes later, the rain began to ease over the rooftops of Karakura Town.

Ren walked down the paved river road, hands tucked into his jacket pockets, enjoying the cool breeze coming off the water.

His brand hummed with 1,850 units of purified essence. His pulse was steady, his lungs were clear, and the smell of dinner drifted from a nearby ramen shop.

"Eighteen point five percent," he murmured, looking toward the western horizon where the first stars were appearing through the parting clouds. "One step at a time."
