Near the doorway, Team 10 had just entered to turn in their morning logs.
Asuma Sarutobi was lighting a cigarette near the door frame. Shikamaru yawned loudly behind him, spine curved, hands loose behind his head. Choji walked beside him working through a bag of barbecue chips.
Ino paused.
Her blue eyes swept the room the way they always did — taking inventory. Naruto was telling Ren about the cat's "evil eye technique" with his arms spread wide. The other Genin nearby were either posturing or pouting. Sasuke was doing the thing where he stood slightly apart, arms crossed.
And then there was the one at Window 4.
Older — fifteen, maybe sixteen. Lean through the shoulders, dark messy hair, grey eyes that were steady in a way most people's weren't. He wasn't performing anything. He spoke to Naruto like Naruto was worth listening to, and somehow that alone made Naruto stand two inches taller. He had said six words to Sasuke Uchiha and gotten a reaction — not much of one, but a reaction, which was more than most people managed in a year.
Ino tilted her head.
"Hey." She kept her voice low, angling toward Shikamaru. "Who's the dark-haired guy at Window Four?"
Shikamaru cracked one eye open a fraction wider. "Hm? Oh." He exhaled through his nose. "That's Ren. Reserve Genin from the logistics pool. Solo track. Took a poison hit near the border about two weeks ago, survived, and now he just runs maintenance jobs by himself." A pause. "Files everything on time. Writes his own supplemental reports."
Ino glanced sidelong at him. "That bothers you."
"It's exhausting to think about," Shikamaru said.
"He doesn't look like an ordinary Genin." She watched as Ren reached into his pocket without breaking conversation, produced a small wrapped honey candy, and held it out toward Naruto. Naruto caught it with both hands and a noise that could only be described as triumphant. "His posture's too clean. And he's not trying to impress anyone."
"Yeah, well." Shikamaru let his eyes close again. "Some people are just like that. Troublesome in a quiet way."
"That's not what troublesome means, Shikamaru."
"Can we turn in the weed-pulling log? I want to find a cloud."
Ino didn't answer. She watched for another few seconds — long enough to see Ren tuck the handkerchief back into his vest, say something that made Naruto grin wide enough to be structurally unsound, then turn back toward the counter without a trace of self-consciousness.
She filed it away and said nothing else.
Back at the counter, Kakashi had finally closed his book with a soft snap. He slid it into his vest and his single visible eye curved into a pleasant crescent as his gaze settled on Ren.
"You're Iruka's promising student from the archive," Kakashi noted, casual, the way an observation becomes a question without technically asking one. "He mentioned someone was making remarkable progress with basic sealing theory."
Ren inclined his head. "Kakashi-senpai. Iruka-sensei is generous with his praise. I just read the blueprints."
"Mm." Kakashi tilted his head a fraction. "And reinforced municipal grain wards. And completed twenty-three solo missions in twelve days. And apparently managed to get Sasuke Uchiha to listen to posture advice, which I've been trying to do since Tuesday." A small pause. "Just by reading blueprints."
There was a flicker of something in Ren's expression — brief, carefully neutral. "Iruka-sensei has good blueprints."
Kakashi studied him for one quiet moment, then made a small, considering sound. "Modest," he murmured. "That's a rare trait in this building."
"Alright, clear out — Team Seven, you're backing up the line," Kotetsu called, waving a hand at the growing cluster. "The rest of us have work to do."
Naruto groaned like a man handed a death sentence. He turned back to Ren, and for a second the bright, noisy energy dropped just slightly. "You'll be at the training grounds later, right, Niisan?"
"Maybe." Ren gave him a single clap on the shoulder — firm. "Go get dry clothes and eat something warm first. You're not training anything useful if you're cold and miserable."
Naruto's mouth curved, crooked. "Yeah, yeah." He pointed at Ren with full conviction. "Don't forget our spar!"
"I won't forget," Ren said. Naruto beamed — properly beamed, the kind that reached his eyes — and then Sakura had him by the collar, hauling him bodily toward the exit.
Sasuke lingered a moment longer. He didn't say anything. He just looked at Ren — a brief, even look — then turned and followed his team out, one hand in his pocket, his posture fractionally more careful on the left side than it had been when he walked in.
Once the room settled back into its standard hum, Kotetsu let out a long breath through his nose. "Anyway." He reached into a locked wooden drawer under the desk. "Since you're here, and your record is spotless, and you apparently perform minor miracles on municipal infrastructure in your spare time—" He pulled out a sealed scroll with a blue C-rank ribbon and set it on the counter with a quiet click. "—we have something that might suit you."
Ren looked at the scroll.
"Solo C-rank?" he asked.
"Escort and route verification," Izumo said, leaning forward and tapping the wax seal. "A medicinal merchant caravan from Tanzaku Quarters is moving a batch of rare chakra-conductive herbs along the northeastern trade border. They specifically requested a discreet escort — no loud four-man squads drawing bandit attention. Just a quiet, competent scout to check the road ahead and handle perimeter wards."
He met Ren's eyes. "Pays forty-five thousand ryo. It's slightly outside the village perimeter, but given your sealing background and clean record, the mission desk is authorized to clear you for solo C-rank deployment."
A brief pause.
"You interested?"
The grey interface in Ren's vision shimmered with a soft, pulsing chime:
[ ACTIVE MISSION CONTRACT DETECTED ]
Objective: Tanzaku Medicinal Escort (C-Rank Solo)
Target Zone: Kusagakure Borderline Outskirts
Expected Threat: Rogue Skirmishers / Spatial Inconsistencies
[ HARVEST POTENTIAL ]
• Unsealed Artifact Presence: HIGH (Residual Uzushio Geometry Detected)
• Estimated Ledger Progress: [ 15.0% ──► 35.0% ]
Ren looked up from the prompt. "I'll take it."
He reached across the counter and picked up the scroll. "Departure time?"
"Caravan leaves the North Gate at thirteen hundred hours," Kotetsu said, pressing the authorization stamp down with a firm click. He glanced up briefly. "Keep your eyes open out there, kid. Tanzaku border can get messy."
"It tends to," Ren agreed. He tucked the mission scroll into his vest and gave both Chūnin a quiet nod. "Have a calm afternoon, gentlemen."
"If only," Kotetsu muttered, already reaching for the next stack of requisition forms.
"He won't even use the side exit," Izumo said, watching Ren walk toward the main doors.
Kotetsu didn't look up. "Nope."
A small pause.
"...Good kid."
"Yeah," Izumo agreed, and stamped the next form.
Stepping out onto the sunlit balcony, Ren felt the warm breeze move against his skin. Below him, the village spread out in its familiar layered noise — vendors calling out prices, the clatter of training grounds, the distant thwack of wooden practice weapons. He touched the twin obsidian tantō resting against the small of his back.
A border run. Ancient architecture waiting in the ground.
A small smile touched the corner of his mouth.
Let's see what else they left behind.
