The first trip was supposed to last four days.

It lasted nine.

The second lasted two weeks.Full novel: Lady of the Mysteries — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The third lasted almost a month.

By the end of the first year, Seraphina had stopped telling people that she was “traveling.”

She was investigating.

There was a difference.

She visited museums.

Old temples.

Archaeological sites.

Private collections.

Libraries.

Small villages that appeared in obscure historical records.

She met scholars who knew far more than she did.

She also met people who knew absolutely nothing but were very confident about everything.

One man sold her a supposedly ancient manuscript.

It was fake.

She discovered this three days later.

Another woman claimed that her grandfather had belonged to a secret religious order.

After six hours of conversation, Seraphina discovered that the “secret order” had been a local meditation club.

She lost money.

She lost time.

She occasionally lost patience.

But she also found things.

Not answers.

Pieces.

A damaged manuscript describing a ritual nobody understood.

A photograph of an object that had disappeared from a museum collection.

A centuries-old account of a man who supposedly survived a fall that should have killed him.

A village where several families refused to speak about a particular cave.

A historian who quietly told her:

“Some records are better left unread.”

Seraphina asked him why.

He wouldn’t answer.

She respected that more than she respected most explanations.

She continued.

By eighteen, she had filled several encrypted archives.

Thousands of photographs.

Hundreds of documents.

Notes in several languages.

Names.

Locations.

Dates.

Rumors.

Dead ends.

And a growing collection of questions.

But there was one thing she hadn’t found.

A person.

Someone who could demonstrate that at least some of these stories were real.

Not a magician.

Not a fraud.

Not a person using advanced technology.

Something else.

Something she couldn’t explain.

Sometimes, late at night, she wondered whether she had wasted two years of her life.

Perhaps humanity had simply spent thousands of years inventing supernatural stories because people hated uncertainty.

Perhaps she had become obsessed with patterns that weren’t there.

That possibility bothered her.

Because Seraphina didn’t want to believe.

She wanted to know.

On the morning of her eighteenth birthday, she opened the oldest folder on her computer.

The title was simple.

UNEXPLAINED.

She looked through the files.

Then closed the folder.

Two years.

Nothing definitive.

She almost laughed.

“Maybe that’s the answer.”

She shut down the computer.

Then she noticed something.

A photograph she had taken months earlier.

She didn’t remember saving it.

She opened it.

An old market.

Dozens of people.

Nothing unusual.

Except one person standing near the edge of the photograph.

A man.

His face was turned away.

Seraphina zoomed in.

There was something around his wrist.

A dark mark.

She had seen it before.

Not on him.

In an archaeological photograph from another country.

Her expression changed.

She opened the older photograph.

Same structure.

Same symbol.

Not identical.

But close enough.

Seraphina stared at both images.

Then quietly said:

“Okay.”

She grabbed her jacket.

“Let’s try again.”
