"Great job, boys."

Several players nodded. Someone near the far end of the changing room clapped twice before reaching for his bottle.

The coach allowed them a few moments to drink and recover. Rafael remained on the bench with his elbows resting on his thighs. His shirt clung to his back, and each breath still scraped lightly against his throat.Full novel: Legacy N09 — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Yanis sat beside him, wearing the satisfied expression of someone who believed Rafael’s second goal belonged partly to him.

The coach waited until the room had quietened.

"Now forget the score."

A few heads lifted.

"They are two goals behind. They have nothing left to protect, so they will come higher and take more risks. Their midfield will push forward, and their full-backs will join earlier."

He moved several magnets across the tactical board.

"We do not spend the second half standing around our penalty area. Stay compact, protect the middle and make them go outside. When we win the ball, the first pass has to take us away from pressure. Do not clear it straight back to them unless there is no other option."

His finger moved toward the magnet at the top of Metz’s formation.

"Morales, those centre-backs will be tighter after your two goals. Don’t waste the half wrestling with them. Move across the line and give us somewhere to play when we recover the ball."

Rafael nodded.

"When the ball goes wide, get back into the box," the coach continued. "They’ve already lost you twice. Make them keep looking for you."

"All right."

The coach turned toward the midfielders and began explaining how their distances needed to change when the opposition advanced another player.

Yanis leaned closer.

"Two goals," he said quietly. "You’ve been hiding something."

Rafael kept his eyes on the tactical board. "You finally passed the ball properly."

"One pass."

"That was all I needed."

Yanis shook his head, although Rafael caught the beginning of a smile before he looked away.

The coach finished his instructions, and the players stood.

When they returned to the pitch, the visitors already had one substitute waiting beside the halfway line. Their first-half left winger had remained in the changing room. The replacement was smaller, with quick feet during his final warm-up steps and enough impatience to bounce twice on his toes while the referee checked the substitution.

Metz gathered in their half.

The visitors had changed more than one player.

One of their midfielders now stood several metres closer to the striker, while both full-backs had moved higher before the ball had even been put back into play.

The referee checked his watch.

Rafael took his position near the halfway line.

The whistle sounded.

The visitors immediately played backward and pushed forward around the ball.

Their striker closed Metz’s right centre-back while the advanced midfielder moved across to block the easiest pass into midfield. Both wingers remained high enough to prevent the Metz full-backs from stepping forward comfortably.

The centre-back returned the ball to the goalkeeper.

The goalkeeper moved it left, but the opposition striker changed direction and continued pressing. Metz’s left centre-back received with no time to carry forward and sent a hurried pass toward the touchline.

The full-back controlled it under pressure and knocked it down the line.

The ball went out before Metz’s winger could reach it.

The visiting bench applauded the pressure.

Rafael moved across the halfway line as the throw-in was taken. He resisted the urge to drop toward his own penalty area. Metz already had defenders and midfielders trying to move the ball through the first press. Adding himself to the same space would only remove their forward option.

The visitors recovered possession and attacked again.

Their new winger received near the touchline, shifted the ball onto his right foot and accelerated at the full-back. His first cross struck the defender’s leg and went out for a throw.

The next attack ended with a shot from outside the penalty area that travelled directly into the goalkeeper’s hands.

Metz had barely left their own half since the restart.

Rafael continued moving between the centre-backs. Whenever one stepped toward him, he drifted closer to the other. He checked behind himself before each possible clearance, looking for Yanis and the nearest midfielder.

In the forty-ninth minute, Metz finally found him.

Their centre-back stepped in front of the opposition striker and won a loose pass. With the advanced midfielder closing, he lifted the ball toward Rafael rather than attempting to play through the pressure.

Rafael watched it travel and checked over his right shoulder.

One centre-back approached directly behind him. The other had moved several metres deeper to protect the space toward goal.

Rafael widened his stance and allowed the defender’s first contact to press against his back. He did not attempt to turn.

The ball dropped against his chest.

He cushioned it downward, absorbed another shove and touched it sideways into Yanis’s path before the second defender could arrive.

Yanis collected the ball while already moving.

He carried it beyond the halfway line, forcing the opposition midfield to turn and run toward its own goal. Rafael followed through the centre while Metz’s midfielders advanced behind them.

The move slowed when Yanis reached the final third. The full-back recovered his position, and the nearest midfielder moved across to help him. Yanis returned the ball rather than forcing a dribble between them.

Metz kept possession for several passes before losing it near the opposite touchline.

They had not created a shot, but their defensive line had moved away from its penalty area and their midfield had recovered its shape.

As Rafael jogged back into position, the coach clapped from the technical area.

"That’s better! Give us the first pass!"

The visitors continued pressing, although the space behind their midfield was beginning to grow.

Their new winger offered a different problem.

In the fifty-fifth minute, the visitors circulated possession from right to left. The ball travelled over Metz’s midfield and reached the substitute near the touchline.

He controlled it before the full-back could close him.

The winger pushed the ball forward, slowed as the defender set his feet and then knocked it outside him with a sudden change of pace. The Metz full-back recovered quickly enough to prevent him from entering the penalty area, but not quickly enough to stop the cross.

The ball lifted toward the centre of the box.

Metz’s nearest centre-back reached it first and headed behind.

The visitors’ defenders ran forward for the corner. Rafael returned to the edge of the penalty area and took his position near the player waiting for a possible clearance.

The delivery curled toward the near post.

A Metz defender rose above everyone and headed it away, but the ball did not travel far enough to end the attack. An opposition midfielder collected it outside the area and shifted it away from an approaching challenge.

Metz’s defensive line began stepping out.

The midfielder looked up and returned the ball toward the far post.

Their striker had remained behind the first movement of defenders. He reached the dropping ball before the recovering centre-back and redirected it toward goal from close range.

The goalkeeper turned, but the finish had already passed him.

The ball struck the net.

The visiting striker ran inside the goal, grabbed it and carried it toward the halfway line. His teammates followed, shouting at one another to return to their positions.

The visiting bench had become louder. Several spectators behind the barrier applauded, while the Metz goalkeeper pointed toward the far side and demanded to know who had followed the striker.

No one answered before the referee called the teams back.

Rafael walked to the centre circle.

Metz still led, but the comfort surrounding the score had disappeared. Several teammates returned slowly, looking toward the coach or speaking over one another about the second ball.

Rafael placed the ball on the centre spot.

Yanis arrived on the right side of the circle and exhaled through his mouth.

"Next one," Rafael said.

Yanis looked at him and nodded.

The referee blew his whistle.

Rafael returned the ball to midfield, then moved between the centre-backs again.

Metz’s first pass after the restart was rushed toward the left wing and intercepted. The visitors attacked immediately, but their attempted through ball travelled too close to the goalkeeper.

The second recovery brought the same problem. A Metz midfielder won possession and tried to release Yanis before the winger had space to turn. The opposing full-back stepped in front of him and returned the ball into midfield.

"Keep it!" the coach shouted. "We don’t need to force everything!"

The next time Metz regained possession, they used three passes instead of one. The ball travelled from the centre-back into midfield and then toward Rafael on the right side of the centre circle.

The nearest defender followed him tightly.

Rafael checked over his shoulder before the pass arrived. He placed himself between the defender and the ball, controlled it with his right foot and laid it back toward Yanis.

As soon as the pass left him, Rafael moved toward the centre.
