Chapter 15: Frost Step

Legendary Tamer's Ascension: I Can Tame All Things

The Realm welcomed him back with its familiar dawn colored light, and William found the fox already exploring the field’s edges, favoring its injured leg but moving with far more confidence than it had shown curled into that crevice hours earlier. Cerberus lay nearby, watching the smaller creature’s cautious circuit of its new home with the patient indifference of something that had long since stopped worrying about territory.

"Let’s see what you brought with you," William murmured, settling into the grass and turning his attention inward toward the new inheritance still waiting, unexamined, at the edge of his awareness.

[Skill Inherited: Frost Step]

Grade: Uncommon

Grants brief, controlled bursts of cold aligned speed for near instantaneous repositioning across short distances. Frost gathered underfoot grants stable footing on any surface for the burst’s duration, water, sheer inclines, loose sand, broken ground, all treated as solid. Leaves a thin residue that briefly slows hostile creatures crossing it afterward. Cost scales with distance rather than duration. Draws from mana, not vitality.

William read it over twice, catching the detail that mattered most. ’Stable footing on anything. Water included.’ He glanced toward Frost, currently picking its way along the edge of a shallow stream cutting through the field. "Show me."

The fox seemed to understand, or perhaps simply felt the curiosity through the bond, and trotted straight out onto the stream’s surface without hesitation. Frost lit beneath each paw the instant it touched water, a fine lattice of ice spreading no wider than the print itself before dissolving a heartbeat later, the fox crossing as easily as if the water were solid ground.

’That’s not just an escape skill.’ William watched it circle back a second time, tail flicking with something like satisfaction. ’That’s a way past every obstacle a normal scout would have to go around. Rivers, cliffs, loose scree, none of it slows this down.’

He called the fox over with a soft whistle, uncertain if the sound meant anything to it yet, and was surprised when its ears perked immediately, trotting over with a limp already noticeably improved since entering the Realm.

[Realm Effect: Accelerated recovery applied]

"Better already," William said, running a careful hand along its injured foreleg, relieved to find the swelling reduced from what it had been in the cave. The fox tolerated the examination with a stillness that felt like trust rather than mere resignation, silver fur catching the Realm’s soft light in a way that made it look faintly luminous up close.

Small. The impression came through the bond, fainter and less developed than the connection he shared with Cerberus, but present nonetheless, a young, wary mind slowly settling into the safety of its new circumstances. Warm. Safe here.

"You’re safe," William confirmed quietly. "I’m not going to force anything out of you. Whatever pace this needs, we’ll take it."

He spent a while simply sitting with the fox in the quiet field, letting the bond deepen naturally rather than pushing for anything more than its comfort allowed, and gradually its posture eased further, tail curling loosely rather than tucked defensively against its body. By the time William rose to leave the Realm, the fox had pressed itself against his leg the same unguarded way Cerberus sometimes did, small and warm and entirely unlike the wary, cornered creature he’d found hiding in that crevice.

[Loyalty: Building (34%)]

’Not devoted yet. But building.’ William smiled slightly at the readout, a far gentler number than Cerberus’s hard won 78%, earned through desperation and near death rather than patience. ’This one I get to build properly, from the start, without anyone almost dying first.’

Over the following days, the fox, which William eventually settled on calling Frost after the skill it had brought with it, proved its worth in ways that had nothing to do with combat. Its small size and Uncommon grade senses made it an ideal scout, slipping ahead through Tower corridors and dungeon passages to sniff out monster signatures long before William’s own aura sense could register them clearly, and Frost Step let it cover ground no ordinary scout could, across streams, up sheer inclines, over loose scree, all of it treated the same by frost gathering beneath its paws.

"Anything ahead?" William asked, standing at the mouth of a narrow cave passage on their second minor Tower excursion that week, Frost already several strides ahead of him and Cerberus’s puppy sized form trotting close at his heel.

The impression that came back was simple, wordless, but increasingly detailed as the bond matured. Two. Small. Sleeping. Left path.

"Sleeping’s good. Means we can avoid them if we want to save the fight for something worth the effort." William adjusted course accordingly, grateful for information he wouldn’t have had without a scout small enough, quiet enough, and now nimble enough to slip past notice entirely.

It became a familiar rhythm over the following week, Frost ranging ahead through low floor Towers while Cerberus held back as backup muscle, William himself testing Doppelganger and Hellfire in increasingly controlled increments against whatever prey Frost’s scouting turned up. Each excursion sharpened all three of their capabilities in small, steady increments, William’s stamina pool stretching to accommodate longer Doppelganger splits, his control over Hellfire’s drain growing more precise, and Frost’s loyalty climbing steadily upward with every successful outing.

[Loyalty: Building (58%)]

By the end of the week, Frost no longer needed to be called by name to fall into step beside him, anticipating the rhythm of their small excursions with an eagerness that reminded William, distantly, of how thoroughly his life had reshaped itself in the space of a handful of days. A month ago he’d been the least respected member of a party that barely tolerated his presence. Now he had a Guardian Class monster resting easy in a private dimension, a scout fox growing more devoted by the day, and a slowly sharpening set of skills that no longer felt like borrowed power he barely understood.

’One slot left in the Realm.’ William watched Frost dart ahead through another quiet cave passage, silver fur catching the phosphorescent glow of fungus lining the walls. ’Whatever fills it, I want it to matter as much as these two already do.’

Behind him, Cerberus’s low, rumbling presence a constant, steady reassurance, and ahead of him, Frost’s quick, careful scouting clearing every uncertain path before he had to walk it blind, William pressed deeper into Ashvale’s quieter Towers, one careful step at a time, building something the world outside still had no idea existed.
