The question still hung between them while the chat window continued moving beside the stream preview.

Layla, however, still seemed to have questions.

SHE'S STILL ON THE PUSH-UPS 😭😭😭

LAYLA IS ASKING THE REAL QUESTIONS

SHE NEEDS THE LORE TO BE CONSISTENT

layla please it's a hypothetical

Zoey immediately curled sideways in her chair, pulling one knee toward her chest before burying her face in both hands. Her oversized hoodie folded around her as she compressed herself into the seat, trying to make herself physically smaller and escape any further discussion of the structural requirements of supernatural exercise with very little success.

"WHY DO YOU NEED THEM TO BE MECHANICALLY ACCURATE??"

She surfaced from behind her hands and sat up, both arms joining the argument almost immediately.

"You think I care about ghost form!? They're dead! Let them rep in peace!"

CHAT:

LET THEM REP IN PEACE 😭

this stream has completely derailed

Zo arguing for haunted gym rights

this is an academic debate now

Layla didn't respond. She remained seated beside Zoey while the messages continued climbing across the monitor, her expression unchanged by Zoey's increasingly animated defense.

"How much does the ghost haunt you? Does he just hang around, or does he bother you even in the bathroom?"

The question came with the same practical seriousness Layla as the begining.

CHAT:

LAYLA SAID TERMS AND CONDITIONS APPLY 💀

SHE'S NEGOTIATING THE TERMS I CAN’T BREATHE

she’s drafting a contract with the ghost rn

if the ghost haunts the toilet it’s over I’m out

Zoey slowly turned her head toward Layla.

"Why... why is your first concern whether or not the ghost follows you into the bathroom?"

Layla waited.

That gave Zoey enough time to hear her own question, consider the problem and immediately lose confidence in her objection.

"Okay, no, yeah. That's fair. Honestly that would be a dealbreaker. Haunted mirror I can handle. Toilet ghost? No thanks."

CHAT:

LAYLA IS NEGOTIATING WITH THE UNDEAD

TOILET GHOST 😭

Layla's hands remained folded in her lap.

"Will he pay half the rent if he stays?"

CHAT:

LANDLORD LAYLA ARC

she’s unionizing the afterlife

Whatever remained of Zoey's original romantic vision was rapidly becoming an administrative problem.

Zoey sat upright again suddenly, both hands flying open toward Layla.

"LAYLA. HE’S DEAD. HE CAN’T USE BANKING SYSTEMS."

Layla watched her for a moment.

"Then why would I keep him?"

There was no trace of a joke in the answer. Layla delivered it with the same plain certainty she'd used when choosing a worm to save humanity.

CHAT:

SHE SAID EVICTED

HOTNESS COULD NOT SAVE HIM

This is a tenancy dispute now...

GHOST GOT 0 ROI

Zoey flung both arms toward the ceiling. As expressive as always.

"HE WAS HOT, LAYLA. THAT WAS THE WHOLE PREMISE!"

Her hands came down against the desk.

"You can’t just reject a ghost because he doesn’t contribute financially!"

CHAT:

she just did.

ghost: moans in unemployment

SHE'S SO INVESTED 😭

HOT BUT BROKE AND ALSO DEAD

Zoey dropped backward into her chair, the argument apparently having exhausted her poor stamina already. She was way too involved in whatever could be called that discussion.

"...You’re terrifying."

Layla looked at her.

"You let him stay only because he is hot? You know you can't physically touch it, right?"

Her head tilted toward Zoey, the question delivered without accusation or any visible change in her composure.

CHAT:

SHE FOUND ANOTHER PROBLEM

SHE SAID Y’ALL THIRSTING FOR AIR

OH! She found a breach in the plan!

zoey about to defend ghost romance

Zoey straightened sharply.

"I am fully aware I can’t touch him! It’s about the vibe, Layla! The aesthetic!! The forbidden romance!!!*"

Her hands were already moving again, each new gesture adding urgency to a defense that had apparently become very important to her.

"You ever hear of yearning?? You don’t need physical contact when there’s EMOTIONAL LONGING AND CURSED BASEMENTS."

Layla listened patiently through the entire defense, waiting for Zoey's hands to settle before answering.

"Let’s say you live with him. It means nobody else will come, because you live with a ghost. Then if you have an accident... he can’t help. Nor call for help."

"...And now there are two ghosts in the apartment."

For a moment, even the chat seemed at a loss for words in front of layla's sudden reflection.

...

CHAT:

OH MY GOD 💀💀💀

LAYLA TURNED IT INTO A TRAGEDY

TWO GHOSTS IN THE APARTMENT

this went from romcom to horror in ONE SENTENCE

THIS GOT DARK SO FAST

Zoey stared at her with her mouth open.

"...Are you telling me I would die... alone... next to a ghost lover who couldn't even dial an emergency number?"

She folded forward onto the desk.

"I just wanted a cute haunted loft. Not a cautionary tale."

CHAT:

layla just scared zoey out of her own daydreams

this is why you read the fine print before you date a ghost

tragedy level: polter-husband

Layla continued examining the situation with the same calm attention.

"But as a new ghost... you can now touch him. Do you want to touch him?"

The question was so direct that Zoey's entire body seemed to reject it before she managed an answer.

CHAT:

OH SHE WENT THERE 💀💀💀

LAYLA WHAT THE HELL THAT’S ILLEGAL

AYOOOOOOO

LAYLA????

Zoey pushed herself out of the chair and began pacing within the narrow space captured by the camera, one hand covering part of her face.

"WHAT...Wha-WHY WOULD YOU ASK THAT"

Her feet nearly tangled beneath her during the turn back, and she caught herself before dropping into the chair again with both hands in the air.

"THAT'S NOT- I WASN'T PLANNING TO DO ANYTHING WITH THE GHOST!!"

CHAT:

ZOEY.exe HAS STOPPED

SHE SAID DO YOU WANT TO TOUCH HIM AND BROKE HER

LAYLA JUST ACTIVATED HER FINAL FORM

CLIP IT

Layla remained where she was, watching Zoey's retreat back into the chair.

"He waited for you to die. You can't reject him now that you are a ghost too."

The statement arrived quietly, without any visible attempt to make the situation more dramatic. She delivered it with the same matter-of-fact calm she'd brought to every other complication in the hypothetical.

CHAT:

WHATTTTTTTTT

LAYLA NOOOOO 💀💀💀

SHE MADE IT TRAGICALLY ROMANTIC OUT OF NOWHERE

that sentence aged me 20 years

Zoey froze with one hand still partly raised.

"...So now I’m... ethically obligated to love the ghost?"

She sank deeper into the chair as the implications caught up with her.

"He waited for me... Layla what the hell."

CHAT:

LAYLA SAID YOU OWE HIM

Layla lowered her voice before adding another comment...

"Perhaps he even caused the accident..."

CHAT:

"...I trusted him."

One hand came to her chest, and the ghost who had never existed suddenly received the full weight of her betrayal.

"He said he just wanted to watch over me."

Zoey rose slowly from her chair, fingers closing around its back as the imaginary romance completed its transformation into a gothic murder mystery. She was acting as dramatically as she possibly could. It was far from deserving an Oscar, but amusing nonetheless."

"He loosened the rug."

CHAT:

NOT THE RUG 💀

THIS STREAM HAS A PLOT NOW

Layla's attention shifted from Zoey back to the products still waiting beside them on the desk.

"I think the product has worked now. Should we look?"

Zoey blinked at her, then followed her gaze to the products and mirror. The skincare test had been sitting there through the entire argument, quietly waiting for them to remember it.

Only then did Zoey realize how much time had passed. What had started as one stupid question about a hot ghost had carried them through twenty minutes of increasingly ridiculous arguments, and somewhere along the way she'd stopped paying attention to the clock entirely. She'd just been having fun.

The realization lingered for a moment before Zoey looked back at the abandoned experiment.
