Blair Penelope Cooper had always believed that moving to a new country would feel like turning a clean, untouched page.

But that morning, as she stood on a narrow Amsterdam sidewalk with a gray suitcase by her side, what she felt wasn’t excitement—it was something much quieter.

Blair was twenty, with light brown hair she usually let fall naturally.Full novel: Letters the Rain Never Sent — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Her eyes were hazel, though they rarely looked truly bright.

There was a kind of exhaustion that couldn’t be explained by the word *tired* alone.

She wore a thin cream-colored coat and an oversized knit sweater that hung loosely on her slim frame.

She came from Rome, leaving behind her family, and too many things she never managed to say.

Not because there wasn’t time, but because she never knew how to say them.

She took a slow breath, then looked up at the small apartment building in front of her.

This was where her new life began.

Amsterdam wasn’t an escape.

But it was her choice.

Kattie—the talkative girl—was the only reason Blair didn’t feel completely alone.

They met a few months earlier during international student orientation.

Kattie, with her dark blonde hair that always seemed full of life and eyes that couldn’t hide her curiosity, had sat beside Blair, who at the time was far too quiet for someone in their twenties.

“You look like you’re thinking about something heavy,” Kattie had said, trying to break the ice, handing her a bottle of water.

From that day on, she always chose the seat next to Blair.

Now they shared a place.

Their apartment sat inside a well-kept old building.

It wasn’t big, but it was bright.

Sunlight streamed in through their large windows every morning, reflecting off clean wooden floors and a soft gray sofa.

The walls weren’t fully filled yet—there was still plenty of empty space, waiting for whatever they would discover next.

Kattie walked back and forth, opening moving boxes.

“I think this place is perfect,” she said, dropping down onto the rug.

Her hair was tied up messily, an oversized white T-shirt covering half her hands.

“Not too fancy, not too cramped.

Kinda like… the life we’re building.”

Blair watched the way Kattie smiled so easily, how she could laugh at the smallest things.

And for the first time since arriving, the room didn’t feel so empty.

Somehow, from that moment on, Kattie became a second home to Blair.

Brunne’s bookstore was only a short walk from their apartment.

The building looked old, with peeling paint and slightly foggy display windows.

But inside, it felt like a different world—slower, warmer, and more honest.

Brunne was thirty-five, with a calm face and a way of speaking only when necessary.

His dark brown hair was beginning to fade at the edges.

His eyes were sharp, but never judgmental.

Blair first stepped inside just to escape the cold.

It wasn’t the books that made her stay.

It was the sense of safety she couldn’t quite explain.

On her first Sunday working there, the rain had been falling since the afternoon.

Blair stood behind the counter, arranging books with slow, careful movements.

Her fingers paused when the small bell above the door rang.

Someone walked in.

His steps were calm.

Not rushed.

Not hesitant.

Blair looked up.

And for the first time since she set foot in this city, something inside her felt… stirred.

She didn’t know his name then.

She only knew that the meeting would stay with her far longer than it should.

Hopefully.
