I picked the first door.

I stepped over the causeway rail, and the lesser caps swayed apart to make me a path, courteous as ushers, and the green fires watched me walk down it.

"Breathe when it offers," Vael said behind me. "Holding your breath only delays the chorus."Full novel: Level 1,Charm 99 — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

I breathed.

The link hit like stepping into warm water. Not a voice. A hundred soft voices, out in the reeds, none of them using throats, the whole circle thinking slowly around a single warm thought, and the thought was me. I stood in the middle of all that attention with pink-gold dust still on my tongue and understood that I was being considered.

Then the sovereign opened a door in its own mind.

What came through it was a century.

Fruit ripening with nowhere to plant. Seasons stacked on seasons of standing in the dark with everything ready and nothing asking. The sweet rot of patience.

An ache the size of a hundred years, held out to me on purpose, the way you offer a guest the best chair. It offered me the ache. It offered me the bloom. And the question shaped itself against the inside of my skull, in the only grammar it had, like a hand writing on fog: would the warm thing be the ground?

Once, standing in a marsh with a menu dissolving over my wrist, I had done the math and chosen.

Once, on a doorstep in the cold, I had said no and made it hold. This was the third thing, and there was no arithmetic in it anywhere.

"Yes," I said out loud, because it felt rude not to.

The circle's answer was a sound with no source, a hundred caps leaning one degree toward me in unison, and then the ring got to work.

A dozen rooting tendrils came to me, cool and smooth as river stones, and started on my laces. Not fumbling. Ceremonial. They eased the sides of the gown loose, slid the silk off my shoulders, gathered it, and folded it. Actually folded it, sleeves in, hem squared, with the gravity of a diplomatic gift, and passed it over the sovereign's shoulder.

Vael caught it.

"I'll hold the dress. Pages don't need dresses."

My boots came off next, drawn away by two tendrils and set side by side on the plank. My smallclothes after that, folded with the same absurd solemnity, and then I was bare on the cold peat with the bloom's heat pooling low inside me, and the seven rods at the crown of the sovereign were weeping freely.

Pale gold, tapered, spongy-soft over a slower flexing core, glossy to the root with a clear gel that smelled of honey and proofing bread.

Not cocks, exactly. Cock-shaped ambition, doing the work.

As the tendrils bared me, all seven bent toward my warmth in unison, the way Brok's iron bar had turned on the anvil. Nothing in this world had ever needed telling where I was.

Tendrils took my waist and thighs and lifted me like I weighed nothing.

The first rod notched against my pussy, and I was swollen already, dripping already, the bloom's honeyed heat waiting for exactly this.

It pushed in.

Gentle, endless, the stretch of it arriving in slow increments, and the girth firmed as it stroked, swelling to fill whatever it touched, fitting itself to me by occupying me completely.

Then the mirror opened.

Through the rapport I felt my own cunt from the sovereign's side. Grip and heat, mapped inch by inch from the inside of its flesh. Every clench I made arrived as its sensation. Its slow, honey-heavy pleasure arrived as mine.

Doubled.

I was feeling myself gripping myself, and my head fell back, and the moan that tore out of me scattered frogs for a quarter mile.

I came before the rod was halfway seated.

And my climax rippled backwards through the link. Into the sovereign. Its whole body shuddered, the gill-beard flaring wide, and it spent. The rod pulsed and hosed heat into me, gel-thick and endless, overflowed around its own girth and ran down my thighs, steaming in the cold marsh air.

It did not stop. It had waited a century. It was not going to be quick about spending it.

RAPPORT LINK STABLE.

SENSATION: MIRRORED.

you are both feeling this. the System checked.

you are both feeling this.

The ground moved.

Pale gold mycelium welled up through the black peat and knitted itself into a broad shelf, soft and warm as proofing dough, grown in the time it took me to notice the ground was bored of being ground.

The tendrils laid me down on it, and the sovereign came down over me, covering me, its vast cap spreading like a canopy, and the green firelight filtered down through the gill-fringe in ribbed stripes.

Cathedral light. Dark, private, damp heat wrapped all around me, and I arched up into the covering weight with a sound I didn't recognise as mine.

Covered, held, enclosed. The ladder the troll had started and Hobb had confirmed, and this was the top rung, and I climbed it with my whole spine.

The second rod nudged lower, gel-wet against the tight pucker of me, patient as tide. The spores had my body open and pliant as warm wax. It pressed in, unhurried, and my rim bloomed around the tapered girth, and I keened, doubly filled, both rods working a slow offset rhythm, cunt, ass, cunt, ass, the wet schlick-squelch of it loud as rain in the hush.

I hauled my focus together, found the muscle, and flexed Velvet Grip down both rods at once.

The feedback loop nearly killed us both.

My grip felt its pleasure. Its pleasure fed my grip. The circle's wordless voice rose around us like a congregation finding its note, the gills flared wide, and when I squirted they drank the spray right off my skin, a fine hot mist hanging green-lit in the air. The second load flooded my ass. The third flooded my cunt in the same shuddering minute, and my belly went warm and round with the volume, sloshing faintly every time the rhythm moved me.

And at the peak, exactly at the peak, there was a third listener on the link.

One heartbeat. Something vast. Something crowned. Cold green attention, far away and much too close, leaning in toward the place where I was most openly me.

The circle slammed a door in its face.

The fires dimmed a shade. On the causeway, Vael's shuttered lantern flickered on her belt, one pulse, like something answering something.

[ DO NOT ANS

[ WINDOW TERMINATED ]

the circle is being polite about this.

the System is not.

The rhythm continued.

The ceremony was unbroken. But I lay under a fungal lord in the ruins of my own coherence, holding two new facts about the world, and both of them went straight into the crowded drawer: something crowned could touch me anywhere, even there. And something down in the peat could tell it no.

The sovereign gathered me up.

It sat back on a throne the ring had grown for it while I wasn't watching, mycelium spiralled up into a great seated back, and it took me into its lap like something it had decided was precious.

My back against its spongy chest. Its arms folding around me entirely. The cap drooped over us both until we were tented in warm, dark, green light coming through the gills in little star-points, and the hundred-voice hush of the circle wrapped around the outside of it all.

And I understood, dimly, through the link, what it had actually waited a century for.

Not the rods. Not the spending. This. Held. Covered completely, covering completely, with somebody to be gentle with at last. A hundred years of standing in the dark with arms full of gift.

I went liquid in its grip.

The central rod was different from the rest.

Thicker, and hollowed at the tip into a soft bulb. It seated against my deepest place, kissed my cervix with gentle, unbearable pressure, and planted. A firm, wet pop of fullness that stayed when the rod withdrew. A warm ovoid weight settled deep in my belly, and I felt the arrival of it in my spine, a small sweet gravity I would be carrying out of this marsh.

[ SPORE-BLOOM → BLOOM-SEEDED ]

A PALE SEED-CUP RESTS INSIDE YOU. IT WILL DISSOLVE OVER THREE DAYS.

GESTATION: N/A. IT IS A GIFT, NOT A PARCEL.

Probably.

THE SYSTEM WILL BE PRETENDING THIS IS FINE.

"Probably," I read aloud, in the dark, under a mushroom. The System did not elaborate.

After that it was earnest. My sloppy cunt and ass hosed full again and again while it rocked me in its lap like a cradle, tendrils stroking my hair, my throat, my bouncing tits, patient and thorough and in no hurry whatsoever, and my orgasms ran together into one long rolling blackout.

I came back to myself in pieces, just long enough to be filled again, and went back under. My final squirt sheeted down its folded legs and soaked into the gill-beard, which flared and drank and fluttered like a flag in a storm.

Spent, at last, it lifted me off with both arms, set me back down on the gold bed as carefully as setting down a full cup. And then the sovereign bowed. From the waist. To its congregation.

Twelve caps bowed back.

They came shy.

Three lesser caps, man-high, slender pale rods already weeping, edging toward me like boys at their first dance, and the circle's slow ceremonial rhythm moved them whether they liked it or not. The first came into me to that rhythm, both my hands held in cool tendrils so that I couldn't, and didn't want to, do anything but be still for it. It spent twice inside me in honey-thin floods, trembling out apologies that were not words.

The second was textured. Its rod was faintly spiralled, ridges dragging my walls on every stroke, and I sobbed and came twice more on the strength of geometry alone.

The third was quick, ridged at the crown like a mushroom's underside, and it blushed, whatever blushing is when your whole body is a mushroom, a deeper gold at the cap-rim, and finished fast and folded itself away like a hand closing.

The rest of the ring attended with touches. Blessing-soft tendril-contacts at my ankles, my shoulders, my hair, each one a small cool stamp, while the sovereign presided from its throne with its arms spread wide over all of it. I had been consecrated into somebody's liturgy, I thought, somewhere in the middle of it, and the hymns were excellent.

The bloom peaked as the last attendant spent. The whole ring exhaled, a gold-dust sigh rolling across the water, and the green fires stood up straight, dimmed, and went back to being ordinary wrong instead of watching wrong. The colours of the caps calmed. And the frogs resumed, one throat at a time, like an orchestra tuning.

The sovereign bowed to me last.

Then the entire circle sank. Unhurried, caps submerging like setting moons, courteous to the end, the peat closing over them fold by fold until the shallows stood empty and calm, and nothing was left of any of it but the warm weight below my navel and the honey smell soaked into my bones.

Empty water. Calm frogs. Two women. One lantern clicking shut.

"Fifth page," Vael said.

Her ledger-eyes ran the inventory: gel-sheeted thighs, gold dust in my lashes, a woman-shaped crime scene that smelled like a bakehouse.

"You've honey in your eyebrows."

She handed me the folded gown and her canteen. I rinsed, spat gold, and drank half of it, the best water of my life or near enough. The silk went back on over skin that had opinions about silk.

"Dusk bell in forty minutes," she said.

"Walk, don't run." A beat. "Running shakes the cup loose."

So: a mile of causeway, at a sedate pace, holding a seed level as a full bowl, while the torc climbed. The chime came before I'd made it ten planks, and it brought the whole reckoning.

I did the arithmetic while I walked, because walking sedately leaves the hands free for arithmetic. Twenty-six. The blessing-touches had counted, all twelve of them, the ring's whole congregation entered into the ledger as minimal satisfactions, and the system had accepted every one. Nine, plus Joss, plus the sovereign, plus three attendants, plus twelve blessings. And after all of it, the till still came up over by exactly one coin, the same single coin, every night, and now the shopkeeper had started leaving notes about it. The system was being haunted by its own count, and it knew.

The status window bloomed over the drowned pasture.

ZELIA BISHOP — LV 4 — HP 70/70

ROUTE B — STAGE 4 OF 6

SKILLS: 3

STATUS: BLOOM-SEEDED (DORMANT)

TRIAL: 2 DAYS

Three skills, one seed, one cask at seventy-eight percent, and a gate garrison between my bed and me. The causeway ran its grey mile ahead, dusk pooling black between the plank-gaps, the dead trees standing in their reflections, and the torc sat at my throat with the weight of a warm fist and opinions about the walk.

The menu hung in the failing light, patient as ever.
