The square at midnight belonged to the lamps and the dog.
Market debris lay swept into windrows against the well-stair, and the lamplighter was dousing the last lamp by its hood, an old man with a squint and a leather apron, and he looked at me the way men look at me now, through the torc's quiet drinking. A comely woman alone in a cold square. Odd. Nothing to lose your mind over.
"Late for anyone honest, miss," he said, gathering his ladder.
"Earlier for anyone otherwise."
He went down the ladder and away, dog at his heel, and the square was mine.
I took out the compass in the centre, where the streets met, and gave it the whole town.
The needle swept like a lighthouse. A faint tug as it crossed the Stag, which was only Hobb, asleep, cured, dreaming whatever cured men dream. It skipped Smith's Row entirely, the way a stone skips water.
Iron reads as nothing, and Brok had earned his nothing. Over the barracks it dragged through dozens of small fires of ordinary men, and I stood in the cold grinning at the arithmetic, because every one of them was able to resist me precisely none.
The needle went around the town like that, tug, skip, drag, and would not settle, because settling requires a winner.
Then, for one clean moment, it lay still.
An empty reading. I owned this room.
I had perhaps three seconds to enjoy it.
The needle slammed over. Not a tug. A yank, hard enough to click against the case, and it pinned up the hill, past wall and curtain, on the tower.
On the high window.
The shuttered window.
COMPASS READING — ENTITY MOST ABLE TO RESIST CHARM: LOCATED.
DISTANCE: 0.4 MILES.
ELEVATION: 140 FEET.
IDENTITY: [UNREGISTERED].
RESISTANCE: ABSOLUTE.
THE NEEDLE IS NOT TREMBLING WITH DOUBT. IT IS TREMBLING WITH EFFORT.
It got worse. The needle began tearing itself in two before my eyes, wavering off the keep, hauled west toward the marsh, the drowned willows, the green, then hauling back to the window. A dog on two leads. Two norths.
It chose the keep. Barely.
The shutter opened. Inward, slow, no hand anywhere in sight of it. Candlelight came out, gold, ordinary, steady, and behind the glass stood a silhouette.
Tall.
Furniture-still.
Set a little back from the window, the way a man stands when he wants to see and not be seen, and failing at it.
He was looking at the centre of the square. At me. Too far for a face. Far enough for certainty. The gaze came across all that cold air and settled on me like a hand on the back of my neck.
Two things happened in the same breath.
The seed-cup gave one slow warm pulse. A sleeper turning over. A courtier bowing to a crown it recognised.
And the torc began to drink.
TORC CHARGE: 0% → 3%
SOURCE: THE WINDOW.
RANGE: 0.4 MILES.
THE TORC IS DRINKING FROM A GAZE. IT SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS.
THE TORC AGREES. IT IS DOING IT ANYWAY.
TORC: 5%. 7%.
HE HAS NOT BLINKED.
I stood in the lamplight with a compass pinned on a widower's window and a bell filling at my throat from half a mile away, and the understanding arrived the way cold water does, all at once and from underneath.
Whatever stood at that window was doing to me what I did to whole rooms. Drinking me. Politely. At range. Or better at it than I was.
The candle burned gold. Gold. Gold.
Green. One blink, the whole window rimmed in cold green firelight.
And out. The shutters drew closed, slow as they had opened, and the needle sank back to idle, exhausted, like a bird landing. Three streets away, a dog began barking at nothing and could not stop.
Inside me the seed pulsed once more, warm, and slept.

I picked the walls, and my legs were already moving uphill.
The keep road climbed in switchbacks with lamps strung through it like beads, and I took the gaps between them, dark stretch by dark stretch. The torc ticked upward the whole way, arithmetic rather than danger, barracks and wall-walk and the sleeping weight of men behind stone.
TORC: 7% → 11%.
DRINKING.
PACE: GENTLE.
At the brow, the keep filled the sky, and I stopped being a woman walking and became a woman measuring. Compass flat in my palm. The needle leaned uphill like a pointing dog.
At two hundred yards, the needle stopped trembling.
That was worse. Strain you can hear is strain being spent. Stillness at that tension meant everything being spent at once. My breath hung white. Frost crunched under my boots like a metronome.
At a hundred and fifty, the needle bent. A slow physical bow, the silver visibly curving off its pivot, like grass deciding about wind.
NEEDLE DEFLECTION: 14°... 19°...
THE COMPASS WAS BUILT TO FIND THE MAN MOST ABLE TO RESIST YOU.
IT WAS NOT BUILT FOR WHAT RESISTS IT BACK.
At a hundred yards, the seed woke.
Not pain. Recognition. A warm pulse deep in my belly, in time with something, and it took me a dozen steps to identify the rhythm, because it was not my heartbeat. It was the flicker. A light I could not see was breathing somewhere above me, and the sovereign's gift was breathing with it.
At eighty yards, my body followed.
Heat unspooled low in me, uninvited, thorough. My nipples drew tight against the silk. My inner thighs were slick past blaming the marsh, and there was a thick deliberate pulse between my legs that made every step a small wet confession.
It was not the spores.
The spores were three parts dissolved. This was attention, the thing my charm was the light of, leaning down the tower the way a man leans over a well, and my body was a wick, and wicks do not get asked.
I made the wall on legs, operating it by remote.
The tower rose out of the inner ward, past the outer curtain, sixty feet of you-and-it, the high window shuttered above like a closed eye. I raised the compass one last time.
The needle pressed flat against the crystal. Bowed. Bowed. The glass ticked, a hairline crack crossing it, and the needle snapped at the pivot with a sound like a struck insect wing, bent tip jammed against the crystal, aimed up at the window, quivering.
The shutters opened.
No candle this time. The window lit green, slow, sourceless, a drowned aquarium glow, and against it stood the silhouette. Tall. Spare. Close to the glass now, and at the crown of his head the light broke wrong. A rim. A ridge. An interruption that had no business being there.
I want to be exact about what my eyes could do from the foot of that wall, because the rest was not my eyes. Sixty feet of tower between us. From underneath, a lit window is a rectangle and a shape, and that is all.
The room arrived when the attention did.
It came down the tower like a hand lowered into a well, and closed around me, and the chamber came with it, pressed into my skull behind my eyes the way the word FOUND had once arrived without any sound at all.
Not seen. Delivered. Paper. Stacks of it, towers of it, months of it, on a long table and across the floor. Chairs. A half-circle of them, arranged facing the window, all empty, all patient, an audience seated for something that had not started yet. I knew that room the way I had once known a century of waiting in the marsh. A door opened in something's mind, and mine stood on the other side of it.
Then the hand closed all the way.
My knees went. I caught the wall. Pressure filled my ears, the long-hall voice, almost-shape, almost-word, a syllable assembling itself out of green static, patient as tide, and my body answered it without one atom of my consent.

[THE COUNT DISAGREES]
[DO NOT FINISH IT]
A lantern swung around the shoulder of the curtain wall.
The green went out. The shutters drew closed in slow reverse, the attention lifted off me like a hand removed from the back of my neck, and the absence dropped me the last inch against cold stone. Shaking. Denied. Dripping. The cramp of a finish confiscated at the door pulsed low in my pelvis like a bruise.
I put my forehead against the wall. The broken needle's bent tip still aimed at the shutters above.
"Midnight," said Ser Gavric, "is a poor hour for admiring masonry."
He stood with the wall lantern at arm's length and the aura of a man three hours into a round he had walked ten thousand times. His eyes went over me and did the arithmetic with no visible effort. Hood. Cloak. The wrecked compass still open in my shaking hand, bent needle kissing its cracked crystal.
"You're standing where I stand, on the bad nights. Off the lamplight, past where the sentries' rounds cross."
He set the lantern down on a bench, unhurried, and looked up at the shuttered window exactly once, and not long.
"Found that spot myself, years before you needed it. Iron singing again, too. Louder than my yard this morning."
"Captain—"
"Save it. I'll give you what I have, and you'll decide what it's worth."
He spoke the way he wrote, square, no flourishes.
"Two winters since anyone but Chancellor Malden's seen him. Food goes up. Paper comes down. Signatures match. I checked them against his marriage bond with my own magnifying glass, because a captain who can't trust his lord's hand should know it." A beat. "It's his hand. Or it was."
The lantern hissed. Somewhere below the town, the dog started up again and could not stop.
"He stood through his wife's funeral like a fence post in January. Went up the tower that same evening. Hasn't come down since. Malden climbs once a month with the ledgers, comes down grey, won't speak till morning."
His jaw worked once.
"Winter before last I had the night watch on that door myself. Heard him through the oak. Talking. Low. Conversational. Pausing for answers."
A silence with weight in it.
"I put my ear to that door, miss, and I'll tell you what I heard in the pauses. The room breathing."
He picked the lantern back up. That was the whole speech.
"Day after tomorrow he comes down those stairs for the third test. First time in two years. Half the province in the hall. It's seventy feet from the doors to the dais, and you'll walk every one of them in the first test, and whatever's been up there being talked to will walk down to meet you at the end of it."
His eyes came to mine, flat grey, old.
"I don't know what comes downstairs after two winters of that. Neither does Malden. Ask yourself what a Companion of the Court is."
He turned downhill.
"Lit streets. Your inn. Don't come up this hill again before the bell. Dismissed, candidate."
He walked me as far as the first switchback without another word, and left me there with the lantern light going down the dark like a slow yellow apology.

I walked down through the lamplit town, and the town did not know anything, and I envied it. My knees had steadied by the second switchback. The low denied throb between them had not.
The bent needle in my palm lay aimed back over my shoulder at the shutters on the hill, a small silver accusation. One full day left before the bell.
The menu hung in the dark, patient as ever, four doors again.
