The warning was still hanging in the air when the vault ceiling pulsed blue. Once. Then again, harder. The chamber glass answered with a thin vibration, and every dormant conduit in the room turned toward the Spire above them as if the building had called for help.
The first maintenance estimate made the problem physical. Protection required power whether Jace liked the accounting or not. Refusing rent would not erase the bill. It would only force somebody to decide where the cost went instead.
TERRITORY DISTRESS SIGNAL
Origin: Spire Safe Zone.
Barrier Integrity: 38%.
Protected Population: Rising.
"Of course," Jace said. "The building found a new emergency."
Seraphina was already moving toward the stairwell. "That signal is above us."
Theodore kept one hand on the heir's shutoff. Caleb remained with the unstable chambers, gold diagnostics spread between his fingers. Elijah stood beside the glass, close enough to hear if the heir spoke again.
"Go," Theodore said. "Command has not arrived. That does not mean they stopped coming."
Jace pushed himself upright and immediately remembered he had no Stamina left. Seraphina caught him under the arm before gravity finished making the point.
"I can walk."
"You can participate in walking."
"Generous distinction."
The climb back through the buried stairwell took longer than it should have. By the time they reached the throne room, the Spire was humming through the walls. The sound followed them into the lower hall and sharpened into overlapping voices, coughing, crying, and somebody giving medical instructions with the confidence of a person who had no time to ask whether anyone planned to listen.
The main doors stood open. People filled the broken plaza beyond them. Some carried bags. Some carried children. Others carried nothing because the format had not left them enough time to choose what mattered. A pale barrier curved over the nearest streets, flickering wherever red fractures still crawled through the ruined skyline. A man in a torn emergency-services jacket was directing survivors away from the weakest section. He had blood on one sleeve that was not his and a little girl asleep against his shoulder.
"Keep the center path clear," he called. "Walking wounded inside. Everyone else against the walls. If the blue line dims, do not touch it."
The barrier dimmed. Nobody touched it.
"That Liam?" Seraphina asked.
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
The Spire answered before Jace could.
FIELD PERSONNEL IDENTIFIED
Liam Carter.
Former Occupation: Emergency Medical Technician.
Current Function: Unregistered Safe Zone Coordinator.
A woman kneeling beside three injured survivors looked up sharply. Her dark hair was tied back with a strip torn from somebody's shirt, and her hands did not stop moving while she assessed Jace from across the hall.
"Whoever you are," she said, "sit down before I have four patients instead of three."
"Jace."
"I did not ask your name. I asked you to sit."
FIELD PERSONNEL IDENTIFIED
Emma Chen.
Former Occupation: Emergency Nurse.
Current Function: Unregistered Medical Lead.
Jace sat because his knees had already voted. The moment he touched the floor, the territory interface opened.
SPIRE TERRITORY: EMERGENCY STATUS
Protected Lives: 172.

Safe Zone Barrier: 38%.

The number changed while he read it.

Liam crossed the hall and lowered the sleeping girl onto a coat Emma had spread across the marble. He kept one hand beneath her head until Emma nodded that she had her.
"People saw the blue field holding," Liam said. "Every block outside it is still shifting. Streets vanish. Buildings come back wrong. They are going to keep coming."
"How many more?"
"I stopped counting when counting started slowing down triage."
That was the closest thing to fear in his voice. Not panic. Arithmetic failing under pressure. Liam glanced toward the doors again. Every time someone crossed the boundary, his shoulders eased, then tightened around the next person still outside. He had turned one corner of the hall into triage using coats, broken signs, and strips of clean fabric scavenged from somewhere the format had missed. No title had assigned it. No quest had promised him experience. He kept moving because people were hurt and stopping would make him notice how many he could not reach.
"What happens when the field fails?" Jace asked.
Liam looked at the flickering blue edge. "The people closest to it move first. The ones who cannot move get carried. After that, we find out whether the street still exists."
Jace looked past him at the plaza. A man supported an older woman through the barrier. Two teenagers carried a door between them with an injured stranger tied to it. Nobody was cheering. They had not come because they believed in Jace or the throne or anything grand enough to become a title. They had come because one patch of Manhattan was not actively trying to erase them.
The territory count moved again.
Protected Lives: 181 → 187.
Territory Charge Reserve: 8% → 6%.
SAFE ZONE FAILURE ESTIMATE: 00:18:00.
Emma pressed two fingers against Jace's throat, then looked at the black veins along his hand. "You are not powering anything with your body."
"Wasn't planning to."
"You said that too quickly."
The title screen opened across his vision.

Jace read it twice. The field could count every frightened person under it. It could measure the failing barrier, calculate the reserve, and identify the exact medical roles people had taken without permission. The one thing it could not understand was why anyone should be sheltered without entering somebody's ledger.
"Can it be stabilized?" Liam asked.
"Yes," Seraphina said.
Jace looked at her. "That answer had a second half."
"It always does."
The Spire offered the second half itself.
