Elin’s small farmhouse had grown too quiet for the son she’d raised inside it.

Dako trained in the field behind the house most mornings now, sixteen years old, filling out steadily in the months since his Awakening in a way that had crept up on Elin gradually enough that she sometimes still caught herself surprised by it, swinging a borrowed practice blade through forms he’d mostly taught himself from watching traveling swordsmen pass through the village over the years before his own Awakening ever arrived.

His level had climbed steadily since that day, careful, patient growth built on cleared bounties and small monster contracts rather than any single dramatic leap, and the village that had once celebrated his fifty and his cap of fourteen hundred had already run out of anything left to teach him.Full novel: Level to Infinity — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Elin watched him from the kitchen window that morning, mending a basket she didn’t really need mended, using the work as an excuse to simply be near him a while longer before the conversation she knew was coming finally arrived.

It arrived at breakfast.

“I want to travel,” Dako said, setting down his cup with more care than the statement probably needed.

“Not far, at first.

Just enough to see what’s actually out there beyond this village.

I’ve cleared every contract worth clearing within three days’ walk of here.

There’s nothing left for me to grow against.”

Elin’s hands stilled over the basket.

She had known this morning would come for years now, had watched it approaching the way a person watches weather roll in from a distance, plenty of warning and still no way to stop it once it finally broke.

“Where would you go,” she asked, careful to keep her voice steady.

Toward the larger cities.

I’ve heard enough stories over the years to know there’s more out there worth seeing than what fits inside this valley.” He hesitated, something softer crossing his face.

“I’m not leaving because of you.

I want you to know that.

This is the only home I’ve ever known, and you’re the only family I’ve ever had.

I just need to know what I actually am out there, beyond what this village can show me.”

Elin set the basket aside entirely and reached across the table for his hand, the same way she had a hundred times through his childhood, whenever some hurt needed more comfort than words alone could offer.

“Go,” she said simply.

“I raised you to be more than this valley could ever hold, even if I didn’t always understand why that felt so important.

Just promise me you’ll come back, when you can.”

“I promise,” he said, and meant it fully, with no idea yet how complicated that promise would eventually become.

Far south, in Abarat’s gleaming capital, a very different kind of conversation was unfolding in the demon court’s own private chambers, one that would, within the year, come to matter more to Dako’s future than either he or Elin could possibly have guessed. Seraphia had only been awakened three years, and already the entire demon hierarchy spoke her name with a mixture of awe and open unease that few among even the archdemons commanded so quickly.

She trained alone, by preference, in a private courtyard carved from black stone deep within the palace grounds, a rapier her weapon of choice, her movements carrying a precision that seemed less like technique and more like a language she’d been born fluent in.

Her signature skill, the one the court whispered about most, was a movement technique that placed her, without fail, directly inside an opponent’s blind spot the instant a fight truly began, a positioning advantage no amount of skill or awareness had yet proven capable of countering.

It was hardly her only weapon.

She fought with a growing library of techniques that had, in the span of three short years, turned her into something the court increasingly treated as untouchable.

**Blade God**, a stance that sharpened every strike that followed it into something faster than the eye could properly track.

**Demonic Thrust** and its answering counter, **Demonic Parry**, a matched pair built to punish any opponent foolish enough to commit fully to a single line of attack.

**Shadow Clone**, splitting her presence across the battlefield in ways that made focusing her down nearly impossible.

**Contain**, a binding technique that locked an opponent’s own mana or stamina briefly in place.

**Life Drain**, converting the damage she dealt directly into her own recovery.

**Blade Stun**, a precise strike calibrated to lock muscle rather than cut flesh.

**Barrage**, a closing technique that turned her rapier into something closer to a storm than a single weapon.

Combined with the Star’s Blessing that sat, rare and coveted, over her own bloodline, and a level that had already climbed past four thousand in barely three years of training, the court had quietly begun referring to her, in private conversations not meant to reach her ears, as the single most dangerous soul Abarat had produced in a generation, archdemons included.

She trained that morning as she always did, alone, precise, relentless, entirely unaware that a demon lord’s hidden son, human in every visible feature and utterly unaware of his own bloodline, had just made a quiet promise to the only mother he’d ever known, a promise that would, sooner than either of them expected, carry him directly into the same world she already ruled without contest.
