The rain hadn’t stopped in New York.

It never really did.

It just changed intensity, like the city couldn’t decide between washing itself clean or drowning everything on principle.Full novel: Leveling Up As A Symbiote Girlfriend — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Eve stood at the window of her apartment, coffee mug in hand, watching headlights smear across wet asphalt below.

Nyx was quiet.

Too quiet.

That was never a good sign.

“You are thinking about her again,” Nyx said eventually.

Eve didn’t answer immediately.

“I’m thinking about a lot of things.”

“That is false.

Your neural activity spikes only when she is the subject.”

“…You don’t have to say it like I’m a lab report.”

Nyx paused.

“I am a lab report.”

Eve exhaled through her nose, half amused, half stressed.

Maya.

Lunch was happening.

That was still real.

That was still scheduled.

That was still terrifying in a completely different way than armed mercenaries or symbiote experiments.

Social danger.

Worst category.

“I don’t understand this reaction,” Nyx continued.

“You face armed threats without hesitation.

But a shared meal produces instability.”

“That’s because bullets are simple,” Eve muttered.

“People aren’t.”

Nyx processed that silently.

Then, softer:

“People are unpredictable.”

“Exactly.”

A beat.

Then Nyx added:

“I like unpredictability when it leads to violence.”

“That explains a lot about you.”

Eve put the mug down and rubbed her face.

“Just… don’t interfere today.”

A pause.

“That is not a reasonable request.”

“I’m serious.”

Another pause.

“I will attempt restraint,” Nyx said finally, tone suspiciously formal.

“That’s not reassuring.”

“It is the maximum available function.”

Eve grabbed her jacket.

The city outside felt louder than usual, even through glass.

Like everything was slightly closer to the surface.

She left anyway.

The meeting place was a small diner tucked under an elevated rail line.

Classic New York survival architecture: cheap, slightly broken, but still standing out of spite.

Maya was already there.

Of course she was.

She was sitting in a booth, hands wrapped around a glass of something neon-colored that looked like it had no legal right to exist.

She didn’t wave.

She just looked up.

“You showed up,” she said.

Eve slid into the seat opposite her.

“I said I would.”

“That doesn’t mean people usually do.”

Nyx whispered immediately.

“She is calibrating expectation behavior.”

“Stop analyzing her like she’s a system update.”

“I analyze everything.”

Eve sighed.

“Hi.”

Maya tilted her head slightly.

“Hi.”

Silence.

Not awkward.

Just dense.

Like both of them were waiting for the other to break reality first.

Finally, Maya spoke.

“You always talk to yourself like that?”

Eve blinked.

“…Like what?”

“Like there’s someone else in your head.”

Eve froze.

Nyx froze too.

For a fraction of a second, even the symbiote didn’t speak.

Then, carefully:

“No,” Eve said.

Maya stared at her for a moment.

Then shrugged.

“Okay.”

That was it.

No push.

No interrogation.

Just acceptance of the answer as presented.

Which somehow made Eve more suspicious than if she had pressed further.

Nyx, low:

“She is not normal.”

“I noticed.”

Maya took a sip of her drink.

“You look less dead today.”

“Thanks.”

“That’s a compliment.”

“I think.”

Maya leaned back slightly.

“So.

Lunch.”

“Yeah.”

Another pause.

Maya glanced at Eve’s hands.

“You always clench your fingers like that?”

Eve looked down.

She hadn’t noticed.

“…Habit.”

“From what?”

Eve hesitated.

Nyx answered before she could stop it.

“Survival response.”

Eve nearly choked internally.

“I said don’t interfere.”

“I corrected inefficiency.”

Maya’s eyes flickered slightly.

“Oh?”

Eve recovered quickly.

“…Gym habits,” she said quickly.

“Old ones.”

Maya didn’t look convinced.

But again—she didn’t push.

Instead, she changed direction entirely.

“You like spicy food?”

Eve blinked.

“…Yes?”

“Good.”

She stood up.

“Then you’re coming.”

Eve barely had time to react before Maya was already walking toward the counter.

“Wait—what do you mean ‘coming’?”

Nyx immediately:

“Follow.”

“That is not helpful.”

“Follow.”

Eve sighed.

And followed.

They ended up walking.

Which, in New York, was either a romantic gesture or a death wish depending on the neighborhood.

In their case, it was somewhere in between.

Maya walked slightly ahead, hands in her pockets, completely unbothered by traffic, noise, or general urban hostility.

Eve walked beside her, slightly tense.

Nyx observed everything.

“She is aware of surroundings but does not show fear response.”

“She’s probably used to it.”

“Or dangerous.”

“Or both,” Eve muttered under her breath.

Maya glanced sideways.

“You talk a lot to yourself.”

Eve stiffened.

“…Do I?”

“Yeah.”

Maya shrugged.

“Not judging.

Just noticing.”

Nyx whispered:

“She is extremely observant.”

“Yes, thank you.”

They reached a small food stall wedged between two buildings.

Steam rose from grills.

The air smelled like chili, oil, and survival.

Maya ordered without hesitation.

Eve followed suit, slightly overwhelmed.

When they sat again, this time on a metal bench outside, Maya finally spoke more seriously.

“You’re not from around here, are you?”

Eve almost laughed.

“…No.”

Maya nodded like that confirmed something.

“Yeah.

I figured.”

“Was it that obvious?”

“You look like you’re still deciding if the ground is real.”

Nyx commented internally:

“Accurate perception again.”

“I’m starting to notice a pattern.”

Maya ate a bite, then glanced at Eve again.

“I saw you last night.”

Eve froze slightly.

“…You did?”

Maya nodded.

“On the news clip.

Rooftop thing.”

Nyx immediately sharpened.

“Exposure event.”

“Don’t panic.”

“I am not panicking.

I am evaluating threat escalation.”

Maya continued casually.

“You move weird.”

“…Excuse me?”

“Not bad weird,” she clarified.

“Just… like you’re syncing two bodies at once.”

Eve’s grip tightened slightly on her food.

Nyx went silent.

For once, no immediate comment.

Maya watched her reaction carefully.

“…That’s a guess,” Maya added.

Eve forced a small laugh.

“Yeah.

Bad coordination.”

Maya didn’t respond immediately.

Then:

“Right.”

That single word carried too much understanding.

Eve felt something uncomfortable settle in her chest.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

Recognition.

Nyx finally spoke.

“Her perception is increasing.”

“I noticed.”

“She is approaching truth boundary.”

“I know.”

Maya finished her food and leaned back.

“You ever think about leaving New York?”

Eve blinked.

“…Every day.”

“Same.”

That answer hit differently than expected.

Maya continued:

“But I don’t.”

“Why not?”

Maya looked up at the sky between buildings.

“Because something always happens here.”

A pause.

Then, quieter:

“And I don’t want to miss it.”

Nyx spoke softly.

“She is also drawn to instability.”

“That’s not comforting.”

“It is alignment.”

Eve looked at Maya again.

“You’re not scared of it?”

Maya smirked slightly.

“Of what?

Chaos?”

A shrug.

“Chaos is just… normal here.”

Eve didn’t know how to respond to that.

Because she couldn’t tell if it was wisdom or resignation.

Maybe both.

Maya stood again.

“Walk with me a bit more.”

Eve hesitated.

Then stood.

“Yeah… okay.”

Nyx didn’t object.

For once.

Which was almost more concerning than if she had.

As they walked, the city felt different.

Not safer.

Not calmer.

Just… less hostile in a direct way.

Maya talked occasionally.

Small things.

Observations.

Random thoughts.

Eve responded less and less cautiously.

And somewhere between intersections and sirens and distant explosions that nobody reacted to anymore…

Nyx spoke quietly inside her mind.

“She sees you.”

Eve frowned slightly.

“What?”

“She perceives your dual-state existence.”

“That sounds dramatic.”

“It is accurate.”

Eve glanced at Maya walking slightly ahead.

“…Is that bad?”

Nyx paused.

Then:

“I do not think she intends harm.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Another pause.

Then Nyx, softer:

“It is… unfamiliar.”

Eve exhaled slowly.

“Yeah.”

They kept walking.

And for the first time since waking up in this universe full of monsters and gods and impossible physics…

Eve wasn’t thinking about survival.

Not fully.

Just about the girl walking half a step ahead of her.

And the voice inside her head that, for once, didn’t feel entirely alone.
