Chapter 18: Welcome To The Jungle

Leveling Up Through Affection: The Villain's Return

The transition was instantaneous.

One second Liam was standing in a sterile, air-conditioned arena, and the next, he was plunging feet-first into a sweltering, overgrown nightmare.

He landed silently on a thick, moss-covered tree branch twenty feet above the ground.

The simulation was incredibly high-quality. The air was thick with humidity, smelling heavily of salt water, rotting vegetation, and wet soil. It was an artificial mangrove swamp, complete with massive, twisting root systems that formed natural bridges over deep pools of murky green water.

A mechanical voice echoed from the sky above, broadcasting to all three hundred competitors scattered across the artificial biome.

"Welcome to the Novice Gauntlet. The simulation will run for exactly three hours. Golden tokens are held by C-Rank beasts. Silver tokens are held by D-Rank beasts. You may also acquire tokens by removing them from other competitors. The top ten token holders will advance. Begin."

Liam did not immediately rush off to hunt monsters. That was exactly what the other two hundred and ninety-nine rookies were currently doing.

He crouched on his branch, completely still, and closed his eyes. He sent a thin, invisible pulse of shadow magic expanding outward through the dense canopy. He felt the vibrations of heavy boots splashing through the swamp water miles away.

He heard the distant, panicked shouts of solo competitors realizing they were entirely out of their depth.

Most importantly, he located a cluster of twenty distinct mana signatures moving together in a tight, highly organized formation about two miles to his east.

"Found you," Liam murmured.

He activated his ’Shadow Veil’.

The dark spidersilk suit seemed to drink in the ambient shadows of the tree canopy, turning his physical form into a blurry, translucent distortion. He dropped from the branch, landing on the muddy ground without making a single sound.

He moved with the terrifying, fluid grace of an apex predator, entirely bypassing the smaller D-Rank monsters roaming the area.

Two miles away, the Vanguard squad was operating exactly as Vespera had predicted.

Julian Vance was sitting comfortably on a large, dry boulder near the edge of a massive swamp pool. He was casually tossing a fireball from hand to hand, looking completely bored.

Five heavily armored trainees stood in a defensive circle around him, acting as his personal bodyguard detail.

The other fifteen members of his squad had fanned out into the surrounding jungle in teams of three. Their job was simple. They hunted the monsters, collected the tokens, and brought them back to Julian.

Liam found the first hunting party half a mile away from the main camp.

Three Vanguard trainees were currently struggling to take down a Razor-Scale Croc.

The C-Rank beast was massive, heavily armored, and incredibly fast in the muddy water. The trainees were shouting uncoordinated orders at each other, burning through their mana reserves as they threw basic lightning and wind spells at the monster’s thick hide.

Finally, one of the trainees managed to land a solid lightning strike directly on the beast’s exposed eye. The crocodile let out a mechanical screech and dissolved into a cloud of pixels, leaving behind a shiny golden token in the mud.

"Got it!" the lead trainee cheered, breathing heavily as he scooped up the token. He wiped sweat from his forehead. "That makes three. Let’s head back to the boss before another team tries to jump us."

"Good idea," a voice whispered from the shadows directly behind him.

The trainee completely froze. Before he could even turn his head, a hand coated in freezing black mist clamped over his mouth.

Liam did not use lethal force. The arena rules strictly prohibited killing competitors, and automated emergency barriers would trigger if a student took fatal damage. But Liam did not need to kill them.

He just needed to completely break their spirit.

He twisted his hips, dragging the lead trainee backward into the dense bushes with impossible strength. The other two Vanguard members spun around, their eyes going wide with panic as they realized their squad leader had just vanished into thin air.

"Marcus?" one of them called out, his voice trembling slightly. He raised his short sword, stepping cautiously toward the thick brush. "Hey, man, this isn’t funny. Come out."

A heavy object dropped from the canopy above, splashing directly into the muddy water between them.

The two trainees scrambled backward, aiming their weapons at the water. It was not a monster. It was Marcus’s heavy silver chest plate, entirely stripped off his body, alongside his communication rune and his token pouch.

"Where is he?" the second trainee yelled, pure panic setting in as he looked up into the dark, twisting branches of the mangrove trees.

A blur of absolute darkness dropped directly behind him.

Liam materialized flawlessly from the ’Shadow Step’, completely bypassing their defensive stances. He struck the back of the first boy’s knees, sending him crashing into the mud, and simultaneously drove a precise, open-handed strike into the second boy’s solar plexus.

The fight lasted exactly four seconds.

Liam worked with terrifying efficiency.

He stripped them of their token pouches, their communication runes, and their primary weapons. He did not leave them on the ground. Using a length of highly durable synthetic vine he found nearby, he securely tied all three unconscious trainees upside down, dangling them from a sturdy branch twenty feet in the air.

He stood at the base of the tree, casually tossing the three golden tokens into his own sleek pouch.

[Ding!]

[Stealth Takedown Successful. ]

[Current Token Count: 3. Julian Vance’s happiness level: Declining.]

[Keep up the good work. Vespera is currently watching the broadcast and trying very hard not to look impressed.]

Meanwhile, up in the luxury VIP boxes hovering above the physical arena floor, Director Vance was staring at the massive holographic screens in utter confusion.

The screens displayed a live map of the competitors, represented by glowing dots. The Vanguard Guild dots were supposed to be converging on the center. Instead, three of his dots had simply gone gray, indicating they had been eliminated and were awaiting extraction by the medical drones.

Vespera Nocturne sat in the viewing box directly across the aisle from him. She was sipping a glass of sparkling water, her legs elegantly crossed. Liora sat beside her, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, watching the screens with bated breath.

"Did a high-tier monster ambush team four?" Director Vance barked into his communication headset, his face flushing with anger. "Show me the camera feed for sector seven!"

The main screen shifted, displaying the swamp sector.

The crowd in the arena erupted into massive laughter. The camera clearly showed the three Vanguard trainees dangling completely upside down by their ankles, stripped of their gear and totally unconscious.

There was absolutely no monster in sight. There was no sign of a struggle. There was only a single, faint wisp of freezing black mist dissolving into the humid air.

Vespera set her water glass down.

She pressed her lips firmly together, aggressively suppressing the sharp, genuinely delighted smile fighting to break across her face.

The Shadow Sovereign was officially on the hunt.
