The ground of the First Great Continent was forged from overlapping plates of cast iron, rusted at the edges and coated in a thin sheen of oily soot. When footsteps struck the floor of the Plain of Iron Souls, the sound was not dirt crunching, but hollow metal vibrating at a low hum that traveled up through shoe soles to the teeth.

The air reeked of burnt iron filings and dried blood.

The creature blocking the path between two towers of crushed scrap possessed four jointed limbs shaped like scissor blades and a torso encased in plates of black armor. There were no eyes on its square skull, only an exhaust grille venting a continuous hiss of pressurized steam.Full novel: Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea] — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

[Entity: Scrap Burrower (Tier 2).]

[Level: 16.]

[Health Points: 180/180.]

"Its shell is thick," Maria warned, dropping her weight into a low crouch.

She gripped the carbon steel bar with both hands, holding the leather wrap level with her hips. Her six-foot-three frame stood squared, cutting off direct line of sight between the monster and Dante.

"The chest plating is cold-forged," Dante said four paces behind her, palms spread low and three rings of runic chalk glowing around his shoes. "The weak point sits in the hinge bushings on the front right leg. Upkeep oil leaks from there whenever it torques its torso."

The Burrower vented a blast of superheated steam through its facial grille and lunged forward. Its bladed legs drummed against the iron floorplates in a flurry of dull clangs spitting reddish sparks.

Maria did not wait for the charge.

[Rapid Intervention activated.]

She closed the gap in half a second, intercepting the beast in the center of the lane. Rather than trying to take the six-hundred-pound monster head-on, she swept her steel bar upward in an arc, leveraging the raw mass of her twenty-six Strength to parry the front right blade mid-strike.

Steel crashed against the jointed claw with a deafening clang.

The monster was knocked two feet off course, laying bare its flank where an iron piston gleamed coated in black grease.

"Now, Dante!"

[Casting: Concentrated Aether Dart.]

[Mana Cost: 25 points.]

[Current Reserve: 185/210.]

Dante thrust forward two extended fingers. Three beads of blue light merged at his fingertips, lancing out in a fine straight beam that sliced through the air in dead silence.

The bolt did not hit the outer plating. It slipped straight through the one-inch gap between the steam piston and the monster's chassis.

Arcane energy detonated inside the creature's compression chamber.

The Scrap Burrower let out a high-pitched shriek as internal steam hissed violently through ruptures across its plating, spraying scalding oil over the iron deck. The beast lost support in its front limb, toppling onto its side with a heavy thud that rattled the surrounding scrap towers.

Maria followed through without hesitation. She vaulted onto the downed monster's flank, hauled the steel bar overhead with both hands, and brought the blunt end down squarely onto the square head's exhaust grille.

CRASH.

The iron plate caved inward, crushing pistons and cogs under twenty-six points of raw force. The creature's hissing died out. Thick black smoke billowed from the breach, and its jointed limbs went slack, rattling against the metal deck.

[-95 HP to target.]

[Scrap Burrower Health Points: 0/180.]

Silence fell.

Maria stepped off the crushed carcass, wiping a splatter of black oil from her shorts with the back of her gloved hand.

"That dart through the piston was dead on," she noted, propping the bar on her shoulder. "If you hadn't popped that pressure chamber, I would've needed five more swings to crack this hull."

Dante did not answer. He remained frozen at the center of the chalk circle, eyes glued to the glowing screen that had unfolded before his face with unusually dense luminescence.

[Level Maturation Threshold reached!]

[Congratulations. You have reached Level 15.]

[Tier Transition: Consolidation of the Second Soul Rank.]

A wave of heat unlike anything he had felt over the past seven years erupted in the center of his chest.

It was not the chilly hum of ordinary ether, nor the dull ache of his congenital physical frailty. It was a dense, clean torrent that rushed up his throat and coursed into his marrow with the force of a river bursting an earthen dam.

Dante dropped to his knees on the rusted iron plates.

[Structural Attribute Recalculation (Tier Leap):]

[Intelligence: 24 -> 30 (+6)]

[Wisdom: 18 -> 23 (+5)]

[Carisma: 14 -> 19 (+5)]

[Strength: 07 -> 08 (+1)]

[Constitution: 08 -> 09 (+1)]

[Total Mana Reserve: 210 -> 380 (+170)]

His mind expanded. The sensory shift was sharp and overwhelming. He could hear the faint grit of dust settling onto scrap metal fifty yards away. He could gauge the precise density of the sulfurous air around his skin and calculate the exact seconds required for his Mana to replenish every spent droplet.

The physical weakness in his limbs remained, his Strength had ticked up by only one point to eight, and Constitution to nine. Yet the gap between him and Maria had shifted its nature.

She was the mountain of impact, the living fortress checking six hundred pounds on bare iron. He was the nerve center, the conduit of energy who now wielded enough Mana to hold barriers up for hours and calculate strike trajectories before beasts could even finish their first step.

They complemented one another with the precision of two cogs carved from the same stone.

Yet the system did not halt at numerical values.

A gold-bordered notice, starkly distinct from the standard gray windows, pulsed directly in the center of his retina.

[Warning: Overload on Primordial Soul Matrix.]

[Wisdom expansion has reached critical resonance threshold.]

[Partial breach of biological containment underway.]

"Dante?" Maria's voice rang out, stripped of its casual edge. She took two quick strides toward him, dropping her steel bar to the floor. "What is it? Did that thing spray poison on you?"

Dante could not speak. Breath jammed behind his teeth.

A searing heat flared right between his shoulder blades. It wasn't muscular strain. It was the sensation of two thick bone wedges being thrust outward from beneath his flesh, stretching the fabric of his black t-shirt against the heavy leather jacket.

"Take... the jacket off..." Dante managed to force out between clenched teeth, sweat streaming down his forehead onto the iron deck.

Maria asked no questions. She seized the collar of his jacket with both hands and wrenched downward with the full leverage of her twenty-six Strength. The metal zipper sheared apart with a loud pop, and the jacket tumbled to the oily floor.

Dante's black shirt had already torn open down the center of his spine.

Two skeletal protrusions had pierced through the fabric, expanding beneath taut skin. The flesh did not bleed in crimson ribbons. Where the skin parted, a clean light, the warm hue of antique gold, filtered through the seams of his pores.

The structures spread outward, unfurling with the crisp snap of fresh cartilage and tendons locking into his vertebrae.

In less than ten seconds, two additional appendages flared out behind Dante's shoulders.

They were wings.

They bore none of the dark, leathery hide of the bat-like wings typical of hell's denizens, nor the hooked talons at the joint folds. They were layered in dense rows of rigid feathers of near-pure ivory, their slender edges catching and diffusing a gentle gleam in the dead continent's murky air.

The wings were not titanic, spanning roughly five feet from tip to tip when spread wide, holding firm behind his back.

When the plain's hot draft brushed against the plumage, volcanic ash and metallic soot failed to cling. The dark particles slid harmlessly around the pale surfaces, as though an invisible ward cast off the grime of the realm.

Dante planted both palms flat against the iron plating, dragging air into his lungs as the burning ache along his back finally ebbed, leaving behind a strange sensation of fresh, balanced weight centered along his spine.

An old prompt, unseen since the day of his birth, rose from the depths of the interface.

[Progress updated: 0% -> 5%.]

[Biological status altered: Primordial Trait [Winged Vestige] manifested.]

[Passive effect: Affinity with etheric forces increased by 20%. Mana cost for support skills reduced by 15%.]

Maria stepped back. The carbon steel bar resting on her shoulder dropped a few inches, its tip nearly brushing the rusted deck.

Her brown eyes were locked onto the white feathers shifting faintly, rising and falling in rhythm with Dante's breathing.

"Dante," she called, her voice low, almost cautious, an extreme rarity for her.

Dante lifted his head slowly, wiping acidic saliva from his chin. He could feel the new limbs. They were not numb appendages strapped to his back, he could command them as naturally as his own fingers. With a focused thought, the plumage tucked tight against his shoulder blades, folding flat across the muscles of his back.

"I'm fine," he said, his tone clearer and firmer than ever.

"Fine?" Maria aimed her index finger at the ivory feathers still shedding a faint sheen beneath the plain's black smoke. "You just sprouted two white wings in the middle of Hell, boy. Where the hell did that come from?"

Dante sat on the iron floor, reaching his right hand over his shoulder to brush the tip of a pinion.

The texture was firm like drawn steel, yet smooth to the touch, radiating a steady warmth that warded off the metallic chill of the Plain of Iron Souls.

He looked at the five percent notification on his hidden quest, recalling the words that man in the white jacket had spoken to Maria years ago in the dark bedroom of her home: That kid is stubborn because he does not remember who he used to be. His soul has an old debt to collect.

"I don't know where they came from," Dante replied, meeting the widened eyes of his partner. "But I think the reason I was born with this screen in my head is finally starting to show."

Maria looked at the spotless feathers, then out across the iron wrecks and sludge rivers surrounding them in that damned realm.

She slowly shook her head, let out a short, dry chuckle through her nose, and rested the steel bar back across her broad shoulder.

"Wonderful," she grumbled, reaching down a hand to haul him off the floor. "Now on top of carrying you on my back so you don't turn into monster chow, I'm going to have to find shirts with back slits so you don't keep ripping my old clothes.”
