The digital clock in the kitchen read fifteen minutes to midnight when Dante's bedroom door shut with the click of a latch.

The boy had barely managed to stow the vials of basilisk sap on the reagent shelf before exhaustion claimed its due. The breakthrough to Level 15, paired with the sheer mental strain of folding the ivory wings back into his soul matrix, had depleted the last reserves of his frail frame. He had thrown himself onto the bed fully dressed, passing out before even drawing the sheet over his legs.

In the spacious living room, Maria finished working a thin coat of synthetic grease into the seam of the steel bar's grip.Full novel: Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea] — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

She wore loose gray sweatpants and a black tank top that displayed her broad shoulders and arms corded from relentless physical training. She put the grease tub away in the tool drawer, scrubbed her hands at the kitchen sink with lye soap until the scent of mineral oil washed clean, and walked over to the enclosed balcony of tempered glass.

The lights of the human city sprawled below in straight grids of yellow streetlamps and distant headlights.

The glass pane felt cold beneath her fingertips.

"You grew a lot taller than I projected, kiddo."

The voice came from behind, drifting from the center of the training floor.

Maria did not flinch. At seventeen and boasting twenty-eight Constitution, her reflexes did not trigger in childish panic. She turned slowly, resting her back against the balcony glass, hands loose by her thighs, ready to snap into the contraction of [Lead Impact] if the need arose.

The man in the white jacket was sitting on the bench press.

One of his long legs was stretched out before him, elbow resting on his bent knee, those same spotless white sneakers planted upon the polished wood floor. The light jacket carried not a single speck of dust, and he rolled a wooden toothpick between his teeth with the exact same careless ease as seven years ago.

Only the golden rings rimming his irises shone slightly brighter in the dark of the unlit room.

"Seven years without showing your face," Maria said, her voice dropping deep, completely devoid of deference. "Figured you got reassigned to a different department."

"Bureaucracy moves slow upstairs, Maria." The man let out a dry chuckle through his nose without dropping the toothpick. "Lots of souls being born, lots tumbling into the wrong pits. But I kept an eye on your reports. Must say, you took good care of the kid's husk. Took him longer than I anticipated to crack the first shell, but he reached Level 15 in one piece."

"He sprouted two white wings this morning in the First Great Continent," she stepped off the balcony, stopping ten feet from the bench press. Her height now allowed her to meet his gaze almost level. "Real feathered wings. Right in the middle of all that iron and grease."

The man's grin faded for a moment. He plucked the toothpick from his teeth with thumb and forefinger, inspecting its point before looking up at the girl.

"I know."

"What is he?" Maria asked, cutting straight to the chase. "He claims he doesn't know, but his soul has had that origin quest locked down since the day he was born. He carries a human name, has a lazy father and a mother who only watches television, but no human in this city sheds feathers that glow in the dark."

"He is what remains of an ancient storm," the man murmured, his voice carrying a gravity that defied his slouching posture. "His mortal vessel was tailored to mask the trail. When his soul was thrust into that body with four Strength and four Constitution, that was the entire point: make him look so insignificant, so broken, that no one on the other side would ever suspect who was drawing breath in that suburban crib."

He rose from the bench press without a whisper of sound. On his feet, he stood barely an inch taller than Maria, yet his presence saturated the room with a density that seemed to press the very air against the walls.

"Except the kid is stubborn," the fellow went on. "He wasn't content to sit around playing video games and eating cold rice. He leveraged the system to force the pace. He stepped into Hell, culled beasts, stacked Mana, and now his arcane channels have shattered the first biological bolt. The wings are just the beginning of his old form bleeding through."

Maria held her head high, brown eyes locked onto his.

"And what's the issue with that?"

"The issue, kiddo, is that Hell has ears." The man stepped toward her, coming to a halt three feet away. "That Fourth Minor Continent where you spent the last few years is a dumping ground. The demons there are weak, the damned souls are ignorant, and the governors care only about levying mining taxes. Nobody bats an eye at two runts hunting lizards on the roadside."

He motioned with the toothpick toward the closed door of Dante's room.

"The Plain of Iron Souls, however, is guarded ground. It's the First of the Nine Greats. Iron Legion garrisons march the highways, and Third Ring tracking hounds sniff out every scrap of pure energy that doesn't belong to that damned soil. If one of those feathers touches the deck and an iron captain finds it, the hunt begins that very afternoon."

Maria clenched her fists, the tendons in her forearms ridging beneath the skin.

"If a captain comes, I'll snap his armor in half."

The fellow let out an easy laugh, shaking his head in genuine amusement.

"You've got backbone, Maria. I knew I picked the right kid in that alley. But you have twenty-eight Constitution and you're sitting at Level 17. An Iron Legion captain is Level 40, wears plate quenched in giant blood, and carries four hundred hit points. He'd squash you into the floorplates before you finish drawing breath for your first swing."

He snapped the fingers of his right hand.

The click chimed directly inside Maria's skull. A silver window unfolded before her eyes, while an identical line of script flared through the wood of Dante's bedroom door, lighting his interface even in the depths of slumber.

[Shared Binding Quest Activated.]

[Origin: Higher Authority (Causal Preservation Sector).]

[Title: Forging the Ash Veil.]

[Primary Objective: Retrieve a Primordial Iron Core from the depths of the Black Smelter in the First Great Continent.]

[Secondary Objective: Construct a runic containment matrix capable of sealing the etheric radiance of the [Winged Vestige] trait.]

[Time Limit: 30 Earth days.]

[Reward for Maria: Access to Sentinel Tier 3, Heavy Concussion Skill Unlock.]

[Reward for Dante: Matrix Stabilization, Passive Concealment of Divine Trait.]

[Failure Penalty: Planar camouflage collapse. Immediate notification sent to First Great Continent tracking forces.]

Maria read the text with sharp focus, searing every clause into her memory.

"The Black Smelter," she repeated the name. "Dante brought that place up last week. Said it's an automated fortress in the center of the plain where ancient machines have been melting scrap since the last ring war."

"Right on the mark," the man confirmed, slipping his hands into his pockets. "The core you need is housed in the primary boiler. It's a block of pure iron that has drunk infernal ash for five hundred years. If Dante weaves that ore into his chalk circuits, he can forge a seal that smothers the wings. They stay tucked away inside, and the light won't leak through his flesh even if he burns through every drop of Mana he has."

"And if we don't go?"

"If you don't go, on the thirty-first day a pack of sulfur hounds will batter down the hatch of that dry fissure where you stash your air mattresses," the man offered a humorless smirk. "They won't ask for papers. They'll tear Dante apart, haul his soul to the Ninth Continent in a lead cage, and you'll go right back to being an impoverished orphan girl in a gray slum, except your head will be crammed with memories of beasts no one on Earth will ever believe exist."

Maria looked at the silver screen, then at the bedroom door where Dante slept.

The thought of returning to being just an ordinary girl, waiting for her mother to trudge home from the mill and dodging puddles in potholed asphalt, stirred instant revulsion in her gut. She had tasted the weight of shattering bone with her own bare hands. She had learned to channel Mana into the joints of her fingers, and she had accumulated enough cash to purchase an entire apartment complex if she so chose.

She wasn't taking a single step backward.

"We're getting that piece of iron," she said, her voice dry and resolved.

"I know you will." The fellow took two paces back, his form starting to fade into the weak light filtering through the balcony glass. "Wake bighead early tomorrow. Explain what's on the line. The kid has a sharp mind for charting routes, but he'll need you to be the sledgehammer more than ever on this drop."

He raised two fingers in a casual farewell.

"Until the delivery drops, Maria. Don't make me have to hike down there to scrape pieces of you two off the furnace floor."

The man simply vanished. The cool morning air trailing him dissipated in that same second, leaving behind only the quiet hum of the refrigerator and the distant scent of light rain settling over the streets of the Acacias district.

Maria drew a deep breath, turned her back on the empty living room, and walked to the kitchen for another glass of cold water.

Tomorrow, the work would start early.
