*LORD OF DESTINY: Chapter 19 : Split Thread
Kael looked at the rope on his wrist. Two tugs. Two different directions.
And between them, fourteen kids who were finally starting to feel safe.
“We can’t wait,” Lyra said. “If someone else is pulling back, they’re moving too.”
Kael knelt in the mud. The fourteen kids sat in a circle. Even Nira. Even Toven. Even Mara, who still flinched every time someone raised their voice.
“New lesson,” Kael said. “Sometimes the braid has to split. But it never breaks.”
He touched the rope. It split in his hands. Not in two. In two braids.
Seven threads went to his wrist. Seven went to Lyra’s.
The kids gasped. The knot in the Spire, miles away, pulsed twice. Once for each group.
“North-east with me,” Kael said. “South with Lyra.”
Mira immediately grabbed Kael’s coat. “I’m with Teacher.”
Toven did too. And three others.
Nira looked between Kael and Lyra. Then she took Lyra’s hand. “You held me,” she said quietly. “I’ll go with you.”
Lyra’s face softened. She squeezed Nira’s hand.
Mara stepped to Lyra’s group. “I... I should help,” she said. “I know what the other ones do.”
That made 7 and 7.
Kael stood. “Rules. Small pulls only. No big ones. If it’s dangerous, you run and you pull for the other group. Got it?”
Fourteen heads nodded.
“Two weeks,” Kael said. “We meet back at the Spire. No matter what.”
They split at dawn.
*GROUP 1: KAEL - NORTH-EAST*
The land got cold fast. Black rock. No trees.
The tug was stronger here. Angry.
On the third day they found it.
A fortress. No flag. No people on the walls. Just one tower, and on top of it, a cage.
And in the cage, a boy. Maybe 10.
And standing below him, three people. All with white eyes. All with spindles.
They hadn’t started yet. They were waiting.
One of them looked up and saw Kael. She smiled.
“Lord Veyr,” she called. “We wondered when you’d come. We have one. Do you have the rest?”
Kael didn’t answer. He felt the seven threads behind him lift.
The boy in the cage looked down. His eyes met Kael’s.
And he mouthed one word: _Run._
*GROUP 2: LYRA - SOUTH*
The Salt Marshes gave way to green hills. Warm. Loud.
The crying here wasn’t angry. It was quiet. Resigned.
They found her in a temple. Alone.
A girl. Maybe 8. Sitting in the middle of the floor.
And around her, drawn in salt, was a circle. Inside the circle: nothing. No threads. No fate.
Like someone had cut a hole in the world.
The girl looked up at Lyra. “Are you here to take me too?” she asked.
Nira ran to her and hugged her. “No! We’re here to bring you home!”
The girl stared. “Home? I don’t have a home. They cut it out.”
Lyra knelt. “What’s your name?”
The girl thought about it. “...Ella.”
Behind them, the temple doors creaked open.
Footsteps.
More than one.
A voice called out. “Ah. You found her before us. How convenient.”
