The final bell rang at 3:20 in the afternoon.

Seraphina Kalhari closed her notebook, slipped her pen between its pages, and leaned back in her chair.

Around her, the classroom immediately came alive.Full novel: LOTM:Lady of the Mysteries — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Chairs moved.

Bags were packed.

Someone near the window was already complaining about tomorrow’s mathematics assignment, while two girls in the row ahead were arguing over which restaurant to visit after school.

Seraphina listened for a moment before standing.

Nothing unusual.

Just another school day.

She walked out of the classroom with the rest of the students, passing through the school’s glass corridor.

Beyond the transparent walls, the city stretched toward the horizon beneath a pale afternoon sky.

She stopped for a second.

The sky was unusually clear today.

From here, she could see the faint silver line of an orbital elevator far beyond the city.

Seraphina had seen it thousands of times.

Everyone had.

It had become so ordinary that most people didn’t even look up anymore.

That was probably the strangest thing about the world she had been born into.

Humanity had once looked at the stars and wondered whether anyone lived there.

Now humanity lived among them.

There were cities in orbit.

Research stations on the Moon.

Mining colonies scattered throughout the solar system.

Exploration vessels traveling farther than the generations before them had ever imagined possible.

The Solar System was no longer the boundary of human civilization.

It was merely its backyard.

And humanity wanted to go farther.

Much farther.

Seraphina walked through the school entrance and stepped onto the pavement.

Her transportation notification appeared automatically on the thin display embedded in her wrist.

ARRIVAL: 4 MINUTES.

She dismissed it with a flick of her finger.

Four minutes was nothing.

She started walking anyway.

The streets were busy.

Autonomous vehicles moved almost silently between lanes.

Delivery drones crossed overhead.

Advertisements floated above buildings in translucent projections, changing according to whoever happened to look at them.

It was an impressive world.

Humanity had conquered diseases that once killed millions.

Extended the average human lifespan.

Built machines capable of performing work that would have required thousands of people centuries ago.

Reached places that had existed only in imagination.

And yet…

People were becoming afraid again.

Seraphina glanced toward the sky.

She had been hearing the same stories for months.

Another exploration vessel had disappeared.

Then another.

Some never sent a final transmission.

Some sent signals that nobody could understand.

And occasionally, one came back.

Those were the stories people didn’t like discussing.

Ships returning without parts of their hull.

Navigation systems showing locations that did not exist.

Crew members who could no longer recognize their own families.

People who stared at empty corners of rooms for hours.

People who claimed they had seen something outside the ship.

Something enormous.

Something that shouldn’t have been there.

The official reports called these incidents unknown space-related anomalies.

The news channels used more comfortable words.

Equipment failure.

Psychological stress.

Navigation errors.

Human mistakes.

Seraphina didn’t completely believe them.

Not because she knew what was happening.

She didn’t.

That was precisely the problem.

There were too many things happening that nobody understood.

And the stranger part was that it wasn’t only happening in space anymore.

There had been reports on Earth too.

A lake that supposedly reflected a sky that wasn’t there.

A research facility where every clock stopped at exactly the same second.

A village where people claimed they had heard voices coming from underground.

Most of those stories disappeared within a few days.

Some were proven false.

Others were quietly removed.

And a few…

A few were never explained.

Seraphina had noticed something else.

People were beginning to use a strange word whenever these incidents were discussed.

Weird.

Not dangerous.

Not impossible.

Just…

Weird.

As if the world itself had become slightly unfamiliar.

She smiled faintly.

Maybe that was what happened when humanity became too ambitious.

For thousands of years, humans had looked toward the unknown and dreamed about reaching it.

Now they had reached it.

And perhaps the unknown had noticed them.

Her transportation finally arrived.

Seraphina stepped inside.

The door closed behind her.

As the vehicle pulled away from the school, she rested her head against the window and watched the city disappear behind her.

She wasn’t afraid.

Not yet.

She was simply curious.

After all, she had always believed that there was an explanation for everything.

You only needed enough information to find it.

Outside the window, the afternoon sky slowly darkened.

And far above the atmosphere, beyond the orbit of the Moon, something moved among the stars.

Something that no human telescope had yet learned how to see.

Seraphina didn’t know it.

But the world she had inherited was already beginning to end.
