Tyler swung first.
The bat came in low and fast. A horizontal arc aimed at Damien’s ribs. Without the adrenaline boost it would have connected. With it, Damien’s body moved before his brain caught up.
He dropped low. The bat whistled over his head. Close enough to feel the air move. Tyler’s momentum carried him sideways. Off balance. Open.
Damien drove his fist into Tyler’s stomach. Right below the sternum. The Body Enhancement Pill had given him strength 7. Not superhuman. But enough. Tyler doubled over. The bat clattered to the floor.
[Hit registered. Target Tyler Knox. Damage: Moderate. Stamina cost: 3%.]
[Adrenaline boost: 86 seconds remaining.]
One down. Three seconds used. Three more to go.
Pipe guy came next. He was tall and wiry. Swung the pipe overhead like a hammer. Telegraphed. Sloppy. Drunk.
Damien sidestepped. The pipe hit the marble floor with a sharp crack that echoed through the bar. Sparks flew. Damien grabbed the guy’s wrist. Twisted. The pipe fell free. Then he shoved him hard into the nearest wall.
The guy hit the wall shoulder first. A wet crunch. He screamed and slid to the floor. Done.
[Hit registered. Target Hostile #2. Damage: Severe. Target incapacitated.]
[Adrenaline boost: 71 seconds remaining.]
Chain guy was smarter. He didn’t charge. He circled. The chain swung in a loose figure eight. Keeping distance. Looking for an opening.
The fourth guy. The unarmed one. He moved to Damien’s left. Trying to flank. Two angles. Two threats.
[Hostile #3: Chain. Caution level: High.]
[Hostile #4: Unarmed. Caution level: Low.]
Chain guy swung. A lateral whip aimed at Damien’s head. He ducked. The chain caught a bottle on the shelf behind him. Glass exploded. Whiskey rained down.
Unarmed guy lunged from the left. Damien caught him with a forearm to the chest. Stopped his momentum dead. Then he headbutted him.
Bone on bone. The crack was audible. Unarmed guy’s eyes went blank. He stumbled backward. Blood poured from his nose. He dropped to his knees. Then to his face.
[Hit registered. Target Hostile #4. Damage: Severe. Target incapacitated.]
[Adrenaline boost: 54 seconds remaining.]
Two down. Two to go. But Tyler was back up.
He’d grabbed the bat from the floor. His face was twisted with pain and rage. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth where Damien’s punch had split his lip.
"You’re dead," Tyler spat. "You’re fucking dead."
Tyler and chain guy moved together now. Coordinated. Bat from the right. Chain from the left. A pincer.
[Host Stamina: 58%. Adrenaline boost: 48 seconds remaining.]
[System recommendation: Do not engage both simultaneously. Eliminate one target quickly.]
Chain guy whipped the chain first. Damien grabbed a bar stool. Metal legs. Same weapon he’d used in Mia’s apartment. Muscle memory.
He caught the chain in the stool legs. Wrapped it around. Yanked. Chain guy stumbled forward. Damien swung the stool into his ribs.
The crack was sickening. Not bone. Cartilage. Ribs bending past their limit. Chain guy folded. Dropped the chain. Hit the floor gasping.
[Hit registered. Target Hostile #3. Damage: Severe. Target incapacitated.]
[Adrenaline boost: 31 seconds remaining.]
Three down. One to go.
Tyler stood alone. Bat in hand. His three friends on the floor around him. One holding his shoulder. One holding his face. One holding his ribs.
The bar was silent. No music. No talking. Just the sound of heavy breathing and the distant wail of sirens.
Tyler looked at his friends. Then at Damien. Then at the bat in his hands. The calculation was visible on his face. The math of a man realizing he’s lost.
But Tyler wasn’t good at math.
He charged. Bat raised high. A berserker rage. No technique. No strategy. Just fury.
[Adrenaline boost: 18 seconds remaining.]
Damien didn’t dodge. He stepped forward. Into the swing. Inside the arc of the bat. Where the power was weakest.
His left hand caught Tyler’s wrist. The bat stopped mid-swing. His right hand grabbed Tyler’s collar. Then he drove his knee into Tyler’s groin.
Tyler’s eyes bulged. The bat fell from his fingers. His mouth opened but no sound came out. Just a silent exhale of pure agony.
Damien let go. Tyler crumpled to the floor. Curled into a ball. Hands between his legs. Tears streaming down his face.
[Hit registered. Target Tyler Knox. Damage: Severe. Target incapacitated.]
[Emergency Quest: Survive the encounter. COMPLETE.]
[Adrenaline boost expired.]
[Host Stamina: 22%. Fatigue setting in.]
Four men on the floor. Surrounding Damien. The bar was destroyed. Broken glass. Shattered bottles. Blood on the marble. A bar stool bent out of shape.
The sirens were getting closer. Red and blue lights flickered through the windows. The crowd outside had doubled. Every phone was pointed at the scene inside.
Mia ran from behind the bar. She threw her arms around Damien. Squeezed him so tight his ribs ached.
"You idiot," she whispered. "You absolute idiot."
"Nice to see you too."
"You could have been killed."
"Could have. Wasn’t."
She pulled back. Her eyes were red. Her hands were shaking. She looked at the men on the floor. Then at Damien. Then at the destruction around them.
"Marcus is going to kill us," she said.
"Marcus is going to have bigger problems," Damien replied. He pointed at the windows. The police cars were pulling up outside. Two squad cars. Four officers.
[Threat update: Law enforcement arriving.]
[Host is not at fault. Self-defense is documented by security cameras.]
[Security footage will confirm Host was not the aggressor.]
Security cameras. The Vault had them. Four of them. Covering every angle. Every swing. Every punch. Every weapon. All on tape.
The officers entered with hands on their holsters. They assessed the scene quickly. Four men on the floor. One man standing. Staff against the wall. Damage everywhere.
"Who started this?" the lead officer asked.
Marcus stepped forward. His voice was steady but pale. "They did. Four men entered with weapons. My employee defended himself and my staff."
The officer looked at Damien. Then at Tyler on the floor. Then at the bat. The pipe. The chain.
"Hands behind your back," the officer said to Damien.
"What? I was defending—"
"Standard procedure. We need to sort this out. Hands behind your back."
[Host is being detained. This is standard protocol for incidents involving multiple injuries.]
[Estimated processing time: 2-4 hours.]
The cuffs were cold. Tight. Clicked into place with a finality that made his stomach drop. The officer led him toward the door.
As they passed the window, he saw the crowd outside. Phones up. Screens glowing. His face was being broadcast live to however many people were watching.
And standing at the back of the crowd. Arms crossed. Phone in hand. Recording.
Chad Sterling.
He was smiling. Not the fake grin he used at parties. A real smile. The smile of a man watching a problem solve itself.
[Chad Sterling. Emotional state: Satisfied. He did not orchestrate this but he is benefiting from it.]
[Social threat level: Rising.]
The officer put Damien in the back of the squad car. The door closed. The window separated him from the world. Through the glass, he could see Mia talking to another officer. Crying. Gesturing. Telling the story.
He could see Marcus on his phone. Probably calling a lawyer. Or the owner. Or both.
He could see Tyler being loaded onto a stretcher. The other three followed. Ambulances had arrived. The paramedics worked efficiently.
And he could see something else. Across the street. Leaning against a black Tesla.
Victoria Ashford.
She hadn’t been there when he arrived. She must have come when she heard. Or when she saw the social media posts. Because of course there were social media posts. There were always social media posts.
She stood across the street. Phone at her side. Not recording. Just watching. Her blue eyes locked onto the squad car. Onto him.
Their eyes met through the glass.
[Victoria Ashford. Curiosity: 69% → 73%. Trust: 6% → 9%. Suspicion: 44% → 41%.]
Seventy-three percent curiosity. He’d crossed the threshold. Stage 2.
[MAIN QUEST STAGE 2 UNLOCKED.]
[Stage 2: Intrigue. Victoria Ashford’s curiosity has exceeded 70%. She will now actively seek engagement with Host.]
[Stage 2 Objective: Victoria Ashford must initiate direct personal contact with Host outside of professional settings.]
[Reward for Stage 2 completion: +500 EXP, +$5000, Unlock Skill: Arousal Spike]
[Note: Victoria Ashford must initiate. Host cannot force this stage.]
She had to come to him. He couldn’t push or seduce. He had to wait for the ice queen to make the first move.
The squad car pulled away from The Vault. The crowd parted. The lights faded. The bar disappeared in the rearview mirror.
Damien leaned his head against the cold window and closed his eyes.

He’d leveled up again. In the back of a police car. After beating up four men. On camera. In front of half of LA Crest University.
The system didn’t care about context. It only cared about results.
[Processing level up...]
[Level: 3 → 4]
[Stat points awarded: +2]
[New System Shop items unlocked.]
[Host is advised to allocate stat points upon release from custody.]
The police station was twenty minutes away. Damien spent the ride in silence. The officer driving didn’t talk. The partition was up. Just him and the hum of the engine and the blue glow of system notifications in his vision.
At the station, they put him in a holding cell. Small. Concrete bench. Metal toilet. The smell of bleach and despair. They took his phone. His wallet. His belt. Everything except his clothes.
He sat on the bench. Alone. The holding cell was empty except for him.
[Host is in custody. Estimated release time: 2-3 hours.]
[Security footage from The Vault is being reviewed.]
[Host’s actions are classified as self-defense under California Penal Code 198.5.]
[Probability of charges: 4%.]
Four percent. His luck stat was 4. Maybe it would help. Maybe it wouldn’t. He had no control either way.
He sat in the cell for two hours. No phone. No system interface. Just concrete walls and fluorescent lights that buzzed like dying insects.
At midnight, an officer appeared.
"Black. You’re free to go. Camera footage confirms self-defense. The DA declined to press charges. Your employer posted bail."
Bail. Marcus had posted bail. That meant Marcus still wanted him around. Or at least didn’t want the lawsuit that would come from abandoning an employee.
Damien collected his belongings. Phone. Wallet. Belt. The phone powered on instantly. Infinite battery. The system interface flooded back.
[Welcome back Host.]
[Time absent: 2 hours and 14 minutes.]
[3 missed calls from Mia.]
[4 missed calls from Chloe.]
[1 missed call from Ashley.]
[1 missed call from Unknown.]
The unknown number again. They’d called while he was in custody. They were watching. Always watching.
He stepped out of the police station into the LA night. The air was cool. The streets were quiet. His body ached everywhere. The adrenaline crash was hitting hard.
He checked his messages.
Mia: Are you okay? Please tell me you’re okay.
Mia: They took you in a police car. I saw. Everyone saw.
Mia: Marcus posted bail. He’s actually a decent human being apparently.
Mia: I’m at home. Come over. Please.
Chloe: I SAW THE VIDEO. YOU’RE IN JAIL??
Chloe: DAMIEN ANSWER YOUR PHONE.
Chloe: I’m calling the station.
Chloe: They said you’re being released. I’m coming to get you. WHERE ARE YOU?
Ashley: Sophia sent me the video. Is that you? Are you hurt? This story is hosted at g.com.
Ashley: Please answer.
He started with Chloe.
Damien: I’m out. I’m fine. Don’t come. I’m going home.
Chloe: Don’t come? DON’T COME? You were in a police car Damien. On camera. Fighting four guys. Again.
Damien: Self-defense. No charges. I’m fine.
Chloe: You are NOT fine. You are the opposite of fine. I’m coming over.
Damien: Chloe. It’s midnight. I’m tired. I’m going to sleep. I’ll come to you tomorrow.
Chloe: ...
Chloe: You better be alive tomorrow or I’m killing you myself.
Then Ashley.
Damien: I’m okay. Self-defense. Released already. No charges.
Ashley: Thank God. I was terrified.
Ashley: The video is everywhere Damien. It has 50,000 views already.
Ashley: You took out four guys. By yourself. How is that possible?
Damien: Adrenaline.
Ashley: That’s not adrenaline. That’s something else entirely.
Ashley: We need to talk. Tomorrow.
Damien: I know. Tomorrow.
Then Mia.
Damien: I’m out. I’m okay. Going home to sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.
Mia: Thank God. I was so scared.
Mia: Damien. Tyler had a bat again. He came back with a bat. For you.
Mia: If you hadn’t been there...
Damien: I was there. That’s what matters.
Mia: I know. But I’m tired of being the reason you get hurt.
Damien: You’re not the reason. Tyler is the reason.
Mia: Goodnight Damien.
He put his phone away and started walking home. The streets were empty. 1 a.m. on a Monday. LA was finally quiet.
His body was breaking down. Every muscle screamed. His knuckles were swollen. His ribs ached where Tyler’s bat had grazed him during the first swing. He needed sleep. Real sleep. Not the restless four hours he’d been surviving on.
But his mind wouldn’t stop.
The video. Fifty thousand views. By morning it would be a hundred thousand. Maybe more. He was no longer the barback meme. He was the barback who fought four men with weapons and won.
Victoria Ashford had watched him get arrested. And her curiosity had crossed the threshold. Stage 2 was unlocked. She would come to him now. On her terms. In her time.
The anonymous texter had called during his arrest. Watching. Always watching. They knew things. They had a system. And they were playing a different game than his.
And Chloe. His anchor. His best friend. She was one day into her one-week ultimatum. And he’d already been arrested. The clock was ticking.
He reached his apartment. Climbed the stairs. Opened the door. Same rice bowl. Same cracked ceiling. Same drip.
He sat on the bed and allocated his stat points.
[Purchase: +1 Strength (Cost: 1 stat point)]

Three thousand seven hundred dollars. In four days. From nothing.
He lay back on the bed. The ceiling stared back at him. The drip resumed. Plip. Plop.
His phone buzzed one last time. Unknown number.
Unknown: Impressive. Four men. No weapon. On camera.
Unknown: You’re escalating faster than any host I’ve seen.
Unknown: Victoria Ashford crossed her threshold tonight. Did you notice?
Unknown: Of course you did. The system would have told you.
Unknown: Be careful with her Damien. The Ashfords don’t play games.
Unknown: They end them.
Unknown: Also. Your rebate streak is impressive. Day 3. If you reach day 7 the multiplier will make you wealthy enough to buy anything in the shop.
Unknown: But you need to survive until then.
Unknown: And survival is not guaranteed.
Unknown: Goodnight Damien. Sleep well.
Unknown: Tomorrow Victoria makes her move.
