"Thank you," he said. "For the warning."
"Don’t thank me. I’m not doing this for you." She looked away. Toward the trees. "I’m doing this because my mother is bored. And when she’s bored, she plays games with people. And I’m tired of watching people get destroyed."
"Then why not stop her?"
"I can’t. She’s an Ashford. I’m an Ashford. We don’t stop each other. We just manage the collateral."
"And I’m collateral?"
"Right now? You’re a curiosity. But curiosities become collateral very quickly in my family." She looked back at him. "Don’t become collateral Damien."
[Victoria Ashford. Arousal: 4% → 6%. Trust: 22%. Curiosity: 81%.]
Two percent arousal. Up from four. It was almost nothing. But it was the second time her arousal had moved. The ice was cracking. Barely. But cracking.
"I have one question," Damien said.
"What?"
"The Reddit comment. The anonymous one. ’I know what you are. Keep watching.’ You showed it to me at The Vault. What did you find when you traced it?"
Victoria’s expression shifted. Not much. A tightening around the eyes. A slight press of her lips.
"The VPN routed through Reykjavik, Singapore, and Toronto," she said. "Three jurisdictions. Three separate privacy laws. Whoever set it up knew exactly what they were doing."
"But?"
"But the third node had a configuration error. A digital fingerprint. I traced it to a server in Downtown LA." She paused. "A private server. Registered to a shell company called VV Holdings."
VV Holdings. VV. Victor Vance. The rival system holder.
[System alert: Victoria Ashford has traced the anonymous comment to Victor Vance’s infrastructure.]
[Victor Vance is actively monitoring both Host and Victoria Ashford.]
[Threat level: Critical.]
"Do you know who VV Holdings is?" Damien asked carefully.
"No. The shell company leads to another shell company. And that one leads to another. It’s turtles all the way down." She crossed her arms. "But someone behind that server is watching you. And they wanted me to watch you too."
"They wanted you to find the comment."
"Yes."
"And you did."
"And I did." She uncrossed her arms. "Which means someone is playing a game with both of us. And I don’t like being a piece on someone else’s board."
"Neither do I."
[Victoria Ashford. Trust: 22% → 26%. Shared enemy detected: Trust multiplier active.]
Shared enemy. The system recognized that Victoria and Damien now had a common threat. Victor Vance. And shared enemies built trust faster than shared interests.
"Thursday," Victoria said. "Come to the estate. Let my mother test you. But don’t show her your weaknesses. Show her your strengths. She respects strength. She exploits weakness."
"What if she sees both?"
"Then you’re in trouble." She started walking away. Then stopped. "One more thing."
"What?"
"My mother is beautiful. She’s 45 but she looks 35. She’s charming. Elegant. And she hasn’t been touched by my father in over a year. She’s lonely. And lonely people do dangerous things."
[Eleanor Ashford. Data updated: Sexual activity in last 12 months: Zero. Emotional state: Lonely. Vulnerability: Moderate.]
"I’m not going to seduce your mother," Damien said.
Victoria looked at him. Her expression was unreadable. "I didn’t say you were. I said she’s lonely. What you do with that information is your business."
She turned and walked away. Her dark jeans and white blouse disappeared into the crowd of students. The metronome click of her heels faded.
[Victoria Ashford. Arousal: 6%. Trust: 26%. Curiosity: 81%. Suspicion: 35%.]
[MAIN QUEST STAGE 3: Unlocked.]
[Stage 3: The Luncheon. Attend the Ashford Estate luncheon on Thursday. Navigate Eleanor Ashford’s test. Maintain Victoria’s trust.]
[Stage 3 Objective: Survive the luncheon without being compromised.]
[Reward: +1000 EXP, +$10,000, Unlock Skill: Dominance Aura Level 1]
[Warning: Richard Ashford may be present.]
Richard. The father. The man who would eventually try to kill him.
Damien stood alone on the path. Students walked past him. Laughter and chatter and normal life swirled around him. But he was somewhere else entirely.
He had $8,513 in his system wallet. He was Level 6. He had four unspent stat points. He had a new skill called Arousal Spike. He had Main Quest Stage 3 on Thursday. He had an incomplete Daily Quest with Rachel Torres that had twenty hours left. He had Chloe’s ultimatum expiring in two days. He had Ashley distancing herself. He had Mia demanding truth. He had Sophia’s suspicion growing. And he had an anonymous rival system holder who was manipulating both him and Victoria Ashford.
His phone buzzed. Rachel.
Rachel: I’m not angry anymore.
Rachel: I’m horny and annoyed. Which is worse.
Rachel: You owe me Damien. Big.
Damien: I know. I’ll make it up to you.
Rachel: You better. Tomorrow. Same rooftop. No phones allowed.
[Daily Quest: Seduce Rachel Torres. Status: Active. Time remaining: 21 hours and 38 minutes.]
He needed to finish that quest. But first he needed to allocate his stat points and prepare for Thursday.
He walked back to his apartment. Locked the door. Sat on the bed. Opened the system interface.
[Host: Damien Black]

[EXP: 970/800. Overflow: 170 EXP applied to next level.]
[Cash: $8,513.35]
[Rebate Level: 110%]
[Stat Points Available: 4]
Four points. He needed to be strategic. Thursday was two days away. The Ashford Estate. Eleanor’s test. Victoria’s warning. Possibly Richard’s presence.
He needed strength. He needed charm. He needed perception. And he needed luck. Always luck.
[Purchase: +1 Strength (Cost: 1 stat point)]
[Purchase: +1 Charm (Cost: 1 stat point)]
[Purchase: +1 Perception (Cost: 1 stat point)]
[Purchase: +1 Luck (Cost: 1 stat point)]
[Updated stats:]
[Strength: 9]
[Stamina: 8]
[Charm: 10]
[Seduction: 5]
[Perception: 8]
[Endurance: 8]
[Luck: 5]
Charm at 10. Average. Finally. Perception at 8. Above average. Strength at 9. Almost average. Luck at 5. Also average.
He was becoming normal. Average. And in a world where most people were average, being average with system skills and items made him extraordinary.
[Level 6 System Shop - New Items:]
[Arousal Spike - Unlocked. Cost: Free. Skill-based. Cooldown: 1 hour.]
[Dominance Aura (Tier 1) - $300 - When activated, Host projects an aura of authority and command. People in Host’s presence feel compelled to respect and obey. Duration: 30 minutes. Cooldown: 12 hours.]
[Body Enhancement Pill (Tier 2) - $1000 - Permanently increases all physical stats by 3. Adds 1 inch of height. 10 pounds of lean muscle. Facial structure optimized for maximum attractiveness.]
[Mind Shield (Tier 1) - $200 - Protects Host from psychological manipulation and interrogation. Duration: 4 hours. Essential for high-stakes social encounters.]
The Body Enhancement Pill Tier 2 caught his eye. All physical stats up by 3. That would bring Strength to 12. Stamina to 11. Endurance to 11. Above average across the board. Plus another inch of height and ten pounds of muscle. His appearance would shift again. More dramatic. More noticeable.
But $1000 was a lot. And the Tier 1 pill had already changed him enough. Another transformation might raise questions he couldn’t answer.
The Mind Shield was more practical. Eleanor Ashford was going to probe him. Test him. Look for weaknesses. The Mind Shield would protect him from psychological manipulation. Four hours of mental protection. Enough for a lunch.
[Purchase: Mind Shield (Tier 1) - $200]
[Purchase: Dominance Aura (Tier 1) - $300]
[Remaining balance: $8,013.35]
He had the tools. Confidence Aura. Dominance Aura. Mind Shield. Voice Modulator. Pheromone Release. Desire Reading Level 2. Arousal Spike. Self-Defense Level 2.
He was building an arsenal. One quest at a time. One level at a time.
His phone buzzed. Chloe.
Chloe: 2 days.
Just two words. A countdown. A reminder.
Then another text. From the unknown number.
Unknown: Victoria came to you. That’s significant.
Unknown: She doesn’t come to anyone. Ever.
Unknown: You’re building trust with her. Good. Trust is a weapon.
Unknown: But be careful. Victoria’s trust and Victoria’s obsession are separated by a very thin line.
Unknown: And obsessions tend to destroy the thing they’re focused on.
Unknown: Thursday. The estate. Eleanor. Victoria. Possibly Richard.
Unknown: You’ll need more than a nice outfit and a smile to survive that table.
Unknown: You’ll need to become someone they’ve never seen before.
Unknown: Someone even you don’t recognize yet.
