Damien left Mia’s apartment at 9 p.m.

She wanted him to stay. Her fingers lingered on his arm as he pulled on his leather jacket. Her eyes were soft and sleepy and full of something that looked dangerously close to attachment.

"I’ll see you at the meeting tomorrow," she said.Full novel: Lust Rebate System: From Nerd to LA God — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"Yeah."

"Damien."

"Yeah?"

"This doesn’t have to be weird. What happened. It doesn’t change things between us at work."

He nodded. But they both knew that was a lie. Things had already changed. He’d been inside her twenty minutes ago. You don’t come back from that by pretending it didn’t happen.

He kissed her forehead. She smiled. Then he walked out into the Hollywood night.

The air was cool. The streetlights buzzed. His body ached from the fight with Tyler and the sex with Mia and the crash that comes after both. His neck still throbbed where Tyler had grabbed him. His back was sore from the counter. But his system wallet was growing and his stats were climbing and he was no longer the same person who had mopped champagne off the floor yesterday.

The walk from Mia’s apartment to his building took forty minutes. He used the time to check his phone and assess the damage.

It was worse than he thought.

Tyler’s post had evolved. It wasn’t just a rant anymore. It was a full narrative. Someone had dug up Damien’s social media and found his old posts from two years ago. Boring stuff. Meme reposts. Game reviews. A photo of his broken phone screen with the caption "Apple hates the poor."

The comments had turned into a full roast session.

"Bro this guy’s phone screen looks like a spider web"

"He really is broke lol"

"Mia Chen went from a guy with a car to a guy who rides a bicycle"

"The barback barbacked too hard"

But buried in the mockery were a few comments that caught his attention.

"Okay but has anyone actually seen him recently? He got buff overnight apparently"

"My friend was at The Vault last week and said he looked different. Like a completely different person"

"Someone said he has a modeling contract now? Is that true?"

False. All false. But the rumors were spreading. And rumors were more powerful than truth.

Then he found the thread that made his stomach drop.

It was on LA Crest’s unofficial Reddit page. A post titled: "Does anyone know Damien Black?"

The post contained his staff photo from The Vault’s website. The old one. Skinny. Tired. Forgettable. Next to it, someone had pasted a blurry photo taken from outside Mia’s apartment building that afternoon. It showed Damien walking in wearing the leather jacket and the button-down. The difference was jarring.

Top comment: "Are these the same person? Seriously. What am I looking at?"

Second comment: "Steroids. Obviously."

Third comment: "Or he found a really good tailor and a gym"

Fourth comment: "My roommate says he’s in her Lit class and he never talked to anyone. Now apparently he’s fighting guys with baseball bats and sleeping with bartenders. Character arc of the year."

Fifth comment. And this one made him stop walking.

Posted by an account with no username. Just a string of numbers.

"I know Damien Black. He’s not what he seems. Keep watching."

[System perception analysis: Comment source traced. Account created 3 hours ago. No prior activity. IP address masked through multiple proxies.]

[Threat assessment: Unknown. Monitor.]

Someone was watching him. Someone who knew more than they should. And they were using an anonymous account to draw attention to him.

Damien screenshot the comment and filed it in the back of his mind. He couldn’t deal with it right now. He had bigger problems.

His phone buzzed. Chloe.

Chloe: You left me on read for 6 hours.

Chloe: 6 HOURS.

Chloe: I know what you were doing. Don’t even lie.

Damien: I was handling a situation.

Chloe: A situation. Is that what we’re calling it?

Chloe: Because from where I’m sitting it looks like you fought a guy with a bat and then slept with your coworker.

Chloe: In the same day.

Chloe: On the same day you told me you MIGHT have a date.

Chloe: MIGHT.

Damien: It got complicated.

Chloe: Complicated. He says complicated.

Chloe: You know what? Fine. Don’t tell me. But when you need someone to bail you out of jail or identify your body, call someone else.

Damien: You don’t mean that.

Chloe: I absolutely do.

Chloe: ...

Chloe: Come over tomorrow after your meeting. Bring Chinese food

Damien: Deal.

He pocketed his phone and kept walking. When he reached his building, the stairwell smelled like piss again. Third floor. Same cracked door. Same mildew. Same life.

But something was different.

A plain brown box sat outside his door.

[System delivery: Items purchased during Emergency Quest rewards are now available.]

[Contents: 2 Stat Points to distribute. New System Shop items unlocked.]

He hadn’t ordered anything. The stat points were from leveling up. The new shop items were from reaching Level 2. But the box was physical. Which meant the system could deliver things to his door without him ordering them.

He picked it up and went inside.

The apartment looked the same. Rice bowl in the sink. Cracked ceiling. Broken bathroom light that he’d been meaning to fix for three months. But the body standing in the mirror was different. Broader shoulders. Sharper jaw. Eyes that held something they hadn’t held yesterday.

Weight. Purpose. Danger.

He sat on the bed and opened the system interface.

[Host: Damien Black]

[Age: 22]

[Level: 2]

[EXP: 170/200]

[Cash: $1,274 + $38 rebate = $1,312]

[Rebate Level: 60% (50% base + 10% streak bonus)]

[Stat Points Available: 2]

He needed to allocate his points carefully. Tomorrow’s meeting at The Vault could go sideways. If Chad’s family was pushing to get him fired, he needed every advantage he could get.

He opened his stat sheet.

[Strength: 7]

[Agility: 5]

[Stamina: 8]

[Charm: 8]

[Seduction: 4]

[Perception: 7]

[Endurance: 7]

[Luck: 3]

Two points. Where did they go?

Charm was at 8. Still below average. If he was going to survive tomorrow’s meeting and navigate the social fallout, he needed people to like him. Or at least not hate him on sight.

Seduction was at 4. Abysmally low. Mia had responded to the pheromones and the body enhancement, not his actual seduction skills. He’d gotten lucky. Very lucky. The next quest might not be so easy.

Luck was at 3. Also terrible. And after the fertility dice roll, he was acutely aware of what low luck could mean.

[Purchase: +1 Charm (Cost: 1 stat point)]

[Purchase: +1 Seduction (Cost: 1 stat point)]

[Updated stats:]

[Strength: 7]

[Agility: 5]

[Stamina: 8]

[Charm: 9]

[Seduction: 5]

[Perception: 7]

[Endurance: 7]

[Luck: 3]

Charm 9. One below average. Seduction 5. Average. Not great, but better than before.

[Level 2 System Shop items now available:]

He scrolled through the new items.

[Confidence Aura (Tier 1) - $150 - When activated, Host projects an aura of calm authority. People in Host’s presence feel compelled to take Host seriously. Duration: 1 hour. Cooldown: 6 hours.]

[Voice Modulator (Tier 1) - $100 - Host can adjust voice pitch and tone at will. Useful for negotiations and seduction. Passive skill once purchased.]

[Outfit: Business Casual (Tier 1) - $120 - A perfectly fitted outfit for professional settings. Automatically adjusts to Host’s body type.]

[Perception Boost (Tier 1) - $80 - Temporarily increases Perception by 3 points for 1 hour. Useful for reading social dynamics.]

The Memory Wipe caught his eye. Three hundred dollars to erase five minutes of someone’s memory. If Tyler had a video of the fight, if someone had footage he needed gone, this could fix it.

But $300 was a lot. And he needed to save money for tomorrow’s meeting.

The Confidence Aura and the Business Casual Outfit were more practical. He was walking into a meeting with his manager who was being pressured by VIP clients. He needed to look the part and sound the part.

[Purchase: Confidence Aura (Tier 1) - $150]

[Purchase: Business Casual Outfit (Tier 1) - $120]

[Purchase: Voice Modulator (Tier 1) - $100]

[Total spent: $370]

[Remaining balance: $942]

His wallet was shrinking. But the rebate would help. As long as he kept completing quests, the money would cycle back.

A new box appeared at his door ten minutes later. Inside was a folded navy blue blazer, a white dress shirt, dark slacks, and a pair of brown leather shoes that fit perfectly. Everything adjusted to his new body seamlessly.

He tried it on and looked in the mirror.

The person staring back at him didn’t work for $14 an hour. The person in the mirror looked like he owned the building. Like he belonged in a boardroom. Like he could walk into The Vault and sit in the VIP section without being asked to mop it.

[Confidence Aura: Available. Duration: 1 hour. Cooldown: 6 hours.]

[Voice Modulator: Equipped. Passive.]

He practiced speaking. His voice had already deepened slightly from the Body Enhancement Pill. The Voice Modulator let him fine-tune it. He lowered the pitch by a fraction and smoothed out the rough edges. The result was a voice that sounded calm. Controlled. Authoritative without being aggressive.

"Good morning Marcus. Thank you for meeting with me."

The words sounded different coming out of his mouth now. Less like a request and more like a statement.

His phone buzzed. An email from the university. A notification from the student portal. He opened it.

[Dear Mr. Black,

This email is to inform you that your scholarship status is under review due to concerns about off-campus conduct. Please report to the Financial Aid office on Wednesday at 9:00 AM for a hearing.]

[Sincerely,

Office of Student Conduct

LA Crest University]

His scholarship. They were coming for his scholarship.

[WARNING: Host’s academic stability is now under threat.]

[If Host loses scholarship, tuition costs: $45,000 per semester.]

[Host’s current system balance: $942.]

[Recommendation: Accelerate quest completion.]

They were surrounding him. Chad on social media. Marcus at The Vault. The university on his scholarship. All because he defended himself against a guy with a bat. All because the wrong people saw his name and decided he was a problem.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, an anonymous account was watching him. Posting cryptic comments. Waiting.

Damien sat on his bed in his new suit and stared at the ceiling.

The system pulsed.

[New Daily Quest available.]

[Generating quest...]

[Quest target selected based on proximity and opportunity.]

[Daily Quest: A woman in Host’s immediate social circle has been secretly attracted to Host since the body transformation. Find her and accept her invitation.]

[Reward: +60 EXP, +$600, Unlock Skill: Desire Reading Level 1]

[Time limit: 24 hours.]

[Target: Hidden. System will provide directional guidance.]

A woman in his immediate social circle. Secretly attracted to him since the transformation. The system wouldn’t tell him who. He had to find her.

He thought about his social circle. It was small. Mia. Chloe. His classmates. His coworkers at The Vault.

Chloe was marked as an anchor. Quest generation disabled. So it wasn’t her.

Mia was a completed quest. The system didn’t usually repeat targets.

That left his classmates and coworkers. Women he saw every day but never talked to because he was invisible.

He wasn’t invisible anymore.

His phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.

Unknown: Hey. This is Sophia Russo. We sit next to each other in Lit class. I don’t know if you remember me.

Sophia Russo. Italian-American. Brunette. Athletic body. Sat two seats to his left. He’d noticed her because it was impossible not to. But she’d never spoken to him.

Sophia: I saw what happened online. For what it’s worth I think Tyler is an ass and you did the right thing.

Sophia: Also there’s a party at Sigma Chi tomorrow night. A bunch of us from Lit are going. You should come.

Sophia: If you want. No pressure.

[System notification: Target identified.]

[Daily Quest directional guidance: Active.]
