Chapter 4- Kael

Marked by the Four Beast Lords After Transmigration

Nia followed the massive black creature through the rain because remaining alone in the forest felt significantly more dangerous than following the strange impossible being who had already chased other predators away from her once.

That did not mean she trusted him.

The distinction mattered enough that she kept repeating it to herself every few minutes whenever exhaustion and relief threatened to soften the sharp edges of her caution.

Rain continued pouring steadily through the canopy overhead, soaking her clothes until the fabric clung heavily against her skin and making every breath of cold air feel sharper than the last. Mud dragged at her feet with each step while roots and slick stones forced her to watch the ground constantly to avoid falling.

The creature ahead of her slowed slightly when the terrain steepened.

Nia noticed immediately.

She had started noticing everything about him whether she wanted to or not. Every time she stumbled, his head turned back toward her before she fully regained her balance. Whenever thick brush blocked the path, he moved through it first and left an easier opening behind him. He never moved so far ahead that she lost sight of him through the rain.

The consistency of it unsettled her in a way she could no longer dismiss as animal instinct.

“You know,” she muttered while carefully stepping over a thick root, “this whole terrifying forest monster thing would probably work better if you stopped acting worried every time I trip.”

One dark ear flicked backward toward her voice.

The reaction came so quickly that irritation immediately followed her surprise.

“You really aren't being subtle about it anymore,” she muttered toward his broad back.

The low rumbling sound rolled faintly through his chest again.

She still did not know what to make of the strange noises he made. Earlier, hearing the sound had nearly stopped her heart because she assumed it meant aggression, but after spending this much time near him, she had already started recognizing differences between them. The rough vibration from before, when something moved through the forest around them, had sounded sharp enough to make her skin tighten instinctively. This quieter rumble felt calmer, though nothing about him actually felt safe enough for that realization to comfort her properly.

Nia tightened her grip on the branch she still carried.

No.

She was not getting emotionally attached to a giant tiger creature because he made expressive noises at her.

The forest around them gradually changed as they moved deeper between the trees. The undergrowth no longer crowded around their legs quite so heavily, and narrow trails cut naturally through the terrain in ways that suggested regular use. Several tree trunks nearby bore deep claw marks far above her head while unfamiliar scents lingered beneath the rain and wet earth strongly enough that she noticed them despite not understanding what they meant.

The creature slowed again.

This time he stopped completely.

Nia nearly walked into his side before catching herself at the last second.

“What now?”

The creature turned toward her.

Then his body shifted.

Nia froze instantly.

The transformation happened with terrifying speed. Massive shoulders compressed inward while black fur receded rapidly across reshaping limbs. Bone cracked sharply beneath the sound of rain as the enormous predator folded inward and changed into something humanoid.

Nia stumbled backward so quickly she nearly lost her footing in the mud.

The branch snapped upward between them on pure instinct.

One moment a giant beast towered in front of her.

The next, a man stood beneath the rain-dark trees.

Or something close enough to a man that her thoughts struggled to settle comfortably around either answer.

Long black hair hung wet against broad shoulders and bronze skin while tiger ears remained visible atop his head beneath damp strands of hair. A black tail moved slowly behind him through the rain while golden eyes stayed fixed directly on her face.

The eyes made everything worse because nothing about them changed between forms. The same focused awareness from earlier remained locked entirely on her, but now she could actually read the expressions behind it. She could see curiosity openly now in the slight tilt of his head and the narrowing of his gaze when her grip tightened on the branch.

Seeing intention clearly across his face changed the shape of her fear immediately because the danger no longer felt distant or animalistic in the same way.

Meanwhile, he behaved as though nothing unusual had happened.

Nia stared openly despite herself while her mind tried unsuccessfully to reorganize around what she was seeing. He clearly was not human. The ears alone destroyed that possibility before she even considered the tail or the unnatural gold of his eyes.

Unfortunately, another realization immediately followed behind that one.

He was completely naked.

Nia jerked her gaze upward so fast her neck almost hurt.

“Oh my god.”

The man tilted his head slightly, looking more curious than embarrassed.

Nia pointed the branch directly at him.

“You cannot just do that without warning people first.”

The low rumbling sound returned immediately, carrying none of the tension she had heard earlier in the forest. If anything, it sounded suspiciously amused.

Nia stared at him in disbelief.

“No. Don’t start laughing at me right now.”

The rumble deepened slightly, and she realized with growing horror that she was already learning what his different reactions sounded like.

She was not sure what it said about her that she was already recognizing the differences.

Unfortunately, it also did absolutely nothing to stop her from noticing how physically overwhelming he still looked in this form. Seeing the beast's size translated into a shape closer to her own made the strength she had already witnessed feel far more tangible.

Rainwater slid slowly over bronze skin and dark markings that traced subtly along his shoulders and throat. His hands still looked dangerous too, with claws slightly too sharp at the ends of strong fingers.

The man stepped toward her slowly.

Nia’s shoulders tightened automatically.

He stopped immediately.

The response came so quickly that she blinked.

Every time she genuinely sounded uncomfortable, he halted without argument. She could see the restraint much more clearly now that she could read his expressions properly. The desire to move closer existed openly in the way his attention remained fixed on her, yet he kept checking himself whenever she reacted badly.

The man lowered himself into a crouch suddenly.

Nia stiffened again before realizing what he was doing.

Making himself appear less overwhelming.

The movement startled her enough that some of the tension in her shoulders loosened before she could stop it. Even crouched, he remained much larger than her, but the height difference no longer felt quite so crushing. Golden eyes stayed fixed steadily on her face while rainwater rolled slowly down sharp cheekbones and damp black hair.

Then he spoke.

“Kael.”

His voice sounded deeper in this form, rough enough that she felt part of it vibrate through her chest when he spoke.

His name.

A name made him feel less like an impossible force of nature and more like an actual individual standing in front of her, which somehow made the entire situation feel stranger rather than easier to process.

Nia swallowed once before answering carefully.

“Nia.”

The moment her name left her mouth, the focus in his expression sharpened immediately.

His golden eyes remained fixed entirely on her while that low rumbling sound spread through his chest again, deeper now and unmistakably pleased.

“Nia,” he repeated slowly.

The way he said her name made warmth move unexpectedly through her stomach before she could stop it. The reaction had less to do with the sound itself and more to do with the attention behind it. Kael spoke her name like hearing it answered something important inside him.

Nia tightened her grip on the branch again because that feeling was dangerous in ways she did not want to examine too closely.

Kael’s ears flicked suddenly toward the darkness behind them.

The shift in his attention happened instantly enough that she noticed it immediately now. His posture sharpened while the rumbling in his chest vanished completely.

Then he stood.

Rain hissed through the trees while distant sounds echoed faintly somewhere deeper in the forest.

Kael looked back toward her.

“Come.”

The word came low and matter-of-fact, spoken like this entire situation was obvious.

Nia stared at him for several seconds before glancing out into the dark forest surrounding them. Cold had settled deeply enough into her body that she could not stop shivering completely anymore, and exhaustion dragged heavily at every movement she made.

Staying out here alone would be stupid.

Following him farther into the unknown might also be stupid.

Unfortunately, one option looked significantly more survivable than the other.

Nia exhaled slowly through her nose.

“This is temporary,” she warned while lifting the branch slightly. “And you still need clothes.”

Kael looked genuinely unconcerned about the second part.

The rumble returned immediately.

Nia narrowed her eyes.

“You are impossible.”
