3 – What Are You So Arrogant About as a Front Desk?
That night, Tang Qianluo slept restlessly, haunted by dreams of a black leopard chasing her, its gaping maw threatening to devour her!
In her half-asleep state, she felt a sudden chill on her neck. Opening her eyes, she was startled by the unfamiliar man before her.
“Good morning, Mrs. Ning,” the man said flippantly, pausing his movements. “Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Zuo Ye, Ning Dai’s personal physician, here on orders to treat your wounds. Tsk, Ning Dai really has no idea how to be gentle with a delicate flower.”
“Speak another word and you’ll lose your tongue,” Ning Dai’s icy voice cut in as he entered the room unnoticed, making Zuo Ye shudder.
Zuo Ye hurriedly packed his things and stepped aside, shrugging. “Bowing to the tyrant!”
Ning Dai cast a cold glance at the woman on the bed before striding out. Several maids then entered carrying clothes, reminding Tang Qianluo that she was still wearing her wedding gown.
Outside, Zuo Ye leaned against the doorframe with crossed arms. “She’s not carrying any sachets or wearing perfume. Your headache relief probably isn’t related to those.”
Ning Dai stared thoughtfully at the doorway.
Zuo Ye patted his shoulder with a laugh. “Look on the bright side—after over a decade, we might finally have a breakthrough for your condition.”
“Your hand!”
Ning Dai’s low roar carried a blade-like sharpness. Unfazed, Zuo Ye shrugged and headed toward the dining room.
“See him out!”
“Ning Dai, you can’t just kick me out after using me!” Zuo Ye protested but was still politely escorted from the Ning Residence by the butler.
Before leaving, Ning Dai recalled Zuo Ye’s advice to increase contact with Tang Qianluo. Tapping the armrest, he gave the butler some instructions.
Tang Qianluo had thought marriage would mark the end of her ordeal, but when the butler delivered her to the Ning Corporation Building, she realized her trials were just beginning.
“Hello, which floor is President Ning’s office on?” she asked the receptionist while surveying the building’s interior.
“Do you have an appointment?” The receptionist’s tone was impatient.
Not bothering to argue, Tang Qianluo shrugged. “No.”
“No appointment? I see a dozen gold-diggers like you every day! Think you can seduce President Ning just because you’re pretty? Take a good look in the mirror!”
“Hey, you’ve got spinach in your teeth. Didn’t anyone tell you receptionists shouldn’t eat leeks in the morning?” Tang Qianluo’s quiet remark drew attention from others nearby.
The receptionist flushed crimson, but before she could retort, Tang Qianluo covered her mouth with a tissue.
“Better not talk—I’m afraid people outside might smell your breath.”
Throughout the exchange, Tang Qianluo remained calm and smiling. The receptionist, known for bullying others with her looks, was left speechless while onlookers stifled laughs.
“You…” The receptionist pointed furiously, ready to shout.
But a familiar voice interrupted her. “Good morning, Madam!”
A man bowed respectfully. Tang Qianluo looked blankly at him, having no memory of who he was.
“I’m Ji Xianyang, President Ning’s personal assistant. He sent me to escort you.”Tang Qianluo nodded, glanced at the front desk woman’s name tag, and surveyed her livid expression.
“Sun Hong, that’s a nice name. Pity we won’t be seeing each other again!”
She was just saying it casually—after all, the company wasn’t hers. It was merely venting through words.
Unexpectedly, the moment she left, Ji Xianyang received an order from the boss—fire the front desk employee Sun Hong!
Ji Xianyang was inwardly shocked. He never imagined this wife could influence the boss’s decisions.
Sun Hong’s face turned ashen as she wept and begged for another chance. The HR manager cast a cold glance her way, unwilling to utter even an extra word.
Those who offended the Ning Family would likely find it impossible to gain a foothold in the capital from now on!
“Madam, the CEO’s office is on the twenty-fourth floor. You can go straight up,” Ji Xianyang said, pressing the elevator button for Tang Qianluo.
Tang Qianluo nodded and thanked him.
The entire twenty-fourth floor was Ning Dai’s office space. As soon as she pushed the door open, she heard Ning Dai’s low, furious roar.
“Get out.”
Tang Qianluo stood silently at the doorway, watching as the man struck in the forehead by Ning Dai’s documents revealed a provocative smile.
He wiped the blood from his temple and glanced sideways at Tang Qianluo.
“Pleasure to meet you. I’m Ning Dai’s younger brother, Ning Yun.”
The man’s thin lips parted, his words crisp and articulate, his ethereal voice like a melodious zither. But the hatred in his eyes was too intense; even as he smiled, it sent a chill down Tang Qianluo’s spine.
“Ning Yun, do you have a death wish?Ning Dai’s sharp questioning was both a question and a statement.
“What are you afraid of? I’m just getting acquainted with my sister-in-law. You didn’t even invite me, your own brother, to your wedding—can’t I come by to say hello?” The man’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “Or are you afraid I’ll tell her the truth?”
The truth? What truth? Tang Qianluo was completely baffled.
“It seems my sister-in-law knows nothing at all. Ning Dai, the head of the Ning Family, is the son of a murderer!”
The secret was like a spark in dry grass—just a few words, yet enough to ignite everything.
Instantly, the office atmosphere turned icy, silent as a graveyard at night.
“So?” Tang Qianluo’s red lips parted slightly as she asked softly.
Ning Yun was taken aback, not expecting such a response.
“So what does that have to do with Ning Dai?” Tang Qianluo pressed, receiving no answer.
“How can someone like him deserve to live in this world?” Ning Yun’s words were sharp and relentless.
Tang Qianluo’s eyes were filled with seriousness.
“If Ning Dai is guilty, the law will punish him—not you spouting off here. It’s the twenty-first century; implicating entire families was abolished long ago. Please study the law before you speak. If you’re here to congratulate us on our marriage, you’re welcome. If you’re here to spout nonsense, then please leave!”
Ning Yun clenched his fists tightly, gritting his teeth as he forced out the words, “Do you even know what happened? How dare you spout such nonsense here!”
“If he doesn’t tell me, then I don’t want to know!” Tang Qianluo retorted, lifting her chin.
Ning Yun felt as if his teeth were about to shatter from clenching. “You trust him that much?”
“Exactly!”
Years later, Ning Dai would still recall this day—the day a girl, delicate as a fawn, shielded all his wounds. She asked no questions about the past, simply standing by his side.Ning Yun had originally intended to provoke Ning Dai, but ended up leaving the Ning Corporation Building in a furious rage himself.
Bang—
The sound of a teacup being knocked over startled Tang Qianluo.
She turned to see Ning Dai bracing himself against the desk with both hands, the bluish tint of his fingertips and the bulging veins in his neck clearly showing his discomfort!
“Ning Dai, are you alright?”
She rushed over in two quick steps.
