Raja waited until the first gunman was close enough.
He didn’t rush immediately.
He watched the man’s feet, the position of his weapon, the angle of his shoulders and the distance between them.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, the instincts he had inherited from John Wick and the combat knowledge from Tai Lung seemed to overlap naturally,
Giving him an understanding of the situation that he simply hadn’t possessed a few days ago.
‘Now.’
The instant the gunman tightened his finger around the trigger, Raja moved.
His hand shot forward and caught the weapon just as the man tried to fire, forcing the barrel away from its original line.
At the same time,
Raja stepped inside the man’s reach and drove the edge of his hand into the side of his neck with frightening precision.
The strike landed exactly where he intended.
The man’s eyes widened.
His body immediately lost its rhythm, and the pistol slipped from his fingers.
Raja caught it before it hit the floor.
The gunman staggered backward, both hands instinctively moving toward his throat as he struggled to breathe properly.
Raja didn’t give him time to recover.
He turned the pistol in his hand, raised it toward the man’s leg and fired twice in rapid succession.
BANG!
BANG!
The shots struck low, forcing the man to collapse.
Raja immediately kicked him across the face, sending him crashing onto the floor.
The entire exchange had taken only a few seconds.
The second attacker barely had time to understand what had happened.
“What the hell?!”
He raised his weapon.
Raja was already moving.
He stepped onto the edge of the overturned table and launched himself upward.
The gunman fired instinctively.
BANG!
BANG!
Raja twisted his body in midair.
The bullets passed dangerously close, missing him by mere centimeters.
His rotation carried him directly toward the attacker.
His foot connected with the side of the man’s head.
The impact sent him crashing onto the floor.
Raja landed in a crouch, rolled his shoulder and smoothly came back onto his feet.
Then…
Silence.
“….”
“….”
“….”
The gunfire stopped.
The police outside stopped shooting.
Even the remaining civilians seemed to have forgotten how to breathe.
Raja stood in the middle of the ruined cake shop with the pistol still in his hand.
May slowly emerged from behind the counter.
Her eyes were wide.
She stared at Raja as though she was seeing an entirely different person.
“Raj…”
Raja looked toward her.
“Are you alright?”
May nodded slowly.
“I…
I’m fine.”
Before either of them could say anything else, George Stacy’s voice rang through the shop.
“DROP THE GUN!”
Raja immediately looked toward him.
Several officers had their weapons pointed directly at him.
He understood.
From their perspective, a teenager had just appeared in the middle of a hostage situation, taken a gun from one of the attackers and dropped two armed men in a matter of seconds.
They couldn’t simply ignore that.
Raja slowly raised his free hand.
“Alright.”
He lowered the pistol carefully and placed it on the floor.
Then he stepped away from it.
“Nobody needs to get nervous.”
The officers moved in cautiously.
Two immediately secured the unconscious attackers while another kicked the weapons away from their reach.
One of the officers crouched beside the first gunman and checked his condition.
“He’s breathing.”
Another officer examined the second.
“He’s alive too.”
George Stacy entered the shop, his eyes moving between the injured suspects and Raja.
The scene was a mess.
Broken glass covered the floor.
Several tables had been overturned.
The front of the store had effectively been destroyed by Raja’s Camaro.
Two armed suspects were unconscious.
And somehow, the teenager standing in the middle of it all appeared relatively unharmed.
Stacy looked at him for several seconds.
“Are you injured?”
Raja shook his head.
“No.”
“Name?”
“Raja.”
“Raja what?”
Raja hesitated for half a second before giving his full name.
Stacy nodded and then looked toward May.
“Ma’am, are you alright?”
May nodded her head.
“Yes.”
She glanced toward Raja.
“He saved me.”
Stacy looked back at Raja.
“We saw mam.”
May stepped closer.
“He was here with me.
Those men started shooting, and he used his car to create an opening for everyone to escape.
Then they tried to take us hostage.”
She looked toward the unconscious men.
“He stopped them.”
Her voice became firmer.
“He wasn’t working with them.”
“I know,”
Stacy replied calmly.
May looked surprised.
Stacy gestured toward the officers.
“My people saw most of it.”
He then looked back at Raja.
“But that doesn’t mean we can simply let you walk away.”
Raja sighed hearing him.
“Because of procedure.”
“Exactly.”
Stacy’s tone wasn’t hostile.
“You were involved in an armed incident.
You handled a firearm, two suspects were seriously injured, and there are going to be questions about exactly what happened.”
Raja looked at the destroyed shop.
“And the car.”
Stacy glanced toward the yellow Camaro that had come to rest halfway inside the building.
“Definitely the car.”
Raja winced just thinking about it.
“Yeah…”
He looked toward May.
“Sorry about that.”
May stared at him.
“You drove a car through a wall.”
“I know.”
“You could have gotten yourself killed.
You could have gotten me killed.”
“I know.”
May sighed.
Then, despite everything, she gave him a small smile.
“But you also saved everyone.”
Raja smiled awkwardly.
“Yeah at least some one understands…”
Stacy approached him. This chapter was taken from g.com without permission.
“Raja, you’re not under arrest.”
Raja raised an eyebrow.
“That’s reassuring.”
“But I need you to come with us and give a statement and then go to District Attorney for trail.”
Raja glanced toward May.
She immediately understood what he was thinking.
“I’ll be fine, Go with them.
I will come to the NYPD headquarters.”
He nodded.
“Alright.”
One of the officers stepped forward.
“Do you need an ambulance?”
Raja shook his head.
“No, I’m fine.”
Stacy looked at him again, still clearly curious about what kind of teenager could move like that.
“You sure about that?”
“Yeah.”
Raja looked toward the ruined cake shop.
“Although…”
He pointed toward the scattered remains of the birthday cakes.
“…I think Peter’s birthday cake might be dead.”
May followed his gaze.
The two cake boxes had been knocked over during the shooting, with one smashed beneath a fallen chair.
She stared at it for a moment.
Then sighed.
“Peter is going to be heartbroken.”
Raja looked at her.
“I’ll buy another one.”
May shook her head.
“After everything that just happened, I think we can worry about the cake later.”
Raja nodded.
Fair enough.
As the officers began escorting him toward the entrance, Raja glanced back once more at the ruined shop.
His Camaro had effectively become part of the crime scene, and there was no way he was going to get it back without answering approximately seventeen thousand questions about why he thought driving through a building was a reasonable solution.
Inside his mind, Zarathos finally spoke.
“You handled yourself well.”
Raja sighed internally.
“Thanks.”
There was a brief pause.
“Your John Wick template is particularly useful.”
“I noticed.”
Another pause.
“Your Tai Lung template also performed adequately.”
Raja smiled being praised.
“Only thirty-eight percent synchronization.”
“Imagine what you will accomplish when it reaches one hundred.”
Raja looked at the police car waiting outside.
He suddenly had the distinct feeling that his peaceful Saturday had gone completely off the rails.
“Let’s survive the police interview first.”
By the time Raja arrived at the NYPD headquarters,
The adrenaline from the incident had mostly worn off.
What remained was the uncomfortable realization that he had somehow managed to turn a simple trip to pick up a birthday cake into an encounter with armed criminals, a destroyed cake shop, a wrecked section of his Camaro, and a police investigation.
He sat in the interrogation room across from George Stacy,
Who had placed a recorder on the table before sitting down.
The room itself was plain, with a metal table between them and a camera mounted in the corner.
Raja wasn’t particularly nervous.
He hadn’t done anything illegal intentionally, and as far as he was concerned, there wasn’t anything he needed to hide about what had happened.
Stacy opened his notebook.
“Let’s go through this one more time.
You arrived at the cake shop with May Parker because she needed to pick up a birthday cake.
You stayed outside while she went inside.”
“Yes.”
“Then you heard a gunshot.”
“Yes.”
“You noticed the armed men inside.”
“Yes.”
“And instead of leaving and waiting for the police, you drove your car through the front of the building.”
Raja shifted slightly in his chair.
“When you say it like that, it sounds like I planned it.”
Stacy raised an eyebrow.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then what were you thinking?”
Raja leaned back and thought about it.
“I knew there were people inside.
I couldn’t see exactly what was happening, but I knew there were guns.
I thought if I drove the car through the front at an angle,
I could create an opening for the civilians and use the car as cover.”
Stacy nodded slowly.
“That’s essentially what happened.”
He reached toward the remote on the table and switched on the monitor.
The CCTV footage from inside the shop began playing.
Raja watched himself move.
The first gunman approached.
The weapon came up.
Then Raja moved.
The footage captured the entire exchange from several angles.
Stacy paused it.
“You see this?”
Raja nodded hishead.
“You reacted before he even fired.”
“I guess.”
“Then you disarmed him.”
“I got lucky.”
Stacy gave him a skeptical look.
“Then you struck him in the neck, took his weapon, shot him twice in the knee and kicked him in the face.”
Raja scratched the side of his head.
“When you say it like that, it sounds excessive.”
“Because it was.”
Raja nodded his head calmly.
“Fair.”
Stacy restarted the footage.
The second attacker raised his weapon.
Raja jumped onto the table, twisted through the air and avoided the gunfire before striking the man in the head.
Stacy paused the video again.
“That isn’t something most sixteen-year-old boys can do.”
Raja remained silent.
“….”
“You moved like someone with professional training,”
Stacy continued.
“Your timing, positioning, the way you controlled the weapon, even the way you reacted to the second shooter.
I’ve seen trained officers who wouldn’t have handled that situation as efficiently.”
Raja shrugged his shoulder.
“I don’t really know what to tell you.”
“You don’t?”
“No.”
Stacy leaned forward.
“Then I’ll ask differently.
Where did you learn to fight like that?”
Raja considered his answer carefully.
“I didn’t.”
Stacy stared at him.
“I mean it.
I’ve never had formal combat training.”
“What about firearms?”
“I’ve never fired a gun before.”
Stacy glanced at the footage.
“Yet you picked one up and fired two shots into the attacker’s knee without hesitation.”
Raja nodded his head.
“He was close.”
“That’s your explanation?”
“He was really close.”
Stacy stared at him for several seconds before eventually leaning back.
Raja continued.
“I don’t know how to explain what happened.
Everything just…
happened.
I saw him reach for the gun and reacted.
I wasn’t thinking about technique or anything like that.
It was just instinct.”
“Could you do it again?”
Raja immediately shook his head.
“Honestly?
I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
He looked directly at Stacy.
“If you put me in the same situation tomorrow and told me to repeat exactly what I did today, I honestly couldn’t promise I’d be able to do it.” Get faster updates on g.com.
Stacy studied his face.
“….”
Raja wasn’t being evasive.
At least, that was how it appeared.
Finally, Stacy nodded.
“Fair enough.”
He turned off the monitor.
“There is one more thing.”
Before he could continue, the door opened.
An officer stepped inside.
“Captain Stacy.”
Stacy looked up to look at the officer who just entered.
“Yeah?”
“Your visitor’s here.”
“Who?”
“Raja’s parents.
They brought an attorney.”
Raja immediately sighed.
“That was fast.”
The officer gave him a sympathetic look.
“There are a few more people with them.”
Raja raised an eyebrow.
“How many?”
The officer glanced toward the hallway.
“…Quite a few.”
A few minutes later, the interrogation room door opened again.
Jagadish entered first, followed closely by Grace.
The moment they saw Raja sitting unharmed in the chair, both of them visibly relaxed.
Grace immediately walked over and placed her hands on his shoulders.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine, Mom.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah look at me.”
She checked his arms anyway.
Then his face.
Then his shoulders.
Jagadish wasn’t much better.
“You should have called us immediately.”
“I didn’t really have time.”
“You drove a car through a building!”
Raja looked at him.
“…Technically, the building drove into my car.”
Jagadish stared at his soon who was trying to lighten the mood.
Grace covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
Behind them, Raja’s grandparents entered.
His grandfather looked furious.
Not at Raja.
At everyone else.
“You got yourself involved in a gunfight?”
Raja sighed hearing his grandpa’s angry roar.
“Grandpa…”
“Don’t ‘Grandpa’ me.”
His grandmother immediately stepped between them.
“Let the boy breathe.”
Then May arrived with Peter and Ned.
Peter looked worried.
“Raj.”
“I’m fine.”
Ned stared at him.
“You really drove a Camaro through a wall?
We heard from Aunt May…”
Raja nodded.
“Apparently everything worked well.”
Ned’s eyes widened.
“That’s actually…”
Peter immediately elbowed him.
“Not the time, Ned.”
“Right.
Definitely not the time.”
May approached Raja and smiled gently.
“Thank you Raj.”
Raja nodded.
“I’m glad you’re alright too.”
She glanced toward the officers.
“What happens now?”
The attorney who had accompanied Raja’s parents stepped forward and began speaking with Stacy privately.
Raja listened from his chair while the two discussed the circumstances surrounding the incident, the CCTV footage,
The injuries suffered by the suspects and the fact that Raja had been acting in defense of civilians.
After several minutes, Stacy returned.
“Here’s where we stand.”
Everyone became quiet.
“Based on what we’ve seen, we’re not treating Raja as one of the attackers.
The footage clearly shows that.”
Jagadish nodded.
“But because he discharged a firearm during the incident and seriously injured two suspects, the matter has to be reviewed by the District Attorney.”
The attorney nodded.
“Naturally.”
Stacy continued to give his explanation.
“The DA will determine whether any charges should be filed.”
Raja sighed just thinking about it.
“And I’m guessing the DA isn’t working today.”
“It’s Saturday.”
Stacy gave him a sympathetic smile.
“So no.
The earliest this can be reviewed is Monday.”
The attorney asked,
“Until then?”
Stacy reached for a document.
“I can release him under a written bail schedule.”
He placed the paperwork on the table.
“Raja needs to provide a written promise that he’ll appear when required and cooperate with the investigation.”
Raja looked at the document.
“That’s it?”
“For now.”
The attorney carefully reviewed the paperwork before nodding.
“That should be acceptable.”
Raja picked up the pen.
He read the statement once more before signing it.
“I’ll appear.”
Stacy collected the document.
“Good.
Then you’re free to go.”
Raja slowly got up.
His grandfather immediately placed a hand on his shoulder.
“We’re going home.”
Raja nodded.
“Yeah.”
As everyone began leaving the room, Peter quietly approached him.
“Raj.”
Raja looked at him hearing him.
“Thanks.”
Raja smiled as he shook his hand’s off.
“Don’t worry about it.”
Peter hesitated.
“You ruined your car for us.”
Raja glanced toward the hallway.
“….”
Ned immediately whispered,
“Does that mean you’re still coming to the birthday party?”
Peter stared at him.
“Ned!”
“What?”
“The cake got destroyed!”
“We can get another one.”
Raja couldn’t help laughing.
After everything that had happened that afternoon, somehow Ned was still focused on the birthday party.
And perhaps that was exactly what they needed.
Something normal.
Something ordinary.
Even if Raja’s definition of an ordinary Saturday now apparently included driving a Camaro through a cake shop and getting released from police custody before dinner.
