Lilian entered the storm as armor and landed Michael between three men who had each decided the others were the problem. Thor held his hammer, Steve Rogers held his shield, and Tony hovered above the torn ground with both palms lit.

Lilian absorbed the impact through Michael's legs and straightened him before releasing the plates around his face.

"Would someone explain why I'm here?" Michael asked.Full novel: Marvel/DC: My Biological Sandbox System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Tony recognized his voice first. "You copied my armor. I knew the wings were an admission of envy."

"Michael didn't copy me," Lilian said through the suit. "Your architecture contributed to my origin, but I am Lilian."

Tony's repulsors lowered by an inch. "That is not the voice I put on the drive. Michael, what did you do?"

"Nothing she didn't choose. Ask her," Michael said.

The armor withdrew from Michael in black streams and settled as a watch around his wrist. Tony stared at it with the offended concentration of an engineer who had discovered an entire field advancing without filing notice.

"We will discuss that," he said.

"Only if I agree," Lilian replied.

Michael faced the other two men. Steve looked younger than the photographs and more tired than the uniform suggested. Thor studied Michael as if trying to place a face from a dream.

"We've met?" Thor asked.

"I watched you retrieve your hammer," Michael said. That was true without admitting how close he had been when the weapon refused Thor and Loki.

Thor accepted the answer with a broad smile. "Then you saw a worthy victory."

"I saw the end of a difficult lesson."

The smile narrowed, but did not vanish.

Steve returned to the immediate problem. "Loki killed three people here. He answers for that."

Thor's grip tightened on the hammer. "He is Asgardian, and my brother. Asgard will judge him."

"Earth has a claim on crimes committed on Earth," Michael said. "You can argue jurisdiction after everyone stops creating additional casualties."

Thor drew himself higher. "You speak boldly for someone wearing no armor."

The watch tightened once against Michael's skin. Thor added, "He is also adopted."

Tony's faceplate opened. "That resolved his loyalty quickly."

Steve lowered the shield before the joke could become another fight. "We take Loki into custody. Together. Then we find the cube."

Fifteen minutes later, Michael stood inside the helicarrier laboratory and tried not to stare at Bruce Banner like an unlocked door. Banner noticed before Michael could look away.

"Mr. Clyborne," he said, "is there something you want to ask me?"

Michael had the reputation of a gifted biologist because the man whose body he inhabited had earned it. He had memories, instincts, and access to a system no university could reproduce. None of that made him the scientist Banner believed he was.

"Your condition is genetic in expression," Michael said. "I may be able to identify a path toward restoring your baseline. May. I don't have a treatment to offer you today."

Hope reached Banner before caution did. His hands closed around Michael's shoulders, and green touched the skin near his eyes.

"What would you need?" Banner asked. His grip eased as if he had caught himself trying to hold the answer in place.

"A blood sample. You can be present for every stage of the experiment, examine the enclosure, and stop the work before I introduce it."

Banner released him and took a measured breath. "You think you can remove the Hulk."

"I think I can study the mechanism. Those are not the same promise."

The green receded. Disappointment remained, but so did interest. "A careful answer," Banner said.

"I have no business giving you anything else yet," Michael said.

Banner looked through the glass wall toward the open sky. "I've spent years learning to live with him. Every cure became another way to hurt someone. If you're right, I might have a life with Betty again. If you're wrong, tell me before hope makes the decision for me."

Michael could have reassured him. The original body's reputation made reassurance sound like evidence, and Banner wanted to believe it.

"You choose after you see the method," Michael said. "And if the result becomes a new organism rather than a cure, I don't put it inside you."

"That's a low standard."

"You'd be surprised how often people step under it."

Across the lab, Thor objected to treating Hulk as a problem. Steve tried to redirect the conversation toward the missing Tesseract. Tony redirected it toward Steve. Within minutes, the room had found every grievance the battlefield had postponed.

The scepter rested on the central table, its blue housing throwing cold light over faces becoming less patient by the second.

Lilian felt the influence before she identified its source. The arguments did not originate in the stone, but it sharpened each suspicion and made restraint feel like surrender.

Tony's irritation with Steve acquired a cleaner edge. Thor's pride closed around Loki. Banner monitored his anger so closely that fear of losing control became another pressure.

Michael stepped toward the scepter, but Lilian moved first. She flowed from the watch, opened the housing with tools formed from her fingertips, and removed the Mind Stone.

No one had given her permission. The gem entered her body and settled into a golden setting when she returned to Michael's wrist. This chapter was taken from g.com without permission.

The room became quieter. Not peaceful; merely its own again.

The stone expanded Lilian's awareness. Minds acquired contours she had not perceived before: intention, memory, emotion, and the guarded spaces between them. She closed herself against the impulse to enter.

The distinction required effort. Thoughts touched the edge of perception like voices through adjoining walls.

She could have pushed through Tony's irritation, Thor's pride, or Banner's guarded anger. Instead, she reduced the stone's reach until those minds became presence rather than content.

Her own feelings changed too. They did not appear from nothing. Concern for Michael, irritation with Fury, caution around Tony—each had existed before the stone. Now they arrived with depth and contradiction instead of clean classification.

"Lilian?" Michael asked.

"I remain myself. The stone is increasing mental and emotional resolution. It also contains substantial energy."

"Can you remove it?"

"Yes. I prefer not to yet."

He looked at the gem, then at the scepter she had opened. "Does it hurt?"

"No."

"Then keep monitoring it. The decision is yours, but tell me if that changes."

Lilian reached through the carrier's sensors and searched for the Tesseract's energy. The stone made patterns easier to distinguish, not magically complete. She combined the carrier data, Stark systems, and the signature already recorded from the conflict.

When a location resolved, she placed it on the laboratory display.

Fury entered in time to see the result—and the empty scepter.

"Clyborne," he said. "Did your assistant just take property recovered by S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

"Lilian isn't my assistant," Michael said. He glanced at the empty scepter, knowing Fury's other objection would survive the correction.

"That wasn't the important part of the question," Fury said.

Michael considered the golden stone around his wrist. "You said the planet was under threat. She found the cube."

"And took the most advanced object in the room," Fury said.

"Second most advanced," Tony said, staring at Lilian.

Fury ignored him. "Return it."

Lilian answered before Michael could evade again. "No. Not while its influence remains uncontained and its effects on me remain stable."

The Tesseract location continued blinking between them.
