Ivory Banner keeps a row of low chairs in their front office, built at a height that makes a waiting man look up at everybody.
Ossian had been sitting in one of them for two hours with a fragment of shell wrapped in a cloth on his knee.
Two hours in a chair like that carries a message, and it tells a man the building would rather he went home.
'They designed these chairs... somebody sat down with a drawing and made them exactly this low,' he took the weight off his bad leg, 'stay in it, that is today's job.'
The woman who came through the doors at eleven priced the room before she had finished sitting down beside him.
Paloma worked outside every guild in this city, which becomes possible once enough of them owe you money.
"Two per cent of anything recovered, and I bill for the coffee," she had her terms out before her coat was off.
'She costs money I have not got... and she is the first one here to talk to me like a client,' Ossian moved the cloth off his knee, 'say yes before she reconsiders.'
"Anger doesn't void a contract," Paloma said it while reading the addendum on her own screen, "Facts void contracts, so give me a fact."
The fact she wanted was the hidden boss, documented, with a date on it and a piece of it in the room.
'She wants the larva to exist on paper... and all I have is a piece of it in a cloth,' he turned the bundle over, 'that is the case, then.'
'Two per cent of two thousand is forty credits... and she is worth ten times that against me guessing,' Ossian watched her set the screen down, 'let her run it.'
Ruan came out at half past with two department heads behind him and a voice pitched for a room with witnesses in it.
"Our porter signed an emergency addendum," he read the phrase recoverable support asset out loud in the calmest voice in the building.
Read in that voice, in that office, the clause sounded like a filing convention rather than an instruction to leave a man underground.
'He is using the voice he used down the comm... damn it, nothing about him has moved since,' Ossian kept both hands on his knees, 'let her work.'
Paloma put the shell fragment onto the table in front of three witnesses and the wall screen behind them.
The contaminated residue matched a creature nobody had registered, from a Gate that had a completion certificate signed five days ago.
"You certified that Gate closed," Paloma tapped the certificate on the screen, "This walked out of it and through a wall on Verrick Street."
Nobody in that office looked at the fragment for more than a second, and the wall screen behind them did the rest.
A guild clerk came through the side door in the same minute holding Bastien's original equipment checklist with a case number on it.
Evidence arriving from two directions at once is worth more than either piece alone, since neither one can be called a grudge.
'Bastien did that on purpose... an old porter timing a document release to the minute,' Ossian looked at the clerk rather than at Ruan, 'he has done this before.'
Everybody in that room went quiet the way people do when they stop arguing and start calculating.
Ruan took eleven seconds and then offered a settlement, framed as a gesture toward a man the guild had failed on a paperwork level.
Paloma had been waiting for that offer since she sat down, since nobody settles a thing that did not happen.
"Two thousand four hundred credits, plus the withheld raid share," she wrote the figure down where the witnesses could see her writing it.
'That covers rent, arrears, then eight weeks of not being frightened...' Ossian kept his face flat while she wrote, 'do not smile in this room.'
Then the Jackal dropped something into his head, and the thing it offered him was Ruan.
It did not arrive as a thought about revenge, since the mask does not think in those terms at all.
What arrived was a map of the man across the table, showing an old shoulder injury and the four steps of floor between them.
'Four steps to reach him, and it has already measured them... that is the mask doing arithmetic on a person,' Ossian put both feet flat, 'the paperwork has him, so leave it alone.'
Chasing Ruan across that table would have handed the guild a violent unlicensed man in front of three witnesses.
'The evidence already has him... so the chase is the one thing that could still lose this,' Ossian sat still with his hands open, 'no.'
[The Unmasking Trial is complete]
[You were shown a rival's throat and you chose the tribute arrangement instead]
Those words hung over the table long enough for him to read them twice while the department heads signed things.
[Half of everything the Carrion Jackal earned is now yours permanently]
[The other half stays with the face, where you left it]
Mastery had been printed as one hundred percent in a diesel yard, and this was the half of it he got to keep.
'Half of it, for life... and what I keep works with my own face on,' Ossian read the figures twice, 'that changes what I am without it.'
[Identity Fracture, fourteen percent]
Fourteen was up three from the tank yard, which is what wanting a man across a table costs.
'Shit, five days of my life priced at two thousand four hundred... I would have taken half that this morning,' Ossian signed the third page, 'take it and get out.'
'Eleven to fourteen for a thought I never acted on... damn it, it charges for the wanting either way,' he stood up out of the low chair, 'noted.'
Paloma took her two per cent off the settlement before the ink had dried, then itemised the coffee she had bought that morning.
His Capability re-registration came back the same afternoon, posted on a screen in the public office.
[Strike, Personal]
[Survival, Squad]
Personal Strike sits at the bottom of the registered ladder, with Squad Survival one step above that.
'Classless three days ago... and now the city has me written down in two columns,' Ossian read the posting with his coat pocket full of credits, 'that is not nothing.'
The settlement covered his rent, the arrears, plus the forty credits for an assessment booking he no longer needed.
'Money is not the badge and it is not a licence... it buys me eight weeks before this starts again,' Ossian folded the credits into his coat, 'want the licence next, then.'
A porter worth nothing to that building five days ago now came with a filing, a settlement, plus a case number.
Then something moved across his vision that had nothing to do with any panel.
A line ran through the office wall behind the department heads, faint and structural, the way a crack looks before it becomes one.
'That wall has a fault running along it... and I am reading it straight through the plaster,' Ossian turned toward it, 'that is new, that is the mastery.'
Blood Scent had been picking wounds out of animals, and it was doing the same thing to buildings now.
'That is load bearing, and there are eleven people sitting under it... hell, nobody in here will move for me,' Ossian was on his feet before he decided to be, 'say it anyway.'
"Everybody get away from the north wall," Ossian said it loud enough to turn the whole office, with no authority in the room to back him up.
Nobody in a guild front office moves for an unlicensed man in a coat with both sleeves stitched back on, so eleven people turned and looked at him instead.
Three of them got out of their chairs anyway, which was more than he had expected from that room.
That wall split along the fault he had seen, from the floor to the ceiling, in one continuous movement.
Something came through it into the office on four limbs made of a material that took the light apart.
