At dawn, the royal plateau awakened to the first light of the new year.

Golden rays spread across the sky as people stepped out onto their courtyards and balconies, welcoming the sun with folded hands and quiet reverence.

Across the kingdom, rituals began.Full novel: Mayamandala — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The Surya clan performed their sacred fire rite, led by the patriarch.

Flames rose steady and bright as offerings were made.

Among them stood Mervil—silent, observant.

Other clans followed their own traditions, honoring the sun in ways passed down through generations.

From a modest balcony, Kairav stood beside his mother.

Together, they offered their prayers.

As the rituals concluded, the stillness gave way to life.

Doors opened.

Laughter returned.

People stepped out in new clothes, exchanging sweets and wishes.

Children ran between homes, their hands filled with treats gifted by smiling matriarchs.

The streets filled with warmth—voices, colour, and shared beginnings.

Hope lingered in the air.

Kairav walked through the markets with his mother.

Familiar faces greeted them now—people who had come to know him.

“You’ve changed,” Garima said suddenly.

Kairav glanced at her, puzzled.

“Back in the village, you hardly stepped out… and now…” She looked around as people greeted him.

“You bring me out, and speak to people.”

Kairav remained quiet.

Before he could answer, voices called out—

“Kairav!”

Karuna waved, with Megh beside her.

Arun and Seth followed close behind.

Garima smiled faintly.

“See? This is what I mean.”

“Happy New Year!” they greeted in unison.

Kairav gave a small nod.

Karuna looked toward Garima.

“Is she your relative?”

“She is my mother,” Kairav replied.

“Oh! Happy New Year, Aunty,” Karuna said, bowing respectfully.

The others followed.

“So, you’re all his friends?” Garima asked.

“Yes,” they replied together—before Kairav could speak.

“Mother… they’re my batchmates,” Kairav added awkwardly.

“Karuna and Arun are in my class. Megh and Seth are in another.”

Garima smiled.

Something within her eased.

Thank God… you heard my prayers.

Her eyes softened as she watched Arun and Seth casually throw their arms around Kairav’s shoulders.

He’s not alone… he has friends now.

“Aunty, have you seen the musical play near the fountain?” Megh asked.

Garima shook her head. This chapter is updated first at g.com.

“Then come with us,” Karuna said, gently taking her hand.

Megh took the other.

Kairav was dragged along by Arun and Seth.

At the fountain, young performers filled the air with music.

Coins clinked as passersby rewarded them.

Laughter and rhythm blended effortlessly.

“Yani would’ve liked this,” Megh said.

“She’s busy,” Seth replied.

“Preparing to perform in front of the Queen.”

Karuna nodded.

“She must be overwhelmed.”

“Who is Yani?” Garima asked.

There was a faint shift in her tone—something uneasy.

“She’s our friend,” Karuna said easily.

“A Shakta noble.”

“A noble… dancer?” Garima frowned slightly.

“Yes,” Megh and Karuna replied without hesitation.

Kairav noticed the change in her expression—but said nothing.

They continued through the market, meeting others and exchanging greetings.

At one stall, Kairav bought clothes for his mother.

Garima smiled—but the unease remained.

The past had stirred.

By evening, as Garima spoke warmly with the landlady, Kairav prepared to leave.

“I’ll be at the fortress,” he said.

“I’ll return before dinner.”

She nodded.

As evening descended, the Royal Fortress transformed.

What once stood as a seat of power now breathed like a living celebration.

Golden lamps lined the corridors, their flames dancing against carved stone.

Silken drapes in crimson, peacock blue, and molten gold flowed from the pillars.

The air carried incense, wine, and the aroma of rich delicacies.

Laughter echoed.

Music tuned itself.

Tonight—the kingdom celebrated.

The Royal Hall stood resplendent.

Nobles, merchants, and clan heads gathered in jewel-toned silks garments, adorned in gold and gemstones.

At the far end— the Queen sat elevated, composed.

To her right, Mervil rested with effortless ease.

Beside him, Sendrav remained upright, watchful even in celebration.

To the left, musicians prepared—tablas, veenas, flutes—each waiting.

Near them sat Vaijayanti, the dance Guru and head of the Dance Academy, dignified and observant.

At one grand entrance—

Kairav stood. New chapters come out on g.com first.

Still.

Composed.

No longer a shepherd…

not yet fully of this world.

The lights dimmed.

The murmurs faded.

The first note struck.

The tabla grounded the rhythm.

The flute followed, weaving melody through the hall.

Strings layered emotion over structure.

The music unfolded—patient, deliberate.

Yani entered with the formation.

Grace in motion.

The song carried her— from innocence to awareness, from pride to quiet longing, and finally to a joy that felt earned.

Each movement spoke.

Each expression held meaning.

And at the peak— she stilled.

Then completed the final steps—precise, grounded.

The song settled.

And for a moment— she was the song.

Applause rose.

The Queen stood.

So did the hall.

Vaijayanti watched with pride.

Sendrav’s gaze shifted.

He noticed something— the bracelet.

“Is that…”

“So, you finally noticed,” Mervil said with a faint smirk.

Sendrav’s eyes moved toward the entrance.

Toward Kairav.

“Interesting…”

Mervil leaned back slightly.

“The awkward kid is learning social skills,” he said lightly.

“Good for him.”

The celebration continued.

Music rose again.

Laughter returned.

And somewhere beyond the fortress— in the darkness untouched by light— something had already begun to move.
