The snowy backroads of Long Island were pitch black, illuminated only by the sweeping headlights of Howard Stark’s customized sedan.

From his crib in Louisiana, Max watched the hypnotic fall of snow through the eyes of the Shadowkhan, securely tethered to the darkness pooling around Howard and Maria’s feet.

Then, a lone motorcycle headlight cut through the flurries in the rearview mirror.Full novel: MCAU – SHADOW AND LIGHT — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It approached with terrifying speed.

The rider, clad in dark tactical gear with a metal arm gleaming under the streetlamps, pulled alongside the sedan.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the Winter Soldier struck.

A sickening screech of metal and rubber filled the air as the assassin disabled the front tire.

The car careened violently off the asphalt.

Max’s perspective spun wildly as the heavy vehicle smashed head-on into a massive tree.

The crunch of the chassis and the shattering of glass were deafening.

In the driver’s seat, Howard groaned, blood pouring from his forehead.

Dazed and desperate, he managed to force his door open, collapsing onto the freezing snow.

He dragged himself forward, gasping for air.

“Help my wife,” Howard pleaded, staring up at the figure approaching him.

“Please…

help.”

The Winter Soldier stood completely silent, his face an emotionless mask.

He reached down, grabbed Howard by the hair, and hoisted him up.

Back in the farmhouse, Max’s tiny hands gripped the edge of his crib so hard his knuckles turned white.

His adult mind screamed at him to act, to command the ninjas to surge from the shadows and tear the assassin apart.

The sheer brutality of what he was witnessing clawed at his conscience.

*These are human beings,* he thought frantically.

*I have the power to stop this.*

But logic—cold, calculated, and terrifyingly necessary—forced him to stay his hand.

*If I save them, everything changes,* Max consoled himself, his heart hammering against his ribs.

*S.H.I.E.L.D.

will investigate.

Hydra will know Howard survived.

Tony will never become Iron Man.

The universe will burn to Thanos in two decades.*

Beyond the catastrophic consequences of changing history, there was a stark, physical reality.

The Shadowkhan were 1,400 miles away from Louisiana.

Their connection to Max’s Mana Heart was stretched to its absolute limit.

Their structural integrity was degraded; they were little more than smoke and fragile magic right now.

The Winter Soldier, fueled by the Super Soldier Serum and decades of ruthless conditioning, would tear the weakened ninjas to shreds in seconds.

He couldn’t stop Bucky Barnes even if he tried.

Max forced himself to watch.

He owed it to them to bear witness.

The Winter Soldier’s metal fist slammed into Howard’s face.

Once.

Twice.

The sickening sound of bone crushing echoed through the quiet woods.

Howard Stark slumped, lifeless, into the snow.

Bucky callously dragged Howard’s body back to the car, propping him against the steering wheel to stage the accident.

Then, the assassin moved to the passenger side.

Maria Stark was barely conscious, whimpering in terror.

Bucky’s flesh hand wrapped around her throat, cutting off her breath in a silent, methodical execution.

Max felt a tear roll down his infant cheek.

*I’m sorry.

I will fix this.

I promise.*

Bucky walked to the trunk, bypassed the lock, and extracted the glowing blue pouches of the Super Soldier Serum.

He aimed his weapon at the streetlamp camera, fired a single shot, and disappeared into the snowy night on his motorcycle.

*”Follow him,”* Max ordered one of his unassigned tracker ninjas.

*”Do not engage.”* You are reading on g.com, the official source.

The shadow ninja detached from the wreckage, melting into the long, distorted shadow Bucky’s motorcycle cast against the snowbanks.

It trailed the Winter Soldier through the freezing night until they arrived at a hidden, brutalist concrete bunker miles away.

Waiting inside the dimly lit facility was a younger, sharply dressed Alexander Pierce.

Pierce took the metal briefcase from the assassin, his eyes gleaming with dark ambition as he verified the blue pouches.

He offered Bucky no words of praise, only a curt nod toward a waiting extraction helicopter on the helipad outside.

As Pierce and the Winter Soldier climbed aboard and the chopper lifted off into the night sky, incendiary charges detonated throughout the bunker below, entirely erasing any trace of the hand-off.

Max tried to maintain his connection as the helicopter sped rapidly north, but within minutes, a sharp, static-like pain flared in his mind.

The tether snapped.

*”Master,”* Alpha’s calm voice echoed in his consciousness.

*”The target has exited the 1,500-mile operational radius.

The projected Shadowkhan has safely dissipated and reconstructed itself within the Dimension.”*

Max sighed internally.

Hydra had the serum.

Within the hour, the flashing red and blue lights of local law enforcement and S.H.I.E.L.D.

vehicles illuminated the wreckage back on Long Island.

Max’s remaining ninjas stayed flawlessly still, melded seamlessly into the shadows cast by the Starks’ lifeless bodies.

Through their senses, Max listened to the investigation unfold.

To the local police, it was a horrific but straightforward tragedy: an elderly man lost control on a slick, icy road.

But S.H.I.E.L.D.

was there, and within S.H.I.E.L.D.

was Hydra.

Agents in sharp suits quickly took over the perimeter.

Max watched as a S.H.I.E.L.D.

operative subtly inspected Howard’s deeply caved-in skull and the distinct bruising on Maria’s neck.

The agent simply nodded to his partner, pulling a tarp over the car.

“Blunt force trauma from the steering wheel, and whiplash for the passenger,” the lead agent declared loudly to the local precinct captain.

“Tragic accident.

We’ll handle the transport and the press.”

The missing serum was never mentioned.

The assassination was swept under the rug with terrifying efficiency.

The bodies were loaded into body bags, and the Shadowkhan slipped silently inside with them, resting in the absolute darkness.

Over the next few days, the ninjas endured the cold steel of the morgue and the invasive procedures of the autopsy, obeying Max’s strict order to remain perfectly undetected.

Miles away from the morgue, in the sprawling, empty halls of the Stark mansion, twenty-one-year-old Tony Stark sat on the edge of his bed.

Obadiah Stane, looking suitably grim and smelling faintly of scotch, had just delivered the news.

The words “car accident” and “didn’t make it” hung in the air, suffocating the room.

Stane had patted Tony’s shoulder, offered hollow condolences about the company, and left him alone.

Tony didn’t cry immediately.

The shock was a heavy, leaden blanket wrapping around his mind.

He stared blankly at the floor, his breathing shallow.

Then, the memory of the previous night played in his head like a scratched record.

*”I know you’re hiding something, Tony.

But I also know…

I love you.”*

Tony squeezed his eyes shut, his hands trembling.

He remembered the exact way he had rolled his eyes.

He remembered the defensive, sarcastic quip he had thrown back at his father, desperate to protect his own fragile ego.

He hadn’t said it back.

He had let his father walk out the door, into the snow, and into his grave, carrying the weight of his son’s mocking indifference.

And then there was his mother.

The image of Maria Stark—sitting elegantly at the grand piano, her soft smile, the gentle way she had defended him just moments before they left—crashed into his mind, shattering whatever composure he had left.

She had been the only real warmth in this massive, cold house.

She was his buffer, his confidante, the parent who loved him without conditions or expectations.

He hadn’t even hugged her goodbye.

A ragged, agonizing sob finally tore its way out of Tony’s throat.

He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking violently.

The genius, billionaire, playboy prodigy was gone, replaced by a terrified, guilt-ridden boy who realized too late that he had thrown away his last chance.

The grief was absolute.

It would build the walls around his heart.

It would fuel the reckless drinking, the endless parade of women, and the arrogant facade he would wear like a suit of armor long before he ever built one out of iron.

Three days later, the rain poured relentlessly over a private, highly guarded cemetery in New York.

Tony Stark stood entirely alone under a black umbrella, a vast sea of black-clad businessmen, politicians, and S.H.I.E.L.D.

brass standing a respectful distance behind him.

He didn’t hear a word of the priest’s eulogy.

He just watched the two polished mahogany caskets resting over the open earth.

Eventually, the crowd dispersed.

Stane tried to guide Tony away, but Tony merely shook him off, standing vigil until the groundskeepers began their morbid work.

He watched the dirt hit the wood.

He watched until the graves were entirely filled and patted down.

Only then did Tony turn and walk away, his heart a locked vault.

Six feet under the wet earth, in the suffocating darkness of the sealed caskets, four pairs of red eyes snapped open.

The Shadowkhan prepared to shift the bodies.

But before they could act, a subtle movement above ground made them pause.

*”Hold,”* Max commanded.

Through the eyes of a ninja peeking out from the shadow of a nearby, weeping willow tree, Max watched a classic, unassuming car pull up to the edge of the cemetery.

Two figures stepped out, moving slowly through the relentless rain.

It was an elderly couple.

As they drew closer to the fresh graves, Max’s infant breath hitched.

The woman, frail but standing with undeniable dignity, was Peggy Carter.

And the man holding her umbrella, his face lined with decades of quiet, hidden history, was an elderly Steve Rogers.

Captain America.

The old couple stood in absolute silence over the mounds of wet earth.

Peggy leaned heavily against Steve, her grief palpable, while Steve simply stared at the headstones with a heavy, sorrowful resignation.

They stayed for a long while, mourning the brilliant, flawed man who had helped shape both of their lives.

Eventually, Steve gently guided Peggy back toward the car.

But just before he opened the passenger door, the old Captain paused.

He turned his head, his sharp, weathered eyes locking perfectly onto the exact shadow beneath the willow tree where Max’s ninja was hiding.

A chill ran down Max’s spine.

Old Steve offered a tiny, almost imperceptible nod to the shadows, and got into the car.

Max’s mind raced as the taillights faded into the rain.

There was absolutely no way Steve Rogers, even with the Super Soldier Serum, could magically sense a being of pure shadow from another dimension.

It didn’t make sense.

Unless…

unless Max himself told Steve about this exact moment somewhere in the distant future.

A strange, comforting realization settled over Max, easing the tremendous guilt he had carried since the night of the crash.

*Even he didn’t save them,* Max thought, staring at the fresh graves through his ninja’s eyes.

*Old Captain America lived through this timeline.

He knew Howard was going to die tonight, he lived in this era, and he still let it happen.

It really was for the greater good.*

If Captain America could bear the weight of letting history run its agonizing course, then so could Max.

*”Take them,”* Max’s voice finally echoed in the minds of his Shadowkhan.

The ninjas reached out, wrapping their shadowy forms entirely around the cold bodies of Howard and Maria Stark.

The physical world blurred, replaced by the silvery mist of the Shadow Dimension.

In the dimension, Alpha was waiting.

Time instantly stopped for the two bodies, freezing them in perfect stasis.

In Louisiana, Max finally let himself sleep.

He had secured their bodies, but he couldn’t resurrect them yet.

Before the Starks could wake up, he needed to grow his mana and radically enhance the Shadow Dimension, transforming the cold, empty void into a space livable enough to provide them with air, warmth, and daily necessities for their hidden exile.

Until he could build them a true sanctuary, they would stay in stasis.
