Summary: Mara steals Morrant’s biometric imprint during a staged spill and uses a service corridor to scan it.
The restricted schedule reveals Project Undertow will strike during Founders’ Tide, with floodgates, sealed exits, and armed cleanup teams.
The hand around Mara’s wrist tightens as the ballroom disappears into black.
“Do not let them scan you.”
The voice is low, close enough that breath touches her ear.
Mara drives her heel backward.
The stranger moves before impact.
Fingers release.
Mara twists toward the sound, but bodies collide around her.
Someone curses.
A woman screams when a glass breaks.
The orchestra remains silent, leaving only the scrape of shoes and the sudden alarm beginning somewhere above the ceiling.
Mara reaches for the person again and catches fabric.
A sleeve.
Smooth.
Damp.
Then the cloth tears free.
“Mara.”
Dorian’s voice cuts through the dark.
She sees him only as a pale shape moving between the guests.
His hand finds her elbow, hard and steady.
“Did you see who grabbed you?”
“Not clearly.”
“Did they hurt you?”
“No.”
His fingers shift to her wrist.
He checks the pulse point, then turns her hand palm up.
The thin white scar across her right palm flashes in the emergency lights as the chandeliers begin to glow one by one.
Celeste is three steps away, one hand pressed to the wall.
Her silver hair remains smooth.
Her red lips have lost their smile.
The wineglass in Mara’s other hand is gone.
So is the fourth microphone hidden inside it.
Dorian notices the empty fingers.
His gaze moves to Celeste, then back to Mara.
“What happened to your glass?”
“Someone took it.”
“Who?”
“I told you. I didn’t see.”
A service door opens near the musicians.
Two black-suited security men enter with handheld scanners.
Their screens cast blue light across the guests.
Mara’s skin tightens.
Do not let them scan you.
She looks at the scanners, then at Celeste.
Celeste sees the glance.
“There was a breach in the lighting system. Everyone stays where they are until we know whether it was technical.”
“Your people are scanning guests,” Mara says.
“For weapons.”
“And for other things?”
Celeste’s eyes sharpen.
Dorian steps between them.
“She stays with me.”
“That is precisely what concerns me,” Celeste says.
The scanner nearest them lifts its device.
Mara moves first.
She catches the stem of a champagne glass from a passing tray and lets it fall.
The glass strikes the black stone and bursts.
The server flinches.
The scanner swings down.
Mara turns her shoulder into him, not hard enough to injure, only enough to send his hand toward the spill.
The device skims across the floor.
Champagne spreads beneath the shoes of three guests.
A woman shrieks and grabs the nearest man for balance.
He catches her.
Someone behind them bumps the tray.
More glasses fall.
The room breaks apart.
Mara drops with the confusion.
Her knees touch the floor.
Her hair falls forward, hiding her face from the balcony camera.
She reaches beneath the edge of a linen-covered table and finds the missing wineglass.
The embedded microphone is still attached to the base.
A smear of blood darkens the rim.
Celeste’s.
Mara closes her hand around it.
Dorian catches her arm and pulls her upright.
“You cut yourself.”
“Glass.”
He looks at her palm.
The scar is intact.
No new blood.
His gaze drops to the wineglass hidden against her hip.
Mara keeps her smile in place.
“Your security is making everyone nervous,” she says.
“No, only the guilty.”
“Then you should be watching the scanners.”
His pale gray eyes hold hers for one dangerous second.
He knows she is lying.
He does not know about what.
The security men recover the device.
Celeste speaks to them in a calm voice that sends them toward the service doors.
Minister Halden complains loudly about the interruption, and the officials around him gather close, eager to turn danger into gossip.
Listening.
A thin burst of static touches her hidden earpiece.
Then Sana speaks.
“Report.”
Mara keeps her face angled toward Dorian’s shoulder.
“The lights failed. An operative warned me against scanning.”
“Did you identify the operative?”
“No.”
“Then stop pursuing them.”
Sana’s voice is clipped.
It carries no relief.
Mara looks toward the service corridor.
“I have access to Celeste’s biometric material.”
“Obtain the full control architecture.”
Not the schedule.
The architecture.
Mara closes her fingers around the glass.
“Understood.”
“And Mara?”
“Yes?”
“Do not improvise another delay. The window is closing.”
The channel cuts.
Mara lets Dorian guide her away from the broken glass.
His hand remains at her waist.
His body blocks the closest camera from seeing what she carries.
It should feel like protection.
It feels like another locked door.
Celeste approaches before they reach the edge of the dance floor.
“Your wife has a talent for creating distractions,” she tells Dorian.
“She learned from your people.”
Celeste’s red mouth curves without warmth.
“The spill was clumsy.”
“It worked.”
“Only because your guests are accustomed to being handled.”
Mara lifts the wineglass slightly.
“You seem upset.”
Celeste’s gaze drops to it.
For the first time tonight, Mara sees recognition.
Not of the missing microphone.
Of the blood.
Celeste’s hand rises toward her throat, touching the thin gold chain there.
A small movement.
A check.
A habit.
Mara steps closer.
“I would hate to think you lost something important.”
Celeste’s eyes meet hers.
“What do you have?”
“Four minutes are over.”
Dorian’s voice is quiet, but the warning underneath it is not.
Celeste ignores him.
“You should return what you took.”
“Perhaps I should.”
Mara sets the wineglass on a passing tray.
Celeste watches the movement.
Her attention follows the glass.
That is enough.
Mara turns as if to leave.
Her left shoulder brushes Celeste’s right hand.
The contact lasts less than a second.
The blood on the rim transfers to Mara’s glove.
Celeste realizes it too late.
Dorian’s hand closes around Mara’s waist.
“Back to our table.”
“Of course,” Mara says.
They move through the crowd.
Mara keeps her posture relaxed while the glove presses against her palm.
The blood is already drying.
At the table, Dorian pulls out her chair.
His face is composed for the room.
His voice is not.
“What did you steal?”
“Nothing.”
“Your hand says otherwise.”
Mara sits.
“You are watching my hands now?”
“I watch everything.”
“Then watch Celeste.”
He does.
Across the room, Celeste is speaking to a security officer.
Her eyes remain fixed on Mara.
Dorian leans close enough that his mouth nearly touches Mara’s ear.
“If you intend to betray me, choose a moment that does not put a weapon against your throat.”
“If I intended to betray you, you would already be bleeding.”
His fingers flex once against the back of her chair.
“Is that meant to reassure me?”
“No.”
A waiter arrives with fresh champagne.
Mara lifts one glass, then sets it down untouched.
“I need the washroom.”
“You need to stay where I can see you.”
“Then escort me.”
His gaze drops to her mouth.
“You enjoy making demands in public.” New chapters come out on g.com first.
“I enjoy making them where you cannot pretend they were suggestions.”
A muscle shifts in his jaw.
Celeste turns away from the officer.
Dorian stands.
“We are leaving.”
Mara rises with him, but instead of moving toward the main corridor, she catches the edge of the tablecloth.
The cloth pulls.
A stack of plates slides from the service tray beside them.
Porcelain crashes across the floor.
The waiter swears.
Guests recoil.
The nearest guard steps toward the noise.
Mara uses the opening.
She slips behind a curtain marked PRIVATE and into the service passage.
Dorian follows.
She hears him call her name, but the ballroom swallows it beneath fresh shouting.
The corridor is narrow, lit by red emergency strips.
Kitchens open on one side, empty storage rooms on the other.
Mara walks quickly, keeping her heels quiet on the rubber flooring.
At the first junction, she finds a steel door with a maintenance panel.
The stolen blood has dried dark across her glove.
She presses two fingers to the scanner.
The panel flashes red.
Mara swears under her breath and turns the glove inside out, exposing the bloodstained lining.
She presses again.
The scanner pulses amber.
A line appears.
BIOMETRIC RESIDUE ACCEPTED.
The lock releases.
Mara slips inside and shuts the door before Dorian reaches the junction.
The room beyond is an old service control station, barely large enough for a desk and two people.
Pipes run along the ceiling.
A dead terminal sits beneath a faded evacuation map.
The map shows Meridian Hall connected to the harbor grid by three sealed transit routes.
Three gates.
One line marked in black.
Mara pulls the bloodied glove from her hand.
The terminal has a shallow reader built into its side.
She places the glove over it.
The screen wakes.
HELIO ACCESS LAYER: MORANT.
She thinks of Celeste’s face when Mara asked what Elias carried.
She thinks of the missing smile and the sudden touch to the gold chain.
The terminal requests a second factor.
Mara removes the thin metal clasp from her watch strap.
Elias’s schematic fragment is hidden inside it, folded until the paper is no thicker than a blade.
She places the fragment against the reader.
The terminal accepts it.
A directory opens.
UNDERTOW CONTROL PARTITION.
Mara’s breath stops for one beat.
She taps the first file.
A black screen fills with white text.
FOUNDERS’ TIDE ACTIVATION WINDOW: 23:40
CIVIC CEREMONY CONCLUSION: 22:55
PASSENGER DENSITY ESTIMATE: 41,870
PRIMARY FLOODGATE SEQUENCE: HARBOR EAST, OLD QUAY, GLASSWARD LOWER LINE
She scrolls.
EXIT CONTROL: REMOTE SEAL
TRANSIT POWER: MAINTAINED UNTIL LOCK CONFIRMATION
EMERGENCY RELEASE: DISABLED UPON FIRST FLOODGATE BREACH
Mara reads the lines twice.
The city’s buried network is not being shut down to control a riot.
It is being turned into a sealed container.
Another file opens beneath her hand.
CLEANUP TEAMS: SIX
ENTRY ROUTES: SERVICE SHAFTS 3, 7, 9, 12
ARMAMENT: LIVE
OBJECTIVE: WITNESS REMOVAL, RECORD RECOVERY, NARRATIVE CONTROL
Mara’s fingers go cold.
The cursor blinks at the bottom of the page.
AUTHORIZED CONFIRMATION PAIR REQUIRED.
DORIAN VALE: CONFIRMED.
MARA KESSLER: PENDING.
A sound comes from the corridor.
Not Dorian’s measured steps.
These are quicker.
More than one person.
Mara copies the schedule to the hidden memory strip beneath her watch strap.
The terminal begins to erase its access log.
The door handle moves.
She reaches for the emergency release, but the system changes before she can touch it.
A new line appears beneath the confirmation pair.
CONFIRMATION SUBJECT LOCATED.
Then the lock seals from the outside.
Hello everyone!
I would probably pause uploading Pandora to focus on Midnight.
I was just about to call it a day when WN writers from Discord told me that gaining more readers could be sped up by mass uploading.
I usually tend to have a boring routine to look forward to everyday but ig I’ll be prioritizing completion these coming few days.
Like I said, it will be about 80 chapters and I decided to pick Midnight since it seemed a lighter read than the other.
I have until chapter 25 ready and next 5 chapters will follow as well.
Ig I’ll be leaving another note explaining it again but probably no more talking is needed
Anyways, thats it with me!
Hope we will cross paths here on WN again.
