Dusk Glow took a few cautious steps backward, keeping a close eye on Nightmare Moon.
The five stone spheres were bundled together on his back, making it difficult for him to move freely.
Nightmare Moon smiled coldly.
A chilling aura surrounded her as she slowly raised her horn.
Dark blue magic gathered at its tip.
“You really think you can stand against me all by yourself?”
Her voice was filled with scorn.
Dusk Glow took a deep breath and planted all four hooves firmly on the ground.
The weight of the stone spheres made things difficult, but his expression remained determined.
“I won’t let you do whatever you want!”
With a sudden burst of strength, he swung the bundle from his back and hurled the stone spheres toward Nightmare Moon.
They tore through the air with a loud whistling sound.
Nightmare Moon merely scoffed.
A black magical barrier appeared in front of her.
The stone spheres slammed into it with a heavy boom and bounced harmlessly away.
Before Dusk Glow could react, Nightmare Moon swept her hoof through the air.
Several black beams shot toward him like arrows.
Dusk Glow immediately switched into his pegasus form.
He twisted his body and flew low across the floor, narrowly slipping past the incoming attacks while closing the distance between himself and Nightmare Moon.
He was almost within reach.
Then Nightmare Moon vanished.
“Not good!”
Dusk Glow spun around in midair.
As he expected, Nightmare Moon had reappeared behind him.
A wave of dark magic rushed toward him.
Dusk Glow twisted sideways, but the attack still clipped his wing.
Pain shot through him.
His flight became unstable, and he began to fall.
Just before he hit the ground, Dusk Glow switched into his unicorn form.
Magic surged through his body, slowing his fall and allowing him to land safely.
He quickly raised his head.
I can’t keep fighting like this.
Dusk Glow concentrated his magic around his body.
A bright white shield formed around him.
Nightmare Moon attacked again.
This time, countless black spikes filled the air and rained down on him.
Dusk Glow raised his shield and forced his way through them.
One after another, the spikes crashed against the barrier.
He kept moving.
He waited for an opening.
Then he saw one.
Dusk Glow suddenly accelerated.
As soon as he reached Nightmare Moon, his horn flashed brilliantly.
He drove himself straight into her horn.
BOOM!
The collision forced Nightmare Moon several steps backward.
A flicker of surprise crossed her face.
“Perhaps I underestimated you.”
She smiled coldly.
“It’s only been a month, yet you’ve already changed this much.”
Nightmare Moon raised her horn again.
A massive amount of magic began gathering above her.
Dusk Glow immediately sensed the danger.
His horn glowed brightly as he strengthened his shield.
The next instant, Nightmare Moon unleashed her attack.
A gigantic beam of dark magic surged toward him like a raging tide.
It slammed into his white barrier.
The shield shook violently.
Its light began to fade.
Cracks spread across its surface.
Dusk Glow gritted his teeth and poured every bit of magic he had into it.
He refused to give up.
But the difference in power was simply too great.
His shield shattered.
The remaining force sent him flying across the chamber.
He crashed hard into a stone pillar before dropping to the floor.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth and stained the fur on his chest.
Nightmare Moon slowly approached him.
“Is that all you’ve got?”
Dusk Glow struggled to stand.
Every part of his body screamed with pain, but he forced himself back onto his hooves.
“No…”
He was breathing heavily.
“I won’t…”
“I won’t give up.”
He remembered the promise he had made to Princess Celestia.
Every soul deserved a chance to be saved.
He had promised to help her.
And he intended to keep that promise.
No matter what.
At that moment, something inside Dusk Glow changed.
His heart filled with determination.
A fire called hope burned brightly within his eyes.
He would save Luna.
He would repair the bond between the two sisters.
He would not give up.
Nearby, the five stone spheres that had been wrapped in cloth lay forgotten on the floor.
Neither Dusk Glow nor Nightmare Moon noticed the faint glow beginning to appear from within them.
The light gradually grew brighter.
Then suddenly…
The castle doors burst open.
The Mane Six rushed inside.
Twilight immediately spotted Dusk Glow.
Her heart sank when she saw the blood on his chest and the state he was in.
“Dusk Glow!”
She rushed toward him.
The others followed close behind and quickly placed themselves between Dusk Glow and Nightmare Moon.
Twilight looked him over anxiously.
“Are you all right?”
Dusk Glow forced a smile.
“I’m fine.”
He glanced at the others.
“At least you made it here.”
Applejack flicked her tail.
“That’s mighty brave of you, facing her all by yourself.”
Fluttershy hurried over and carefully examined Dusk Glow’s injuries.
“You’re hurt so badly. Please don’t move.”
Rainbow Dash immediately spread her wings.
“She hurt my friend!”
She prepared to charge.
Applejack grabbed her tail before she could take off.
“Easy there, Rainbow.”
Dusk Glow pointed toward the bundle lying on the ground.
“Forget about me for now.”
“Twilight, the Elements of Harmony are in that bundle.”
He frowned.
“But I don’t know how to use them.”
Twilight immediately reached for the bundle with her magic.
Before she could touch it, Nightmare Moon spread her wings.
Her teal eyes burned with fury.
“What a touching reunion.”
A powerful gust blasted outward from her wings, forcing the ponies to stagger.
“It’s a shame you’ll never get to use those little toys.”
Her horn flashed.
A brilliant purple-black beam struck the bundle.
The cloth tore apart.
The five stone spheres were blasted in different directions.
Then they struck the ground.
Fragments scattered across the floor.
“No!”
Dusk Glow tried to rush toward them, but a wave of pain shot through his body and forced him to stop.
He stared helplessly at the shattered Elements.
His heart sank.
Princess Celestia…
I failed you.
Twilight and the others stared in disbelief.
The legendary Elements of Harmony had been destroyed.
Nightmare Moon raised her head triumphantly.
“You foolish little ponies really thought you could defeat me.”
“Now you will never see your princess again.”
“And you will never see the sun.”
Her smile widened.
“From this moment on, the world will know only eternal night!”
Her laughter echoed through the ancient castle.
Twilight stood frozen.
Then something occurred to her.
She looked at the shattered Elements.
Then she looked at her friends.
Her eyes widened.
A tiny spark of realization appeared in them.
She stepped forward.
“Applejack, who reassured me when I was in doubt, represents the spirit of… Honesty!”
“Fluttershy, who tamed the manticore with her compassion, represents the spirit of… Kindness!”
“Pinkie Pie, who banished fear by laughing in the face of danger, represents the spirit of… Laughter!”
“Rarity, who comforted a sorrowful serpent with a meaningful gift, represents the spirit of… Generosity!”
“And Rainbow Dash, who couldn’t abandon her friends for her own heart’s desire, represents the spirit of… Loyalty!”
“The spirits of these five ponies got us through every challenge you threw at us.”
The fragments of the destroyed Elements suddenly began to glow.
Nightmare Moon’s smile disappeared.
“But there are only five!”
“Where is the sixth Element?”
“The spark was supposed to reveal it!”
“It did!”
Twilight looked toward her friends.
“But it wasn’t the kind of spark you were expecting.”
She took a breath.
“When I realized how happy I was to see you, and how much I truly cared about each of you, I finally understood.”
“You had all become my friends.”
“That was the spark.”
“The sixth Element is Magic!”
The fragments rose from the ground.
Twilight then turned toward Dusk Glow.
“And Dusk Glow…”
He blinked.
“Me?”
Twilight nodded.
“You were the one who told me from the very beginning that friendship was built on trust.”
“You believed in my theories when others didn’t.”
“And when Nightmare Moon appeared, you still stood against her because you believed there was goodness left inside her.”
Dusk Glow stared at her in surprise.
The five glowing fragments flew toward the other ponies and began circling them.
Dusk Glow waited.
Nothing happened.
He glanced down at himself.
I don’t have one.
For a brief moment, disappointment flickered through his mind.
But he quickly smiled.
It didn’t matter.
He had already made his choice.
He wanted to help them, not claim a place for himself.
Twilight stood beside her friends as the magic continued to grow.
“Our friendship helped us overcome every challenge.”
Nightmare Moon’s expression darkened.
“This is impossible!”
The glowing fragments suddenly flew around the Mane Five.
Each one transformed into a beautiful necklace bearing a gemstone that matched the pony’s special talent.
A stone sphere appeared high above Twilight.
A six-pointed star was engraved at its center.
The sphere glowed brighter and brighter.
Nightmare Moon stared upward.
“What is happening?!”
The six ponies slowly rose into the air.
The sphere above Twilight transformed into a magnificent crown bearing the same six-pointed star.
The Elements unleashed their power.
A brilliant rainbow burst from the six ponies.
It spiraled through the air before shooting straight toward Nightmare Moon.
“No!”
Nightmare Moon screamed as the rainbow surrounded her.
The six ponies remained suspended in the air.
Twilight’s eyes opened, glowing with brilliant white light.
Then another stream of rainbow energy appeared.
Instead of striking Nightmare Moon, it wrapped itself around Dusk Glow.
Warmth spread through his entire body.
The pain disappeared.
His wounds began healing.
Strength returned to his limbs.
Dusk Glow stared in astonishment.
He remembered something.
That rainbow…
Wasn’t I surrounded by something like this when I first arrived in Equestria?
Before he could think any further, a brilliant white light filled the chamber.
When it faded, the six ponies slowly descended.
Dusk Glow immediately hurried over to help them.
“Is everypony all right?”
“Did anypony get hurt?”
Thankfully, none of them seemed seriously injured.
Rarity suddenly looked behind herself.
“My tail!”
She gasped.
“It’s back!”
The others looked down at their new necklaces.
Each gemstone matched their cutie mark.
Applejack smiled.
“So Ah guess we really do represent the spirits of friendship.”
She looked toward Twilight.
“I reckon that wasn’t just some theory after all.”
A gentle voice answered from nearby.
“Indeed.”
Everypony turned.
The sun began rising beyond the castle windows.
Warm golden light poured into the ruined hall.
A brilliant white glow appeared in front of them.
Princess Celestia stepped gracefully out of the light.
“Princess Celestia!”
Twilight and Dusk Glow exclaimed together.
The other five ponies immediately bowed.
Twilight, however, rushed forward and hugged her teacher.
Celestia warmly nuzzled her.
“Hello, Twilight, my faithful student.”
“I knew you could do it.”
Twilight looked up at her, her expression full of relief and a little frustration.
“But you told me this was only a legend.”
Celestia smiled.
“I only told you to make some friends.”
“That was enough.”
Her expression softened.
“I knew Nightmare Moon would return.”
“And I knew the magic within you could defeat her.”
“But you could only awaken that magic once you truly understood the power of friendship.”
Celestia’s gaze shifted toward Dusk Glow.
Warm approval appeared in her eyes.
“And you, Dusk Glow…”
“Your wisdom and courage have surpassed even my expectations.”
Dusk Glow blinked.
He hadn’t expected the princess to single him out.
“You’re too kind, Princess.”
“I only did what I believed was right.”
Celestia gently shook her head.
“You did much more than that.”
“You helped Twilight understand the true meaning of friendship.”
“And when you stood against Nightmare Moon, even knowing how badly outmatched you were, you refused to give up.”
“That kind of courage and determination is something to be proud of.”
Warmth spread through Dusk Glow’s chest.
He smiled sincerely.
“I couldn’t have done it without them.”
He looked toward the Mane Six.
“They’re the ones who helped Twilight understand friendship.”
Celestia smiled warmly.
The Mane Six proudly exchanged smiles.
Then Celestia’s expression softened.
“Perhaps she has learned something from this as well.”
She looked toward a pile of broken armor.
The pile shifted.
A dark blue alicorn slowly lifted her head.
Her expression was filled with shame and regret.
She looked at Celestia.
Celestia walked toward her.
“It has been a thousand years since I last saw you like this, Luna.”
Celestia knelt before her.
“Let us put the past behind us.”
“Come home.”
“Rule Equestria with me again, little sister.”
“Sister?!”
The Mane Six gasped.
Only Dusk Glow, who had known Luna’s identity from the beginning, remained relatively calm.
Instead, he looked at Luna with curiosity.
So this is Princess Luna’s true form.
Celestia extended a hoof toward her sister.
“Will you accept my friendship?”
Luna’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry, sister.”
“I missed you so much.”
She rushed forward and threw her forelegs around Celestia.
“I missed you too.”
Celestia held her sister tightly.
After a thousand years apart, the two princesses were finally reunited.
Dusk Glow watched quietly with a warm smile.
The broken bond between the sisters had finally begun to heal.
The Mane Six were deeply moved as well.
Tears filled their eyes.
Pinkie Pie, naturally, was crying harder than everypony else.
Her tears were practically spraying everywhere.
“This is so beautiful!”
For a moment, it seemed like everything was finally over.
Then Twilight’s crown began to tremble.
The six gemstones embedded in the Elements suddenly began glowing.
Their lights intertwined.
A brilliant golden beam shot into the air.
Everypony looked up in surprise.
Inside the golden light, something slowly began to take shape.
A crown.
Its center held a pale platinum gemstone carved in the shape of a book.

Dusk Glow stared at it.
Twilight stared.
Celestia’s expression changed.
Even Luna looked bewildered.
The new crown hovered silently in the air.
Dusk Glow slowly raised his head.
“Could that be…”
“Another Element of Harmony?”
The golden crown continued to shine.
And somehow, everypony could feel that whatever had just awakened was something entirely new.
