The Lu Family compound was asleep by the time the second watch bell rang.

Lu Chen sat on the edge of his bed and unwrapped the linen bandage from his left forearm.

The cut from Han Yuze’s shattered saber was shallow but angry, the edges swollen and crusted with dried blood.Full novel: Mocked As Weak, My Ancestors Are Four Sleeping Great Emperors — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The burn on his right wrist had blistered during the evening meal, and the pain pulsed in time with his heartbeat every time he flexed his fingers.

He applied a thin layer of Bai Ruyue’s Meridian Cleansing Salve to both wounds and felt the cool herbal energy seep into his skin.

The salve was not designed for combat injuries, but it accelerated cellular repair in ways that ordinary medicine could not.

By morning, the cut would be a scar.

By tomorrow night, the scar would be gone.

Lu Chen rewrapped the bandage and stood.

He had waited three hours after the compound fell silent, counting the patrol routes of the two mortal servants at the front gate and the irregular footsteps of Elder Lu Mu, who sometimes wandered the halls at night when his insomnia flared.

Tonight, the medicine room was dark.

The halls were empty.

The pendant against his chest hummed its steady, quiet rhythm.

Lu Chen slipped out of his room and crossed the courtyard toward the main hall.

The building loomed against the starless sky, its wooden frame warped with age, its roof tiles missing in patches that let the mist drift through the upper floors like ghostly breath.

The front doors were unlocked.

They were always unlocked.

The Lu Family had nothing worth stealing, and Lu Yuan had never bothered with security arrays that the clan could not afford to maintain.

Lu Chen pushed the doors open and stepped inside.

The main hall smelled of dust and old wood and the faint, lingering trace of incense from the monthly clan meetings.

Moonlight filtered through the gaps in the roof and painted pale silver rectangles on the floorboards.

Lu Chen knelt in the center of the hall and pressed his palm against the wood.

He closed his eyes and extended his qi downward.

Body Tempering Stage 6 perception pushed through the floorboards, through the packed earth beneath the foundation, through the clay and the bedrock.

Fifteen meters down, the void waited.

The System’s map fragment pulsed in his mind, overlaying the physical space with a faint grid of ancient architectural lines.

[Underground passage entrance located.]

[Access mechanism: Blood-activated handprint lock.]

[Location: 2.3 meters east of host position, beneath the third floorboard from the ancestral shrine.]

Lu Chen opened his eyes and crawled to the eastern wall, where the Lu Family’s small ancestral shrine sat in an alcove gathering dust.

The shrine held three wooden tablets inscribed with names he did not recognize — ancestors from a lineage that Lu Yuan had never explained and Lu Chen had stopped asking about years ago.

He counted three floorboards east from the shrine’s base.

The third board looked identical to every other board in the hall.

Same warped wood.

Same faded lacquer.

Same dust.

But when Lu Chen pressed his fingers against the surface, he felt a faint vibration that had nothing to do with the building’s settling foundation.

It was a resonance.

Deep, ancient, and patient.

He peeled back the bandage on his left forearm and squeezed the cut until fresh blood welled to the surface.

He pressed his bloody palm flat against the floorboard.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the wood beneath his hand grew warm.

A seam of pale golden light appeared around the edges of the floorboard, tracing a perfect square that had been invisible a heartbeat ago.

The light pulsed once, twice, three times.

The floorboard sank.

A section of the hall floor roughly one meter square descended into the earth with a low, grinding rumble that Lu Chen felt in his teeth more than he heard with his ears.

A staircase appeared.

The steps were carved from dark stone that predated the wooden hall above by centuries, possibly millennia, and the air rising from the depths was thick with spiritual qi so dense that Lu Chen’s meridians ached just breathing it.

[Pre-War spiritual density detected.]

[Ambient qi concentration: 10x surface level.]

[Warning: Energy signatures consistent with ancient high-realm cultivation arrays.]

[Restricted data: Array origin classified.]

Lu Chen stared down into the darkness.

The staircase descended beyond the reach of the moonlight, curving slightly to the left before vanishing into absolute black.

The qi rising from below was not the thin, diluted energy of the Eastern Continent’s frontier.

It was heavy and alive and ancient, saturated with a power that made the Cloudmist Jade Pendant vibrate against his chest in a rhythm that felt almost like recognition.

He took the first step.

The stone was cold beneath his bare feet.

He descended slowly, one hand trailing along the wall, his qi extended ahead of him like a blind man’s cane.

The staircase wound downward for what felt like an eternity but was probably less than two minutes.

The air grew warmer with each step.

The qi grew thicker.

And the walls began to change.

The rough-hewn stone gave way to smooth, polished surfaces covered in faded carvings that Lu Chen could barely make out in the darkness.

He channeled a thin thread of qi into his eyes and the carvings sharpened into focus.

They depicted figures standing above a battlefield of impossible scale.

Mountains shattered.

Rivers boiled.

The sky itself was torn open, and through the tear poured darkness that consumed everything it touched.

And above the carnage, four figures stood in a line, their forms radiating power so vast that the carving could not contain it.

The stone around their figures was cracked, as if the artist’s chisel had shattered trying to capture their likeness.

Lu Chen’s breath caught.

He did not know who the four figures were.

He did not know what war they had fought.

But the ache in his dantian intensified as he looked at them, a deep, bone-level resonance that felt like homesickness for a place he had never been.

The staircase ended.

Lu Chen stepped off the last stair and into a space so vast that his qi-enhanced vision could not find the far wall.

The ceiling arched overhead like the inside of a cathedral, supported by pillars of dark stone carved with the same faded figures he had seen on the stairs.

The air was warm and heavy and saturated with spiritual qi that pressed against his skin like water.

[Underground cavern entered.]

[Dimensions: Estimated 200 meters diameter, 40 meters ceiling height.]

[Structure: Pre-War cultivation sanctuary.]

[Energy density: 10x surface ambient and rising.]

[Status: Dormant.

No active threats detected.]

Lu Chen stood in the center of the ancient cavern and felt the weight of a million years of silence pressing down on his shoulders.

Something was waiting here.

Something that had been waiting for a very, very long time.

And it knew he was here.
