The sounds of a frantic scrubbing could be heard from Luke’s room.

He was under strict orders to clean up every last trace of his “accident,” the shame still clinging to him like a wet blanket.

Ethan, however, had emerged from his own room, freshly showered and dressed, a smug, triumphant smile plastered on his face.Full novel: Modern Family (Ethan Dunphy) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He descended the stairs, heading towards the kitchen for a well-deserved snack, only to stop dead at the bottom.

Leaning casually against the banister, almost as if it had always been there, was a shiny, brand-new bicycle.

Ethan stared at it, then his eyes flicked to Phil, who was looking suspiciously innocent, humming to himself as he sorted mail.

“You got him another one?” Ethan asked, a note of disbelief in his voice.

Phil, caught off guard, jumped slightly.

“Another one?

What do you mean another one?”

Ethan rolled his eyes, gesturing towards the garage door.

“Yeah, there’s one in the garage.”

Phil’s face slowly transformed from innocent confusion to dawning horror.

His eyes widened, his mouth formed a silent ‘O’.

“Oh no,” he whispered, a hand flying to his mouth.

“I stole a kid’s bike.”

Ethan crossed his arms, a smirk playing on his lips.

“You stole a kid’s bike?”

“On accident!” Phil quickly interjected, already trying to explain.

“I thought it was the other one.

Oh, your mother’s going to kill me!

You need to help me take back that bike before your mother finds the other one.” Phil’s voice had dropped to a desperate whisper.

Ethan, despite himself, found a certain morbid amusement in his dad’s predicament.

“Fine,” he conceded, already imagining the ensuing chaos if Claire found out.

It would at least be more interesting than listening to Luke scrub his floor for another hour.

They quickly made their way to the garage.

Phil, practically threw open the garage door, revealing a nearly identical red bike, leaning against a stack of boxes.

Ethan, still smirking, helped his dad load the second bike onto the back of the family SUV, the two red bikes looking like bewildered twins.

As Phil began to back the SUV out of the driveway, slowly and carefully, a figure suddenly appeared, blocking their exit.

It was Claire, arms crossed, a look of steely resolve on her face.

She held her purse, which she had indeed forgotten.

“Uh oh,” Phil mumbled, shrinking in his seat.

Ethan, sitting in the passenger seat, leaned back, a resigned sigh escaping his lips.

“Uh oh is right.

I shouldn’t have helped.”

He subtly started examining his fingernails, pretending to be deeply absorbed in their cleanliness, as if the impending confrontation had nothing to do with him.

Phil turned off the engine, and both he and Ethan slowly got out of the car.

Ethan stood a little off to the side, maintaining plausible deniability, though his carefully casual posture and the intensity with which he studied his cuticles betrayed his awareness.

Claire approached, her expression surprisingly calm.

“I mean, I don’t understand.

Why are you trying to sneak around and hide things from me?” she began, her tone accusatory.

Then, a slow smile spread across her face.

“I actually think it’s pretty funny.”

Phil blinked, confused.

“…You do?”

“I do, yes,” Claire confirmed, her smile widening.

“I mean, you steal a bike from some poor kid and then the bike gets stolen from you.

It’s hilarious.”

Phil, ever the opportunist, seized on her amusement.

“Classic me, right?”

“Yes!” Claire laughed, a genuine, hearty laugh.

“So, where were you when it got stolen?”

Phil stammered, trying to piece together a believable lie.

“Oh, I was getting some gas…”

“Uh huh,” Claire prompted, her eyes twinkling.

“Yeah,” Phil confirmed, trying to sound confident.

“You don’t stand near the car when you get gas?” Claire pointed out.

“Yep!” Phil replied, a little too quickly.

“But, uh, I went inside…

to get a soda because I was thirsty; if I had soda I wouldn’t be thirsty anymore, so I…

bought one and then I drank it all right there, which is why I don’t have the can.” He finished with a flourish, clearly proud of his quick thinking.

Claire just shook her head, still smiling.

“Well, honey, please, let’s try to remember that I’m your wife, not your mom.

So in the future, you don’t need to hide things from me, okay?”

Phil, relieved, nodded vigorously.

“Okay.”

“Okay.” Claire reached out, pulling Phil into a hug.

Just then, an older women came, Phil, seeing her, suddenly squeezed Claire tighter, a desperate attempt to look like a happily married man.

“Oooh.

Oh yeah, you get back here.”

Claire struggled in his grip.

“What are you doing?

I know, I love you too, but that hurts.”

Phil, dragging her towards the house, insisted, “Let’s get you inside.”

Desiree walked down with the bike, a beaming smile on her face.

“Hi!

Hello, hi there!”

“Oh, hi!” Phil said, his voice strained as he still clutched Claire.

“Hi again!” Desiree chirped, completely oblivious to the awkwardness.

“I, uh, found your bike.

Uh…” She gestured to the back of her car, where another bicycle, was clearly visible.

“It was in my garage.

One of my neighbors saw it and put it in my garage when you were in my bedroom, so…”

Phil froze.

His eyes met Claire’s, who was now staring at him, her smile slowly, terrifyingly, fading.

Phil managed a weak, “Classic me?”

Ethan, who had been witnessing the entire unfolding disaster from his “neutral” position, could no longer contain himself.

A snort escaped him, quickly followed by a full, booming laugh that echoed through the quiet suburban street.

He clutched his stomach, tears streaming down his face, as Phil’s carefully constructed lie collapsed around him.

Later, with the truth painfully revealed and Claire’s fury narrowly averted (mostly thanks to Ethan’s timely laughter deflecting the initial shock), Ethan found himself reluctantly accompanying Phil to return the now infamous bike to its rightful owner.

“I don’t know why you didn’t just dump the bike,” Ethan mumbled, staring out the window.

“Or donate it.

Or light it on fire.

Anything but this.”

Phil, looking sheepish but determined, shook his head.

“There’s a valuable lesson to be taught in all this, son.”

Ethan scoffed.

“Get insurance.”

Just as Phil was carefully placing the bike to a tree, a small boy, no older than Luke, came tearing around the corner of the house, his eyes wide with disbelief and then a triumphant yell.

“Hey!

That’s my bike!”

Phil froze, the bike still half-strapped.

He looked at the kid, then at Ethan, then back at the kid, who was now joined by a slightly older, equally indignant friend.

“Oh,” Phil whispered, his face paling.

“I don’t, uh…

Well!” He suddenly dropped the bike with a clatter.

“Ethan, run!”

Phil took off sprinting down the street, Ethan, after a moment’s bewildered pause, quickly followed suit, leaving the bike abandoned.

The kid and his friend, fueled by outrage and the prospect of a chase, immediately gave pursuit, yelling indignantly.

“I was giving it back!” Phil yelled over his shoulder, his voice thin with panic, as he and Ethan disappeared around the corner, two mismatched figures fleeing from a small, angry child and his bicycle.
