The walk home was quiet.

Oria stayed by Scenic’s side until they reached the edge of the village, chatting about anything except the party.

She knew better than to force the subject.Full novel: Moonbound | A Liara Jollie’s Story | FIRST DRAFT (FOR FEEDBACKS) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Sometimes the greatest comfort wasn’t advice-it was simply refusing to let someone face the silence alone.

When they reached the crossroads, Oria squeezed Scenic’s shoulder.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Scenic smiled.

“I’ll be fine.”

Oria hesitated, clearly unconvinced, before finally nodding and disappearing toward her family’s home.

Scenic watched her go until the blonde werewolf vanished into the darkness.

Only then did he turn away.

His feet carried him toward the forest almost on instinct.

It was the same path he had walked countless nights before whenever the world became too loud.

Moonlight filtered through the towering pines, painting silver patterns across the moss-covered ground.

The laughter from the celebration faded behind him until only the whisper of leaves and the distant call of an owl remained.

For the first time that evening…

He could breathe.

Scenic walked slowly, hands tucked into the sleeves of his cloak, trying to untangle everything that had happened.

The humiliation.

The whispers.

The kindness of strangers.

Calix.

…

A faint crunch of leaves echoed behind him.

Scenic stopped.

His heart skipped once before he slowly turned.

Someone stood beneath the moonlight.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Familiar.

Calix.

He was alone.

No guards.

No Beta escorts.

No Alpha standing behind him.

Just Calix.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was heavy.

As though every unspoken apology, every unanswered question, and every regret stood between them.

Calix took a cautious step forward.

Not the confident stride of the future Alpha.

Not the commanding presence that made warriors instinctively obey.

This was something entirely different.

Careful.

Uncertain.

Almost hesitant.

He looked less like a leader… Visit novelpin‌g.com for the full chapter.

…and more like a man afraid of frightening away someone already wounded.

Another step.

Then another.

Moonlight caught the sharp lines of his face.

His emerald eyes never left Scenic’s.

There was no arrogance in them tonight.

Only exhaustion.

Confusion.

And something Scenic couldn’t quite name.

The breeze stirred gently between them, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth.

Neither moved.

Neither looked away.

There were no pack laws here.

No Council.

No Alpha expectations.

Only two people standing beneath an endless sky.

Scenic broke the silence first.

“I know…”

His voice was quiet but steady.

“I know you were trying to help me.”

Calix’s expression shifted almost imperceptibly.

Scenic continued.

“I could have protected myself.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“Even if I’m not a werewolf…”

He paused.

“…but…”

Calix’s heartbeat quickened.

He braced himself.

For rejection.

For anger.

For the words he knew he deserved.

Instead-

“Thank you.”

The words were so gentle they almost disappeared into the wind.

Calix blinked.

Once.

Twice.

He wasn’t sure he’d heard correctly.

Thank you?

After everything?

After rejecting their bond.

After allowing the whispers.

After watching him walk away tonight.

…was thanking him.

Something inside Calix cracked.

Not his composure.

Something much deeper.

His wolf, silent for weeks except for its constant grief, lifted its head for the first time.

Not in pain.

Not in rage.

Hope.

Calix released a shaky breath.

Without allowing himself time to think-

He closed the remaining distance.

His arms wrapped around Scenic.

Firm.

Protective.

Careful.

Scenic froze for only a heartbeat before feeling the warmth surrounding him.

Calix held him as though he feared letting go would make this moment disappear forever.

No words were exchanged.

None were needed.

Scenic could hear the steady rhythm of Calix’s heartbeat beneath layers of leather and wool.

Strong.

Fast.

Real.

The familiar scent of pine forests and fresh leather surrounded him, carrying memories of years spent growing up in the same pack.

Above them, the branches swayed softly in the night breeze.

Somewhere in the distance, an owl called into the darkness.

Time seemed to slow.

Minutes slipped past unnoticed.

Calix made no attempt to release him.

This wasn’t duty.

Nor obligation.

It wasn’t an Alpha offering comfort to a member of his pack.

It was simply…

Calix.

Holding the one person he had convinced himself he could live without.

His chin rested gently atop Scenic’s head.

His eyes closed.

For the first time in weeks…

His wolf was quiet.

Not because the pain had disappeared.

But because, for one fleeting moment, the emptiness inside him wasn’t quite so unbearable.

Almost unconsciously, Calix lowered his head.

His lips brushed softly against the crown of Scenic’s hair.

A kiss so light it was almost carried away by the wind.

Neither of them spoke.

The forest itself seemed unwilling to disturb the fragile peace they had found beneath the moonlight.
