The familiar wooden door creaked softly as I stepped inside.

Warmth greeted me immediately.

The scent of burning cedar drifted from the fireplace, mingling with the comforting aroma of the evening meal.Full novel: Moonbound | A Liara Jollie’s Story | FIRST DRAFT (FOR FEEDBACKS) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It was home.

For a moment, I simply stood there, letting the quiet settle around me.

Then I unclasped the crimson velvet cape from my shoulders.

The fabric slid into my hands.

“He rejected me.”

The words left my mouth almost absentmindedly.

As though I were commenting on the weather.

The house fell silent.

Not ordinary silence.

The kind that steals the air from a room.

Lira had been hanging her cloak beside the door.

She froze.

Across the room, Kael had just finished removing his boots near the hearth.

His hands stopped moving, one boot still half in his grasp.

Neither of them spoke.

I folded my cape carefully over my arm, just as I had done every evening since I was twelve-the age they had welcomed a frightened human orphan into their home without hesitation.

“He rejected me.”

Saying it aloud didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would.

Perhaps because the pain had already settled somewhere too deep for words to reach.

Lira slowly turned toward me.

The color drained from her face before anger replaced it in an instant.

A muscle jumped along her jaw.

Kael’s expression remained unreadable as he studied me in silence.

Not my clothes.

Not the cape.

My face.

“It’s okay,” I said with a small smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes.

“I wasn’t expecting to find my mate anyway.”

I shrugged lightly.

“I’m not a werewolf.”

The silence that followed was almost unbearable.

Lira crossed the room in two quick strides.

Before I realized what she intended, she had taken both of my hands into hers.

Her grip trembled.

Then she pulled me into her embrace.

It was fierce.

Protective.

Almost crushing.

She held me as though she could erase every unfair thing that had happened to me simply by refusing to let go.

Orphaned.

Raised by wolves who had chosen me when they had no obligation to.

Accepted by many…

Yet never fully accepted by all.

I rested my forehead against her shoulder.

“But I still have you both.”

This time my smile was genuine, however small.

“That’s enough for me.”

I drew a slow breath.

“The Queen asked me to participate in the ceremony.”

“I honored her request.”

“What if I hadn’t been chosen?” I continued quietly.

“Some of the Alphas…

even a few Betas…

never truly considered me one of their own.”

I lowered my eyes.

“So…

I suppose it makes sense.”

Lira stiffened.

“The Queen requested it?”

She pulled back just enough to look directly into my face.

Her hands cupped my cheeks with the same tenderness she had shown whenever I came home bruised as a child.

She wasn’t searching for injuries.

She was searching for the hurt I was trying so desperately to hide.

Kael finally spoke.

His deep voice carried through the room like distant thunder.

“You think being chosen matters…”

“…if they refuse to honor the bond fate itself created?”

He stepped closer before lowering himself onto one knee in front of me.

Despite his imposing frame and years spent defending the Clearwater borders, there was nothing intimidating about him now.

He rested his weathered hands gently on my shoulders.

“Tell me honestly.”

His voice softened.

“Do you truly believe your mother and I wouldn’t have considered ourselves blessed…”

“…if Calix had accepted you as his mate?”

My heart tightened.

“I didn’t mean it that way, Father.”

For a long moment, Kael simply looked at me.

Then he sighed.

“I know.”

His thumbs brushed lightly across my shoulders, just as they had countless times throughout my childhood.

“I know you didn’t.”

Lira leaned forward until our foreheads touched.

“You are our daughter.”

Her voice was steady.

“Blood has never decided that.”

She guided me to the couch before wrapping the old wool blanket around both of us.

Outside, the mountain wind rattled softly against the windows.

Inside, only the fire crackled.

No one spoke of Calix again.

No one spoke of Alphas.

No one asked me to explain my feelings.

They simply stayed beside me.

After a quiet moment, Kael joined us.

His strong arm settled around Lira’s shoulders before gently drawing me closer with the other.

The three of us sat together beneath the blanket in silence.

For the first time that night…

I allowed myself to believe that, whatever I had lost, I had never truly been alone.
