Calix remained standing as the door to his chambers opened once again.

He expected another stern lecture.

Another reminder of the responsibilities that now rested upon his shoulders.Full novel: Moonbound | A Liara Jollie’s Story | FIRST DRAFT (FOR FEEDBACKS) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Instead…

King Veyl entered carrying a wooden tray.

Freshly roasted meat.

Warm bread.

A pair of silver goblets.

And a bottle of aged ale reserved only for the royal family.

For the first time that evening…

His father smiled.

“My son,” Veyl said warmly, setting the tray upon the table.

“A victory like today’s deserves more than a formal ceremony.”

He poured the amber ale into both cups before taking a seat across from him.

“Tonight, let us celebrate as father and son.”

Calix blinked.

It had been years since they had shared a meal alone.

Slowly, he sat opposite his father.

Veyl raised his cup.

“To Alpha Calix.”

“And to the future King.”

Their goblets touched with a quiet clink.

Calix drank only a small sip.

His father, meanwhile, emptied nearly half his cup before setting it aside with an approving smile.

“You fought exceptionally well.”

Calix inclined his head.

“I did what you trained me to do.”

“You did more than that.”

Veyl carved a slice of roasted meat before continuing.

“You remained disciplined.”

“You showed restraint.”

“You spared your opponent when victory was already yours.”

A faint smile crossed the King’s face.

“That is what separates a ruler from a warrior.”

For most sons…

Those words would have been everything.

Years of praise condensed into a few simple sentences.

Yet Calix could not shake the strange feeling tightening inside his chest.

His father was…

Too relaxed.

Too pleased.

There were no questions.

No discussion about politics.

No mention of the celebration outside.

Most notably…

No mention of her.

Not once.

It was unusual enough that Calix found himself studying Veyl more carefully than the meal before him.

The King’s expression remained calm.

Satisfied.

Almost…

relieved. Get faster updates on g.com.

“You’ve earned this night,” Veyl continued.

“Tomorrow your responsibilities begin.”

“But tonight…”

He lifted his goblet again.

“Enjoy your victory.”

Calix returned the gesture, though his instincts refused to settle.

His wolf stirred uneasily beneath his skin.

Something was wrong.

He simply could not see what.

Far beyond the celebration…

A small group of guards walked through the silent forest.

At their center walked a single human girl.

No chains bound her wrists.

No ropes forced her forward.

She walked willingly.

Not because she accepted her punishment…

But because she had accepted the price.

Each step carried her farther away from everyone she loved.

The distant celebration echoed through the trees behind her.

Howls.

Music.

Laughter.

Calix was being celebrated as Alpha.

He had no idea his world was already being torn apart.

The guards remained silent.

None of them mocked her.

None looked pleased.

They simply fulfilled the King’s command.

Duty came before sympathy.

The ancient trees gradually parted.

There, between two enormous trunks whose roots twisted like sleeping serpents, stood the gateway.

A curtain of shimmering silver light floated in the darkness, rippling like water beneath the moon.

It was one of the oldest portals between the worlds of wolves and humans.

Rarely used.

Almost never spoken about.

She stopped before it.

The portal reflected in her tear-filled eyes.

Her chest ached.

Not because she feared the human world.

But because of what she was leaving behind.

Oria.

Lira.

Kael.

…Calix.

None of them deserved the pain that would follow.

If disappearing meant protecting them…

Then she would disappear.

One of the Beta guards quietly stepped beside her.

For the first time since leaving the lodge, he spoke.

“…I’m sorry.”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Before she could answer, he gently rested a hand against her shoulder.

Not forcing.

Simply telling her…

It was time.

She closed her eyes.

She drew one final breath.

The scent of pine.

The crisp mountain air.

The distant voices of the pack she had called home.

She silently committed them to memory.

Then…

She stepped forward.

The world dissolved.

Light swallowed everything.

Sound vanished.

Her body felt weightless, as though she were falling through an endless sky.

For one impossible moment…

There was nothing.

Then…

Solid ground.

She stumbled forward, barely catching herself before falling onto rough pavement.

The air felt different.

Warmer.

Heavier.

The scent of pine had been replaced by asphalt and rain-soaked concrete.

Streetlights glowed overhead.

Cars rolled past nearby.

People walked along the sidewalk carrying shopping bags and talking into glowing phones.

No one looked at her twice.

To them…

She was simply another young woman standing alone in a city street.

She slowly turned around.

The shimmering portal was gone.

In its place stood nothing more than an old brick wall at the end of a narrow alley.

She reached toward it with trembling fingers.

Cold stone.

Solid.

Ordinary.

No magic.

No doorway.

No path home.

Only silence.

A single tear escaped down her cheek.

There would be no returning.

No secret meetings beneath the stars.

No hidden mountain spring.

No quiet walks through the forest with Calix.

Only memories.

Far away, in another world…

Calix lifted his cup once more as his father spoke proudly of the future awaiting him.

He could not know that, at that very same moment…

The person he intended to see again tomorrow…

Had already vanished from his world forever.
