The doors closed behind her with a muted thud.

For several long moments, Calix continued looking toward them.

The chamber had fallen strangely quiet.Full novel: Moonbound | A Liara Jollie’s Story | FIRST DRAFT (FOR FEEDBACKS) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Her scent still lingered in the air.

Winter.

Pine.

The faint warmth of cedar from the fire she had been sitting beside.

His wolf stirred restlessly.

Go after her.

Calix silenced the instinct before it could become thought.

A quiet clearing of a throat broke the silence.

His father’s.

Instantly, years of discipline reclaimed him.

His shoulders straightened.

His breathing steadied.

Whatever had flickered across his expression disappeared beneath the calm mask expected of Clearwater’s future Alpha.

Veyl stepped forward first.

He inclined his head respectfully toward the Queen.

“Your Majesty.”

His voice was measured.

“You summoned us.”

“We came without delay.”

Queen Elara acknowledged the greeting with a graceful inclination of her head.

She descended the shallow steps of the dais, each movement unhurried.

There was no need to announce authority.

She carried it effortlessly.

Calix remained one pace behind his father, exactly where protocol required.

The Queen’s attention settled upon him.

Not briefly.

Not casually.

Looked.

Her blue eyes examined him with the same quiet patience she had shown moments earlier while listening to the young woman who had just left.

Calix met her gaze.

He neither lowered his eyes nor challenged hers.

The silence stretched.

He could feel his heartbeat once against his throat.

Only once.

Beside him, Veyl shifted almost imperceptibly.

Not enough to interrupt.

Just enough to place himself fractionally nearer his son.

A father’s instinct hidden beneath an Alpha’s composure.

Finally, Queen Elara spoke.

“Calix.”

Nothing more.

Only his name.

Yet hearing it spoken so evenly unsettled him far more than anger would have.

He bowed his head respectfully.

“Your Majesty.”

Again, silence.

Then the Queen turned her attention to Alpha Veyl.

“There is something we must discuss.”

Her tone remained perfectly controlled.

“It concerns yesterday.”

Neither Alpha nor heir appeared surprised.

Veyl folded his hands behind his back.

“I assumed as much.”

His expression revealed nothing.

The Queen regarded him steadily.

“A fated bond was rejected.”

“It was.”

“They may.”

The exchange remained calm.

Measured.

Neither ruler spoke carelessly.

Neither needed to.

After a thoughtful pause, Veyl continued.

“What occurred yesterday concerns the Clearwater Pack.”

His voice remained respectful, yet unmistakably firm.

“As Alpha, responsibility for my people rests with me.”

He held the Queen’s gaze without hesitation.

“Fate does not always walk the same path as duty.”

The words settled over the chamber.

Calix remained motionless.

He had heard those sentiments before.

Duty above desire.

The pack before the individual.

They were lessons his father had repeated throughout his childhood.

Queen Elara studied both father and son for several moments before answering.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“It does not.”

She took another step forward.

“But history has also taught us something else.”

Her gaze settled on Calix once more.

“When leaders convince themselves that duty and compassion cannot exist together…”

“They often lose both.”

The chamber fell silent again.

No one spoke.

Outside, somewhere beyond the stained-glass windows, the distant sounds of the palace continued as though nothing had changed.

Inside…

The future of a single rejected bond had become a conversation about the future of an entire kingdom.
