The giant silver wolf landed between Nyra and the abyss with enough force to shake the entire underground chamber.

BOOM.

Cracks spread across the stone floor beneath its massive paws while glowing silver mist curled around its towering body.Full novel: Moonfang Academy — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Every wolf in the chamber lowered their heads immediately.

Even the darkness recoiled slightly.

The Vein King’s colossal crimson eye narrowed.

“…You still exist.”

The giant wolf stood silent.

Its fur shimmered like moonlight over fresh snow while ancient runes burned softly across its body.

Nyra couldn’t stop staring.

Something inside her recognized it instantly.

Not with memory.

With feeling.

Safety.

Home.

The voice echoed inside her mind again.

Gentle.

Ancient.

“Little flame…”

Nyra’s breath trembled.

“You know me…”

The wolf slowly turned its enormous head toward her.

Its glowing silver eyes softened.

“I watched over you in every lifetime.”

Tears burned Nyra’s eyes unexpectedly.

Kael slowly stood nearby, blood running down one side of his face after being thrown into the pillar.

And for the first time since meeting him—

Nyra saw relief.

Real relief.

“…Fenrir,” he whispered quietly.

The giant wolf looked toward him briefly.

Then back at Nyra.

“You remember my name.”

Fragments flashed through Nyra’s mind instantly—

A younger Seraphine sleeping peacefully against giant silver fur beneath moonlit trees.

A deep voice laughing softly.

“You’re too small to fight darkness alone, little flame.”

Nyra’s chest ached painfully.

The Vein King growled beneath the abyss now.

The sound shook the chamber walls.

“She belongs to me.”

Fenrir’s glowing eyes sharpened instantly.

The silver runes across his body ignited brighter.

“No.”

The single word thundered through the chamber like a storm.

Silver light exploded outward violently.

The shadows surrounding the abyss hissed and recoiled instantly.

Even the Vein King’s tendrils pulled backward.

The wolves around the chamber howled together.

Hope filled the room for the first time all night.

But Fenrir’s voice inside Nyra’s mind remained sorrowful.

“The seal is almost gone.”

Nyra swallowed shakily.

“Can you stop him?”

Silence followed.

And that silence answered enough.

Fenrir slowly lowered his massive head closer to her.

“Not alone.”

The Vein King laughed below them.

Black tendrils burst upward violently from the abyss again.

Fenrir moved instantly.

A massive silver paw slammed downward.

The entire chamber exploded with moonlight.

The shadows disintegrated screaming.

Nyra stared in awe.

Fenrir was powerful.

Ancient.

But she noticed something terrifying—

His glowing body flickered slightly afterward.

Weakening.

Kael noticed too.

His expression darkened immediately.

“He’s dying.”

Fenrir looked toward him calmly.

“I died long ago.”

Nyra’s heart dropped.

“What?”

The great wolf’s eyes softened again.

“I remained only because you kept returning.”

The realization shattered through her painfully.

Fenrir had been waiting for centuries.

Watching her die again.

And again.

And again.

Never able to stop it fully.

The Vein King’s heartbeat thundered harder beneath the abyss.

THUMP.

THUMP.

THUMP.

Massive cracks spread across the seal chamber floor now.

The creature below was almost free.

The Headmistress still hung trapped within the black tendrils, barely conscious.

Blood covered the glowing seal beneath her.

Liora knelt beside fallen students nearby trying desperately to wake them.

Everything was falling apart.

Nyra looked around the collapsing chamber.

Then finally whispered the question haunting her.

“…Why me?”

Silence filled the room.

Then Fenrir answered softly:

“Because you were born from both light and darkness.”

Nyra’s golden eyes widened slightly.

Fenrir continued.

“The Hollow Flame was never meant to destroy the Vein King.”

The ancient wolf lowered his head sadly.

“It was created to balance him.”

The Vein King laughed softly below.

“At last… the truth.”

Nyra frowned shakily.

“Balance?”

Fenrir nodded slowly.

“Long ago, the world feared darkness so deeply that humans tried erasing it completely.”

Ancient images suddenly appeared in the silver mist surrounding Fenrir.

Kings.

Priests.

Wars.

Entire cities burning beneath holy fire.

“But darkness cannot be destroyed.”

The visions shifted.

“The world needs balance.”

Light.

Darkness.

Life.

Death.

Nyra watched the visions silently.

And slowly understood.

The Vein King was not simply evil.

He was ancient hunger.

Loneliness.

Fear.

All the darkness humanity buried away.

Fenrir’s voice became quieter.

“And you were born to carry both without being consumed.”

Nyra’s chest tightened painfully.

“But I keep failing.”

Kael stepped toward her slowly.

“No.”

His silver eyes trembled slightly.

“You kept choosing humanity every lifetime.”

Nyra looked at him.

“And you kept killing me.”

The words still hurt.

Kael visibly flinched.

But this time—

Nyra also saw his suffering.

Every lifetime had destroyed him too.

The Vein King suddenly roared violently.

The chamber shook hard enough to collapse entire pillars.

A colossal skeletal hand burst fully from the abyss now.

Then another.

Its gigantic body was finally emerging.

Fenrir immediately moved protectively before Nyra.

But the ancient wolf’s body flickered weaker again.

The Vein King noticed.

And smiled.

“You cannot protect her forever.”

Fenrir’s voice echoed firmly inside Nyra’s soul.

“No.”

The wolf slowly looked back at her one final time.

And suddenly—

Nyra realized what he intended.

“No.”

Fenrir’s silver eyes softened lovingly.

“Little flame…”

The runes across his body began glowing brighter.

Too bright.

Kael’s expression changed instantly.

“Fenrir, don’t—”

“The moon guardians were created for one purpose.”

Silver light flooded the chamber.

The wolves around them began howling mournfully.

Nyra’s heartbeat quickened.

“Stop!”

But Fenrir only smiled gently inside her mind.

“To protect the child of balance.”

The Vein King’s crimson eye widened slightly.

Realizing too late.

Fenrir lifted his head toward the collapsing ceiling.

And the entire underground chamber exploded with moonlight.
