“Give Noah one steady dinner he remembers,” Caleb said.

“Release healing and comfort scent. Stay the night. Tomorrow morning, we talk documents.”

He typed the three lines into a memo as he spoke.Full novel: My Alpha Sacrificed My Hand for Her, So I Left Him — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Dinner.

Scent.

Overnight stay.

Each one a checkbox waiting for a pass mark.

“Divorce is not a wife performance review,” I said.

Behind him, the kitchen clock still ran six minutes fast.

I used to set my whole morning by it.

Tonight I checked the real time on the open call.

Noah stood at the top of the stairs with the first-place backpack hugged to his chest.

He had heard every term.

“You can divorce,” he said.

“I’ll stay with Dad. But you stay tonight. And Auntie Ivy can’t leave either.”

Noah dragged the backpack down one step.

I nearly told him to lift it before the strap caught.

I pressed my lips together.

Caleb was standing right there.

Caleb turned back to me.

“In such a hurry,” he said.

“Is it so you can marry Thorne? Pack dignity does not allow you to become someone else’s while you are still married.”

I rotated the tablet so the three blank boxes faced him again.

“Don’t use Noah as a shield,” I said.

“You just don’t want to divorce. Do you?”

He did not answer.

He walked to the kitchen wall and switched every light on, one after another, until the island and the table burned white.

Then he pushed the tablet with the three empty boxes across the surface toward me.

I picked up the pen.

I did not check a single box.

I crossed the three empty squares out one after another and wrote the same word after each line.

NO.

NO.

NO.

Then I stepped to the far side of the kitchen island so the overhead lights hit my right hand clean.

The pans stayed untouched.

I held my ground away from Noah.

“I’m not staying,” I said.

“You’re punishing Noah too?”

“Order his dinner.”

Noah swept the wolf plush off his backpack.

It hit the floor between us.

He waited for me to pick it up.

The kitchen phone rang.

A servant checked the display, then looked at Caleb.

“Independent counsel, sir. She says she has the recording from the street.”

“Tell her we’re talking.”

I switched the cordless handset to speaker and set it on the island.

“I’m leaving tonight. Stay on the line.”

Caleb came around the island and reached for my right wrist.

Gold flashed in his eyes.

The old finger marks had not entirely faded.

I slapped his hand away with my left palm.

The crack of contact filled the kitchen.

I lifted my phone, photographed the silver marks, then the kitchen camera time stamp on the wall screen, and dropped both images into the lawyer evidence folder before he could speak.

“Don’t use that hand as a shield,” Caleb said.

“Touch my hand again,” I said, “and tomorrow the first picture in court is this one.”

His fingers froze in the air between us.

Noah stared at the plush still on the floor.

“You used to pick it up for me,” Noah said.

“You can pick it up, Noah.”

He looked at his father.

Caleb was watching the phone.

Elena’s POV

I carried the handset to the long dining table and set it beside my bag.

I took three things from my bag and set them where the plates would have gone.

The board freeze and accident drive.

The Jubilee headlines still carrying Blackwood’s name.

The Port Haven protection order, ready to move me within seventy-two hours.

“There is no dinner on this table,” I said.

“Only three costs you cannot push back under a rug.”

Caleb’s gaze snagged on the freeze resolution.

“You signed an NDA.”

“An NDA does not grant immunity for safety tampering. Your own freeze resolution already proved this is worth investigating.”

I gave him the choice without raising my voice.

“Tonight you sign the settlement, the court package, and the property transfer. Or my lawyer seeks an emergency release order and sends the full accident mirror through the safety exception. I leave under Port Haven protection either way.”

Caleb pushed the property schedule aside.

“Valuation isn’t finished.”

My lawyer answered through the receiver.

“Your office approved this schedule yesterday. I have the copy.”

He looked at me.

“Tonight,” I said.

Silence stretched until the kitchen lights hummed.

Then he pulled out his phone and dialed a neutral family lawyer whose number was not in the Blackwood preferred list.

He still had one condition.

“Joint escrow,” Caleb said.

“A firm both sides approve. Otherwise there is no signature.”

No smile.

No relief.

Hearing him finally say sign only made me watch the last chain harder.

The more he clung to joint custody of the papers, the more every seal and tracking number had to land tonight.

“Fine,” I said.

“But the fixed release window and every tracking number generate tonight.”

On the line, the lawyer named the earliest witness slot that could still open before midnight.

I photographed the tablet with the three crossed boxes and the word NO written after each line, dropped the image into the evidence pack, and picked up the encrypted drive.

“We leave now.”

Caleb’s POV

Elena had made me keep the appointment.

Her lawyer followed in one car; Thorne followed in another.

In the back seat of the car heading to the neutral family lawyer’s office, I opened the joint escrow roster on my phone and stopped on one partner’s name.

Someone I could still reach.

Someone who still answered Blackwood calls after hours.

Caleb is not letting her go that easily.

What is he planning with the escrow partner?

Will Elena fall into his trap, or will she realize it in time?
