I started to answer, then noticed the tracker.

I opened the backup tracker Felix had set for me and refreshed.

The last hourly status sat frozen at 3:12 a.m.

No new ping.

No seal change.

No partner note.

Yesterday the line had ticked every hour like a second heartbeat.

Today it was dead.

I dialed Caleb.

Voicemail.

I dialed the joint escrow partner.

Voicemail.

I dialed the duty line that was supposed to answer every hour.

Nothing.

Three dead lines at once was not bad luck.

It was a gap.

I hit redial a fourth time.

The medical wing number cut across the screen first.

“Mrs. Blackwood,” the nurse said.

“Matriarch is in multi-system failure. She is barely taking water. She asked for you.”

The papers were due at court in two days.

The only elder who had ever said I could leave might die before I got there.

If I stayed for papers and she died, I would never hear that voice again.

I screenshotted the dead tracker and sent it to my lawyer.

Keep watching.

Object if anything moves.

I am not withdrawing.

I grabbed the medical bag with my left hand and ran for the medical wing.

The corridor smelled like ozone and disinfectant.

Monitors already screamed before I crossed the threshold.

Matriarch’s fingers moved across the sheet, searching.

I took them with my left hand.

My right could not hold steady pressure.

Silver lines under the skin still ran from the scaffold course, and the nerves refused to lock when I needed them most.

The chart board nearly slipped when I tried to pin it with the wrong hand.

Her eyes found me.

“These six years…” Her voice broke between breaths.

“I did not protect you.” Enjoying the story? Read on at g.com.

Her hand felt smaller than it had at the Jubilee.

I remembered her dialing the independent lawyer before I could lose my nerve.

There were things I still wanted to tell her, days I wanted her to see.

“Then stay alive long enough to watch me leave,” I said.

Her grip tightened once.

Then the oxygen number crashed and the heart line followed it down.

I flipped the phone face-down on the crash cart so the glowing T-2 could not distract anyone, took the chart with my left hand, and cut through the noise.

Under the blanket, Matriarch’s fingers jerked.

Black claws pushed halfway through her nails, then slid back bloody.

Each failed shift dragged the heart line lower.

“Stop the stim protocol,” I said.

“It is forcing her wolf to burn organs that cannot keep up. Support only. Now.”

A junior doctor started to argue about standard Pack response.

“She is not a standard case,” I said.

“You will kill what is left if you keep forcing the shift response.”

They switched.

Fluids.

Oxygen.

No more chemical spike.

The lines stopped diving, but they did not climb.

We had already lost the clean window for ordinary rescue.

I left for seventeen minutes to check contraindications with the scaffold-side consultant.

Seventeen minutes only.

I timed them on my watch.

When I came back, the room no longer belonged to emergency medicine.

Ivy stood at the central line with a syringe marked Y-2 / investigational.

The plunger was already halfway down.

“Stop,” I said.

She finished the push anyway.

The liquid disappeared into Matriarch’s line like it had always belonged there.

The cabinet log explained how.

Support alone gave Matriarch less than an hour.

Y-2 was the only rescue candidate on site, and Caleb had signed a one-patient emergency exception.

Ivy’s old freeze still stood.

His signature had opened one door through it.

I photographed the batch number, the time stamp, and the full exemption page before anyone could clear the screen.

“You used an unfinished batch on your own grandmother,” I said.

Caleb stood on the other side of the bed.

The scent of winter pine had gone entirely hollow, masking a terrified wolf pretending to be a god.

He did not look at the chart.

He looked at me.

“Support was failing,” Caleb said.

“She had less than an hour. You trusted your new team to find another answer while she died.”

The room went quiet around that sentence.

He had signed the shortcut himself, then turned the seventeen minutes I had spent checking contraindications into betrayal.

Ivy kept her eyes on the monitors like a product launch, not a bedside.

I let the accusation pass.

I finished sealing the residual, wrote the custody log, and stepped back to the screens.

The numbers rose like a performance.

Color returned to Matriarch’s face.

Her wolf scent surged back in one clean wave as oxygen, heart output, and wolf metabolism climbed together.

Her eyelids fluttered.

She swallowed water.

A sound of relief went through the staff.

Someone laughed under their breath.

Ivy lifted her phone and told a PR aide to capture the monitor screen before the curve flattened.

“The numbers speak for themselves,” Ivy said.

“They’re speaking too soon,” I said.

My fingertips went cold while everyone else smiled.

The kidney and liver secondaries recovered in lockstep, too neat, too matched.

Real recovery never lined up like that.

It looked like a door forced open, not a body healing.

Caleb checked the secondary-marker feed on Ivy’s wrist terminal.

Matriarch’s data flashed green.

Only then did he look at the bed.

I checked the seal on the residual bag and added one line below the batch number.

Recheck at hour six.

Around me the monitors glowed like a victory.

I held the cold bag and watched the too-perfect curves keep climbing.

A ‘too-perfect’ recovery…

Elena knows a disaster is coming.

What happens at HOUR SIX?

Will Caleb’s arrogance finally destroy the Matriarch?
